The T7-D analysis was twelve pages.
Cross had the notebook open on the main table, three additional pages of notation analysis spread out beside it, the translation framework document that was now thirty-one pages total and still growing. She'd rearranged the table setup sometime between 1800 and 2100 — cleared Faro's documentation materials to one corner, moved the translation system's display to a more central position. The briefing had been in preparation.
"Sit," she said.
Kira sat. Marcus sat. Noa came in behind them, which Cross had apparently expected — she had a third chair positioned.
"The T7-D notation," Cross said. "The integrated pair specification and the Architect's vulnerability documentation." She looked at the pages. "I've been working from a specific question: what does the T7-D notation say happens when someone with a blessing-affecting ability attempts to interact with an integrated pair?"
"Valerian's Purification," Kira said.
"Yes. Or any ability that affects blessing-curse pair architecture. The T7-D notation is general — it doesn't reference specific abilities. But the vulnerability description is precise." Cross looked at the display. "The T7-D notation describes two scenarios for external interference with an integrated pair. The first scenario is partial interference — an ability that affects the blessing without fully disrupting the integration. The second scenario is complete interference — an ability that successfully removes the blessing from the integrated architecture."
"What happens in the second scenario," Kira said.
"The curse-side generation function loses its output channel," Cross said. "The binding agent that the curse-side has been generating has nowhere to go. It accumulates in the bearer's architecture." She looked at Kira. "The notation uses the same symbol root as the dissolution fail-safe's primary mechanism."
The room was quiet.
"The blessing removal triggers dissolution conditions," Kira said.
"Not automatically," Cross said. "The notation is careful here — it says the blessing removal *risks* dissolution conditions. The binding agent accumulation creates pressure in the architecture. Whether that pressure reaches dissolution threshold depends on the integration depth and the bearer's capacity to manage the accumulation." She looked at Kira. "A deeply integrated pair — one where the curse and blessing have been tuning to each other for decades — the accumulation would be significant. A shallow integration might not reach threshold."
"The deeper the integration, the more dangerous the removal," Marcus said.
"The deeper the integration, the more catastrophic a failed removal," Cross said. "Yes." She looked at Kira. "At your integration depth — twenty-four years on all eighteen pairs, with some pairs more deeply integrated than others — a successful blessing removal would produce a dissolution risk that the barrier group could not fully limit."
Kira looked at the table.
Valerian had the Purification ability. Or reportedly had it — the intelligence source was Ren Takahashi's surveillance network, which had a reliability record Kira trusted but which had produced theory rather than direct observation. The Purification ability removed blessings. If the T7-D notation was accurate—
"Valerian doesn't know about the T7-D integration mechanics," she said.
"Almost certainly not," Cross said. "The T7-D notation is in the laboratory site inscription cluster I labeled T7-C through T7-F. The R&C Division photographed those inscriptions — Harrow confirmed it. But the R&C translation framework was built without the keys the second alignment provided. They had the T7 cluster as partially translated notation. They didn't have the integrated pair specification."
"So Valerian's information about the Purification ability's effects is based on incomplete data," Kira said.
"Or on practical experience from previous applications that didn't involve deeply integrated pairs," Cross said. "The Purification ability may have been used against bearers with shallow or non-integrated blessing-curse pairs. Removing a blessing that isn't deeply integrated with the curse-side doesn't trigger the dissolution accumulation." She paused. "Valerian has no way to know his ability has a different effect on deeply integrated pairs."
"Unless someone tells him," Marcus said.
They looked at him.
"The mole," he said. "If the Guild mole has been feeding Protocol data to the Cult — data that includes Cross's research — the mole has been transmitting information about blessing-curse pair architecture. Not the T7-D translation, because Cross hasn't had the T7-D keys until tonight. But the conceptual framework." He paused. "The mole might have provided enough that someone in the Cult's research arm could construct a partial theory."
"Partial," Kira said.
