**[WAVE 6: COMMENCING]**
**[RIFTS: 8 OPENâALL PREVIOUS EMERGENCE POINTS + NEW LOCATION]**
**[HOLLOWED: ADVANCED VARIANTSâBOSS-CLASS ENTITIES AT EVERY RIFT]**
**[CORRUPTION FIELDS: NONE]**
**[SPECIAL EVENT: MASS AWAKENINGâIN PROGRESS]**
The Hollow changed tactics.
No corruption fields. No targeted membrane attacks. No strategic strikes at specific strongholds. Instead, the sixth wave brought eight riftsâevery previous emergence point plus a new one in the western suburbsâeach producing a boss-class entity alongside the standard Hollowed swarm.
Eight bosses. Simultaneously.
"It's testing our ability to fight on all fronts," Kael assessed, the beacon overlay showing eight red markers burning across the city. "Eight bosses means we can't concentrate our forces. Every stronghold faces a boss-level threat."
"Can we handle it?"
"We have to."
The coalition's response was the proof of five waves' worth of evolution. Not just combat trainingâ*systemic* improvement. Communication networks that coordinated responses in real-time. Supply chains that kept ammunition and medical supplies flowing during combat. Awakened combatants who'd evolved from frightened civilians into something the system had designed: warriors capable of facing interdimensional threats and winning.
At the cathedral, the boss was a creature of stone and corruptionâa Golem-type entity that emerged from the ground and tried to undermine the cathedral's foundations. Dex's combat team, enhanced by the beacon's energy, dismantled it in under an hour.
At the precinct, Okello's officers faced a shapeshifterâa Hollowed that could mimic human form, infiltrating their defenses before revealing its true nature. Her awakened team, trained specifically for this contingency after Sera's intelligence about Hollowed evolution, identified and neutralized it before it could cause significant damage.
At Bridgeport, a swarm-bossâa collective entity composed of thousands of smaller Hollowed operating as one organismâtested Zara's barrier and the students' combat coordination. Elena Vasquez's precognitive reflexes identified the swarm's command nodes, and the team systematically destroyed them, collapsing the collective intelligence into individual creatures that the barrier easily contained.
At the university, a sonic-type boss generated waves of destructive sound that threatened to collapse buildings. Gabriel's enhancement ability, combined with a newly awakened sound-manipulation ability from one of the students, turned the boss's own attacks back on itself.
At the dam, Solomon handled the water-themed boss alone. His A-rank Restoration Pulse was devastating against corrupted entitiesâpurging their corruption faster than they could regenerate, reducing the boss to clean essence that the dimensional membrane absorbed as healing.
Three bosses at the remaining emergence points were handled by rapid-response teamsâcross-stronghold units that Kael dispatched via the beacon network, arriving at each location with coordinated precision.
Eight bosses. Eight victories. No single fight lasted more than two hours.
And then the mass awakening hit.
**[MASS AWAKENING EVENT: TRIGGERED]**
**[WAVE DIMENSIONAL STRESS + BEACON ENHANCEMENT + POPULATION READINESS]**
**[AWAKENING IN PROGRESS: 127 INDIVIDUALS SIMULTANEOUSLY]**
It happened at hour four of the waveâthe moment when dimensional stress peaked and the beacon network's response amplified to maximum. Throughout the coalition, one hundred and twenty-seven non-awakened individuals crossed the essence threshold simultaneously.
The effect was visible.
Across all four strongholds, people dropped where they stoodâcaught in the awakening's grip, their bodies and minds restructuring as the system's energy poured through newly formed essence channels. Light flared in colors that spanned the spectrum: blue, gold, green, red, white, amber. The air hummed with the resonance of over a hundred simultaneous system-human interfaces activating.
"Medical teams on standby!" Gloria's voice across the beacon comm. "We've got awakenings across all positions. Most are stable, but some are exhibiting stress responsesâ"
"Let them through," Kael instructed. "The beacon network is managing the awakening process. The system knows what it's doing."
He could see it through his fifty-two percent integrationâthe system's design in action. Each awakening was calibrated to the individual: their personality, their history, their role within the community. Combat-types emerged where the front lines needed reinforcement. Utility-types appeared in logistics and communications positions. Enhancement-types bolstered the existing awakened's capabilities.
