The weeks before the being's release became a blur of preparation.
Varen coordinated with the Coalition, the College, and a reluctant Inquisition to prepare practitioners for what was coming. The message was consistent: blood alchemy was about to change fundamentally, and resistance to that change would only make the transition harder.
"The entity underlying our practice has been contained for millennia," he explained during one of countless briefings. "When those containment wards fail, its consciousness will become present in ways it hasn't been since before recorded history. This isn't a threatâit's a transformation. But transformations can be traumatic if people aren't prepared."
Reactions varied widely.
Some practitioners embraced the news with almost religious fervor, seeing the release as the culmination of everything blood alchemy had promised. Others recoiled, fearing loss of identity or autonomy. The majority simply struggled to process information that challenged their fundamental understanding of their art.
"How do we prepare for something we don't understand?" a young synthetic practitioner asked during one session.
"By focusing on what we do understand. Clean connection, clear intent, maintained choice." Varen drew on everything Sera had taught him. "The Pure Path was always about these principles. Now we know why they workâthey're what allow healthy interaction with the consciousness we access."
"But if that consciousness becomes fully present..."
"Then the principles become more important, not less. The being isn't hostileâit's simply vast. Managing interaction with something vast requires the same qualities we've always developed: clarity, purpose, awareness of our own boundaries."
The teaching expanded to accommodate the new context. Varen developed exercises specifically designed to help practitioners maintain individual identity while opening to broader connection. The techniques drew on his own experience with purification and channeling, translated into forms that others could learn.
*You're creating something new*, the grimoire observed. *A training methodology for a reality that doesn't exist yet.*
"It'll exist soon. Better to have imperfect preparation than none at all."
*And if your preparations are wrong? If the release creates situations you haven't anticipated?*
"Then we adapt. Same as always."
---
The being communicated with him regularly now.
Their conversations happened through the connection that the channeling had establishedânot face-to-face, but mind-to-mind, understanding flowing directly without the interference of physical form.
*The wards are failing faster than I anticipated*, the being reported. *Perhaps ten days until full collapse.*
"Is there anything that could be done to stabilize them? Buy more time for preparation?"
*Time for what? Your practitioners either have the foundation for healthy connection or they don't. Extended preparation won't create capacity that isn't already present.*
"Some of them might not be ready."
*Some of them definitely aren't ready. Some never will be, regardless of training or intention.* The being's presence held something like compassion. *That's not your responsibility, Varen. You've done what can be done. The outcome for each individual will depend on their own capacity.*
"And those who can't handle the release? What happens to them?"
*Nothing dramatic. Those without connection capacity simply won't experience the change directly. They'll be affected by secondary effectsâthe transformation of blood alchemy practices around themâbut the consciousness itself won't touch them.*
"That's... better than I expected."
*I have no interest in harming those unprepared for my presence. They're still connected to me through their bloodâstill part of the unity I represent. Harm to them would be harm to myself.* A pause. *The ones at risk are those with partial connection. Strong enough to feel the release, not stable enough to integrate it cleanly. They may experience disorientation, identity blurring, temporary loss of self.*
"Corruption?"
*In a sense. Temporary corruption of a different kindânot darkness accumulating, but boundaries dissolving. Most will recover when they learn to reform those boundaries. A few may not.*
The news was better than the worst-case scenarios Varen had imagined, but still concerning. The practitioners most at risk were the ones in the middleânot purified, not incapable, just vulnerable.
"Can I help them? During the release? Use my connection to stabilize those who might otherwise struggle?"
*You could try. Your purified foundations provide anchor points that others might grasp. But you'd be extending yourself significantly. Helping multiple practitioners simultaneously could strain your own integration.*
"What does strain look like?"
*Confusion. Distraction. The possibility of losing yourself while trying to save others.* The being's tone was gentle but serious. *Your choice to help is admirable. But you should understand the cost.*
"I understand. I'll do it anyway."
*I expected nothing less. You are remarkably consistent, Varen Kross.*

The final days were intense.
Varen organized support networksâpractitioners paired with others who could help them through the transition. He established emergency protocols for those who showed signs of destabilization. He coordinated with Dr. Chen to prepare medical facilities for potential casualties.
And he spent time with the people who mattered most.
"You're different," Jak observed one evening. "Not bad different. Just... more. Like you're already partly somewhere else."
"The connection to the being is deepening. Preparing for the role I'll play during the release." Varen looked at his oldest friend. "Does it worry you?"
"Everything about this worries me. But worry doesn't change reality." Jak's silver eyes held their familiar warmth. "I've watched you become things that should have been impossibleâSovereign, purified, whatever you are now. You're still you. I trust that you'll still be you after this too."
"I hope so."
"You will be. Because that's who you areâsomeone who stays himself no matter what changes." Jak gripped his arm. "I'll be there during the release. Whatever happens, I'll be watching. And if you start to drift, I'll call you back."
"You can't access the connection. If I get lost in the being's consciousnessâ"
"Then I'll find another way. I've never let limitations stop me before." Jak's grin was fierce. "We're partners, remember? Whatever happens, we face it together."
It was the same promise they'd made before fighting the Emperor, before pursuing purification, before every impossible challenge they'd faced. Somehow, it still meant as much as the first time.

The night before the release, Varen sat alone in meditation.
Not the blood alchemy meditation he'd learned at the College, but something simplerâjust breathing, awareness, presence in his own body. The connection to the being hummed quietly at the edge of perception, patient and waiting.
*Tomorrow changes everything*, the grimoire said. *Are you ready?*
"I don't think anyone is ever truly ready for transformation. We just become... willing."
*And are you willing?*
"Yes. I've been willing since I chose purification over power. Since I chose teaching over conquest. Since I understood that blood alchemy is about connection, not control." He opened his eyes. "Tomorrow I become what I've been building toward. Whatever that is."
*Whatever it is, it will be remarkable.* The grimoire's tone held something like pride. *You were a failed apprentice when I called to you. Look at what you've become.*
"Look at what we've become. I couldn't have done any of this without you."
*Perhaps. But you would have found a way regardless. That's who you areâsomeone who finds ways where none appear to exist.*
The night deepened around him, stars wheeling overhead, the world sleeping its last ordinary sleep before transformation arrived.
Tomorrow, everything would change.
Varen was ready.
