**[WAVE 3: COMMENCING]**
**[RIFTS: 5 OPEN]**
**[HOLLOWED: EVOLVEDâABILITY-BEARING VARIANTS CONFIRMED]**
**[CORRUPTION FIELD: MANIFESTING AT ASHENVALE DAM]**
**[COALITION: ALL POSITIONSâENGAGED]**
Wave 3 hit like a hammer wrapped in darkness.
Five rifts. Not fourâthe system had escalated, and the fifth rift tore open in downtown Ashenvale, directly between the cathedral and the precinct. The emergence zone spewed Hollowed into the gap between the coalition's two strongest positions, forcing both strongholds to split their attention between their own defense and the new threat in the middle.
But the dam was where it mattered.
Kael and Lyra arrived at the observation deck twenty minutes before the wave countdown hit zero. Dex's combat team was already in positionâTomoko, Marcus, Jin, and eight of the coalition's strongest awakened, armed and arranged in defensive positions that covered every approach.
"The membrane is thinning here faster than anywhere else in the city," Lyra reported, her amber eyes scanning the dimensional fabric with S-rank precision. "The Wave 2 damage created a permanent weak point. The Hollow is pushing against itâI can see the pressure. It's enormous."
"Can you hold the structure while I work on the membrane?"
"I can hold the concrete. The physics. The dam itself." She looked at him. "The dimensional stuffâthat's beyond my ability. Even at S-rank, I can see the membrane but I can't touch it."
"I can now."
Kael extended his evolved perception into the dimensional fabric. At forty-three percent integration, the membrane wasn't just visibleâit was *tangible*. He could feel its texture, its tension, its areas of strength and weakness. Like running his hands across a wall and feeling where the plaster was cracked.
The weak point at the dam was worse than the beacon readings had suggested. The membrane here wasn't just thinâit was *translucent*. He could see through it to the other side, where the Hollow's corruption pressed against the barrier with patient, relentless pressure.
And at the center of the weak point, the corruption field was already formingâa sphere of dark energy seeping through the membrane like ink through wet paper.
**[WAVE 3 TIMER: 00:00:00]**
**[RIFTS: OPENING]**
**[THE HOLLOW: EXTENDING]**
The dam rift opened with a sound like reality screaming.
Unlike Wave 2's single rift in the drainage gallery, this one tore open across the dam's entire downstream faceâa gash in the world fifty meters wide, bleeding crimson and black, vomiting Hollowed into the reservoir valley below.
And the creatures that emerged were nothing like Wave 1 or Wave 2.
The first through the rift was a quadruped the size of a truck, armored in plates of corrupted bone, with a forward-mounted horn that glowed with concentrated essence. It hit the ground running, heading for the observation deck with the single-minded purpose of a guided missile.
Tomoko met it.
Her Berserker Surge activated at full intensityâthe red-gold aura wrapping her body in combat enhancement that tripled her speed and quintupled her striking power. She intercepted the creature at the deck's edge, driving her reinforced blade into the gap between its head plates with a precision that came from three weeks of fighting things that shouldn't exist.
The creature staggered. Didn't fall. Its horn swung toward herâ
And Marcus hit it from the left flank, his awakened abilityâKinetic Amplificationâturning his strike into a force multiplier that cracked the creature's armor and sent it tumbling off the dam's edge.
"That was a scout!" Dex shouted, reading the tactical situation with twenty years of military experience. "The main force is coming through now. Everyone to defensive positions!"
The main force was a nightmare.
Dozens of Hollowed, evolved beyond anything the coalition had faced. Bipedal stalkers with elongated arms that ended in blade-like extensions. Flying corruption-variantsâbat-winged horrors that swooped down from above, targeting the defensive team from the air. And scattered among them, the ability-bearing variants that Kael had predicted: Hollowed that could project corruption beams, generate localized force fields, or phase partially through solid matter.
"HOLD THE DECK!" Dex's voice cut through the chaos. "PROTECT THE ARCHITECT AND THE ENGINEER!"
The combat team fought. They fought with the desperate, coordinated ferocity of people who knew that the two people behind them were the only things standing between the city and catastrophe. Tomoko carved through Hollowed with berserker efficiency. Marcus amplified every strike into a demolition event. Jin's precision ranged attacks picked off the flyers. The eight other awakened held the flanks with abilities ranging from kinetic barriers to essence-disruption pulses.
And in the eye of the storm, Kael and Lyra worked.
Lyra's hands pressed against the dam's surfaceâher S-rank Structural Sense flowing into the concrete, reinforcing every stress point, hardening every weak section, holding the physical structure together against the dimensional assault. The dam groaned under the strainâreality and physics warping simultaneouslyâbut it held.
Kael reached into the membrane.
**[MEMBRANE INTERACTION: ACTIVE]**
**[CORRUPTION FIELD: MANIFESTINGâ40% DEPLOYED]**
**[DIMENSIONAL REPAIR: INITIATING]**
Touching the membrane was like touching a live wireâenergy flowing in both directions, the system's power meeting the Hollow's corruption at the boundary between realities. Kael could feel both forces: the system's intentâevolution, merger, transcendenceâand the Hollow's hungerâconsumption, destruction, assimilation.