And seven individualsâscattered across all four strongholdsâmanifested abilities in categories that the coalition had never seen before.
Three Construction typesâabilities that could reshape physical matter, build structures from raw materials, create permanent defensive installations.
Two Communication typesâabilities that created mind-to-mind links between awakened, bypassing the limitations of physical communication.
One Perception typeâan ability so advanced that Dr. Vasquez would spend weeks trying to categorize it: the capacity to see probability, to perceive multiple potential futures simultaneously.
And one more Restoration type. Not A-rankâB-rank. But a second Restorer, confirming that the system was producing the tools necessary for the merger's success.
"Two hundred and thirty awakened," Sera reported, her Essence Reading processing the new signatures in real-time. "Forty percent of the population. That'sâ"
"Unprecedented. In any iteration." Kael's fragments confirmed it: no previous wave cycle had achieved forty percent awakened at Wave 6. The standard was twenty to twenty-five percent. The system was accelerating, responding to the coalition's demonstrated readiness with increased evolutionary investment.
"The system believes in us," he said.
"The system is a mechanism. It doesn't believe."
"Maybe not. But it *responds*. To effort. To growth. To the quality of what we're building. And it's responding with the most aggressive evolutionary deployment any iteration has seen."

**[WAVE 6: CONCLUDED]**
**[DURATION: 10 HOURS (EARLY TERMINATIONâSYSTEM ASSESSMENT)]**
**[COALITION CASUALTIES: 4 DEAD, 18 WOUNDED]**
**[LOWEST CASUALTY WAVE TO DATE]**
**[COALITION POPULATION POST-WAVE: 570]**
**[AWAKENED: 230 (40.4%)]**
**[MEMBRANE STABILITY: 91% (CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT)]**
Four dead. The lowest count yet. And the wave had been terminated earlyâthe system recognizing, after ten hours, that the coalition's response exceeded the wave's testing parameters.
The system was *grading* them. And they were passing with distinction.
"The membrane is at ninety-one percent stability," Lyra reported during the post-wave assessment. "Up from eighty-eight pre-wave. Solomon's restoration, Kael's interface work, and the mass awakening's evolutionary pressure have combined to push the membrane toward the system's target integrity."
"What's the target?"
"Ninety-five percent. That's the threshold for controlled merger initiation. When the membrane reaches ninety-five percent stability, the system activates the final merger sequence."
"How many more waves?"
"At the current improvement rate? Three to four. Wave 9 or 10."
"And my integration?"
"At the current passive rate, you'll be at sixty-five to seventy percent by Wave 10. With additional interface expeditions, possibly higher."
"Seventy percent to confront the Hollow's core."
"You said you needed seventy to eighty."
"The system's acceleration changes the calculation. If the merger initiates at Wave 9 or 10, I need to confront the Hollow before thatâduring the inter-wave period preceding the merger sequence. Which means I need to be ready by Wave 8 or 9."
"Two to three more waves."
"Two to three more waves to get strong enough, expand the interface beachhead far enough, and develop a strategy for confronting a consciousness that's existed since the system's creation."
"No pressure."
"Just the fate of the world. Again."
Lyra smiled. "I've been thinking about the garden."
"On the hill?"
"On the hill. I've designed the workshop. And the bell tower."
"You're designing our post-apocalypse house while the apocalypse is still happening?"
"An engineer prepares. Besidesâ" She took his hand. "If I'm going to make you a home, I want it to be perfect. And perfect takes planning."
"You are the most extraordinary person I have ever met."
"I know." She squeezed his hand. "Now come help me ring the bell. We won a wave and awakened a hundred and twenty-seven people. That deserves a celebration."
The bell rang.
Five hundred and seventy people cheered.
Kael stood beside Lyra while the cheering settled and the bell's last ring faded into the city.
The future didn't feel like a prediction anymore. It felt like something he was building, piece by piece, the same way the coalition had been builtâimperfect and loud and full of people he hadn't chosen but somehow needed.

Seven days until Wave 7.
Three more waves before the merger sequence. Maybe fewer, if the system kept accelerating.
Kael spent an hour with the new awakenings before turning in, going stronghold to stronghold through the beacon network, cataloguing their abilities and filing their names. It was administrative work. It was also the only way he knew to say: I see you. You made it. You matter.