"Partial," Marcus said. "Enough to know there's a vulnerability in deeply integrated pairs. Not enough to know the mechanism." He looked at Cross. "Has your research documentation identified the theoretical vulnerability without the T7-D specification?"
Cross looked at the notebook.
"The binding equation analysis," she said. "From two months ago. I noted that the binding agent generation's curse-side architecture would require an intact blessing-side output channel to maintain stability. I noted it as a theoretical consideration, not a confirmed mechanism." She was quiet for a moment. "If the mole transmitted that notation analysis—"
"Valerian might know that removing a deeply integrated blessing has consequences," Kira said. "Without knowing the consequences are potentially dissolution-level."
"He might know it creates instability," Cross said. "He might be planning to use the Purification ability not to cleanly remove blessings but to create instability in Protocol bearers." She looked at Kira. "Controlled instability that he could use as leverage. Or that he believes he can control."
"That he can't actually control," Kira said.
"If I'm correct about the T7-D dissolution accumulation, then no," Cross said. "He can't control it. He might trigger a dissolution event in a deeply integrated bearer without understanding that's what he's done."
"He'd be creating a walking bomb," Marcus said. Flat. Operational. Just the description.
"Yes," Cross said.

The briefing ran until midnight.
At some point, Dorian came in from the adjacent unit — he'd heard Cross's voice through the wall, which was how most late-night briefings collected additional attendees. He sat at the far end of the table and listened to the T7-D analysis without interruption.
At the end, he said: "Three hundred curse-side generation functions. All deeply integrated."
"Yes," Cross said.
He looked at the table.
"If Valerian uses the Purification ability on me," he said.
"Don't let him," Kira said.
He looked at her.
"I'm aware that's not a complete tactical instruction," she said.
"It's accurate though," he said. The dark humor that had developed over months in the network — not humor at the situation's expense but humor as a tool for approaching a situation that wasn't funny. "I'll keep it in mind."
"The Purification ability," Cross said. "The intelligence source on Valerian's acquisition — Ren's surveillance network. When was the acquisition confirmed?"
"Three weeks before the alignment," Kira said. "Ren's intercept of a Cult internal communication that referenced the High Priest's new capability. The language was theological — blessing removed from an unworthy, purified by the divine's judgment — which is consistent with how the Cult frames everything."
"Three weeks," Cross said. "And Valerian's current political posture is that the containment program was wrong but the bearer network remains unaccountable. He's conceded the specific program while maintaining the general argument." She paused. "If he's planning to use the Purification ability as a tactical tool rather than a political one—"
"He'd do it outside the political arena," Marcus said. "The Cult's public advocacy position is legal action and policy reform. Using the Purification ability in an active confrontation is outside that framework."
"Unless the confrontation is framed as defense," Dorian said.
They looked at him.
"His theological framing," Dorian said. "Blessing removed from the unworthy. If he constructs a narrative where the confrontation is a religious defense against an unaccountable bearer network — a bearer network that has just demonstrated it can execute coordinated operations at three locations simultaneously—" He paused. "The second alignment data, whenever the Directorate's investigation produces public-facing results, will document a large-scale Protocol event. That documentation becomes available to Valerian's political network."
"Through the Directorate's public reporting," Cross said. "Yes. The investigation will produce a summary document that goes to the City Council's oversight review. Which is accessible to Valerian."
"Ten days before Harrow's window closes," Kira said. "The investigation timeline."
"Valerian will have preliminary information within that window," Cross said. "Not the full T7-D translation — the investigation team doesn't have the T7-D keys either. But the fact of a coordinated multi-location Protocol event. The fact that the mountains marker involved a large-scale blessing-curse interaction the monitoring equipment couldn't categorize." She paused. "He'll know the network did something significant."
"And he'll construct a narrative around it," Marcus said.
"That's what he does," Kira said.

At 0100 she was at her window.
Not the workspace window — the window of her own room, the north-facing one she went to when the processing needed silence and nobody watching. Which was most of the time, and especially now, after a night that had involved two briefings, a conversation she hadn't expected to have with Marcus, and twelve pages of T7-D notation that had reframed a threat she'd been monitoring for months.