And he could *manipulate*.
His hands moved through the air, tracing patterns that corresponded to the membrane's structure. Each gesture reinforced a section of the dimensional fabricânot with physical material but with the Architect Protocol's energy, weaving system-compatible repairs into the corrupted areas.
The corruption field resisted. Where Kael repaired, the Hollow pushed harder, trying to overwhelm the patches before they could set. It was a raceârepair versus corruptionâand the outcome depended on which force could work faster.
"The corruption field is at sixty percent deployment!" Lyra's voice, strained with the dual effort of structural reinforcement and dimensional observation. "The Hollowed on the field perimeter are getting strongerâtheir corruption signatures are amplifying. If it reaches full deploymentâ"
"It won't." Kael pushed harder. His hands burnedânot with physical heat but with the friction of two dimensional forces grinding against each other through his mortal body. "I can see the field's structure. It's anchored to the membrane weak pointâlike a root system, drawing the Hollow's influence through the thin spot. If I can sever the anchorâ"
"The field collapses."
"And the Hollow loses its foothold."
He reached deeper. Past the membrane's surface, into the dimensional fabric itselfâthe space between realities where matter and energy operated by different rules. Here, the corruption was visible as a physical structure: dark tendrils, woven through the membrane like black roots through soil, feeding the corruption field from the Hollow's domain.
The tendrils were thick. Strong. Designed to resist exactly this kind of interference.
But the Architect Protocol had been designed to do exactly this kind of work.
Kael gathered the system energy flowing through his evolved channels and formed it into a bladeânot physical but dimensional. A cutting edge of pure system-intent, calibrated to sever corrupted connections without damaging the underlying membrane.
He struck.
The first tendril severed with a sound that existed in frequencies beyond human hearingâa dimensional scream that made the rift pulse and the Hollowed nearby stagger. The corruption field flickeredâdropping from sixty percent to fifty.
He struck again. A second tendril. Forty percent.
Again. Thirty.
"It's working!" Lyra's eyes blazed amber. "The field is retreating! The Hollowed are weakening!"
On the observation deck, the combat team felt the change. The Hollowed's assaultâpreviously fierce and coordinatedâbecame confused, disorganized. Creatures that had been pressing the defensive line stumbled, their corruption-enhanced abilities flickering as the field that powered them destabilized.
"PUSH THEM BACK!" Dex ordered. "NOW, WHILE THEY'RE WEAK!"
The counterattack was devastating. Three weeks of training, three waves of experience, and the fury of people defending their worldâit all converged in a sustained assault that drove the Hollowed back toward the rift. Creatures that had seemed unstoppable minutes ago fell before the coalition's awakened, their weakened corruption no match for human determination at full power.
Kael severed the final tendrils.
**[CORRUPTION FIELD: COLLAPSED]**
**[HOLLOW PROBE: SEVERED]**
**[MEMBRANE DAMAGE: PARTIALLY REPAIRED]**
**[WAVE 3 AT DAM EMERGENCE POINT: CONTAINED]**
The corruption field dissolvedâa sphere of dark energy dissipating like smoke in wind, leaving the Hollowed within its former radius stripped of their amplification. The remaining creatures, suddenly reduced to standard Wave 3 strength, were cut down in minutes.
"Dam secure!" Dex reported. "All Hollowed neutralized. Rift is weakeningâlooks like it's closing."
Kael sank to his knees on the observation deck, his hands trembling from the dimensional manipulation. The Architect Protocol's evolved capabilities were powerful, but using them was like bench-pressing a buildingâeffective but exhausting.
Lyra caught him before he fell further. Her S-rank perception scanned his channels.
"You're strained but intact," she said. "No channel damage from the dimensional work. The beacon interface must have strengthened your pathways enough to handle the load."
"How's the membrane?"
She looked. Her amber eyes focused on something beyond the physical world, reading the dimensional fabric with the thoroughness of a post-construction inspection.
"Better," she said, and the word carried surprise. "Not just stabilizedâactually *better* than before the wave. Your repair work didn't just fix the Wave 2 damage. It improved the membrane's underlying structure. It's stronger than it was before Cain's corruption weakened it."
"The Architect Protocol doesn't just repair. It *optimizes*. Every repair incorporates the knowledge of what caused the damage, making the membrane more resistant to future attacks at the same point."
"Iterative improvement."
"Exactly." He managed a smile. "Engineering principles applied to dimensional physics."
"That's the most attractive thing you've ever said."
Despite everythingâthe exhaustion, the blood on the observation deck, the distant sounds of combat from the other emergence pointsâKael laughed.
Lyra smiled.
And the dam held.
Again.
**[WAVE 3: CONTINUING AT SECONDARY EMERGENCE POINTS]**
**[DAM: SECURE]**
**[MEMBRANE: IMPROVED]**
**[THE ARCHITECT: PROVEN]**
**[THE HOLLOW: RETREATING]**
The Hollow had tested the Architect's evolved capabilitiesâand found them sufficient.
Not invincible. Not overwhelming. But sufficient.
And for the first time in the wave cycle, the dimensional membrane was stronger after a wave than before it.
The tide was turning, slowly but undeniably.