The Protocol at 16.8%. Stable.
Valerian had an ability that could theoretically trigger dissolution conditions in deeply integrated Protocol bearers without knowing that was what it did.
The Guild mole had potentially provided him with enough information to understand there was a vulnerability, without understanding its mechanism.
The second alignment's data would appear in public-facing Directorate documents within ten days.
She was working through the timeline when she heard Marcus at her door. She could tell it was him before he knocked — two quick raps, the same pattern for the eight months he'd been in regular proximity to her schedule.
"Come in," she said.
He came in. He looked at the window.
"You're running the timeline," he said.
"Yes."
He sat in the chair near the door, which was the chair he used in her room when the conversation was operational. When it wasn't operational, he sat somewhere else. She'd mapped this without meaning to.
"The T7-D finding," he said. "Valerian's potential use of the Purification ability against deeply integrated bearers." He paused. "The logical response is to identify which bearers are most at risk and develop a defensive posture."
"Yes," she said.
"Which Cross is working on."
"Yes," she said. "She'll have a vulnerability ranking by morning, based on the integration depth estimates she's been building from the eighteen-month measurement data."
"And Valerian's access to the second alignment's Directorate data," he said. "The response there is to manage the narrative before the data becomes public."
"Harrow," she said. "The investigation summary document. If Harrow has authority over the evidence package, she has some authority over how the summary characterizes what happened." She paused. "Not suppression — the data is documented. But framing. Context."
"Can she do it," he said.
"Harrow is good at framing without lying," Kira said. "She has a position in the Directorate that depends on being useful to both sides of the containment investigation. She'll find the language." She paused. "I think."
He looked at her.
"You said 'I think,' " he said.
"I'm working with incomplete information," she said. "The Cannot Lie curse doesn't compel certainty. It prevents me from claiming certainty I don't have." She looked at the window. "I think Harrow can manage the summary document framing. I'm not certain."
He nodded.
The chair by the door.
She looked at the chair by the door.
"Earlier," she said.
He was very still.
"That's not a topic I'm starting at 0100 with twelve pages of T7-D notation unresolved," she said.
One corner of his mouth.
"Copy that," he said.
"I'm telling you it's not nothing," she said. "That's all I'm telling you at 0100 with twelve pages of T7-D notation unresolved."
"I know," he said.
She looked at the window.
"The Guild mole," she said. "The mole's most recent access was how long ago."
"Six days," he said. "Before the alignment. The terminal cluster in the Research Division. Level 4 access, standard three-to-four day schedule." He paused. "The next scheduled access would have been tonight or tomorrow morning, but the alignment operation meant the Research Division had reduced staff last night. If the mole maintains a regular schedule, the next access is tonight."
"With the T7-D analysis in Cross's working files," Kira said.
He sat forward.
"I should have flagged that," he said.
"Yes," she said. "Cross's files are on the Research Division network?"
"The translation framework document is on the secure internal network," he said. "The T7-D analysis Cross completed tonight—"
"Is in her notebook," Kira said. "Physical format. Not the network yet." She paused. "Cross hasn't digitized tonight's work."
"I'll confirm," he said, and was at the door.
"Marcus."
He stopped.
"After you confirm," she said, "get some sleep. We'll find the mole. We have ten days and now we know what they've been taking."
He looked at her.
"Both at once," he said.
"Go," she said.
He went.
She turned back to the window and the timeline and the gap in the T7-D analysis that Cross hadn't addressed yet: what happened to the bearer when the dissolution accumulation built past their architecture's capacity to hold it. Cross had documented what happened up to threshold. The notation past threshold had been in the T7-F cluster, which was the one she'd labeled as requiring the translation keys she hadn't had until the second alignment.
The translation keys she now had.
But Cross had been working on T7-D since 2100 and hadn't reached T7-F yet.
Kira looked at the window.
T7-F.
The notation past threshold.
She'd know in the morning.
