Finding a party willing to take a D-rank hunter to a B-rank dungeon was like finding a landlord who didn't lie about the heating — technically possible, but you'd spend weeks searching.

Taeyang scrolled through the recruitment boards for three days. Every listing he responded to either rejected him outright or ghosted after seeing his rank. The hunter community was small enough that word had spread: the weird solo with the "evolved ability" who'd caught Kang Dojin's personal attention. Nobody wanted that heat.

On the fourth day, he found a party desperate enough to say yes.

The Cursed Mine of the Dread Excavator sat in the mountains outside Seoul, its entrance a yawning tunnel reinforced with rusted mining equipment from the pre-awakening era. The dungeon had formed inside an abandoned mine shaft, layering its own reality over the industrial bones of human construction.

Taeyang arrived at 5:45 AM, dressed in the cheapest armor he could find at a hunter surplus store — leather padding that would stop a knife thrust but not much else. His goblin-bone dagger was his only weapon.

The rest of the party was already there.

"That's me."

The leader looked him over. His expression suggested he was reconsidering the decision to lower his standards.

"Like what?"

The other party members had stopped their conversations to watch the exchange. Taeyang felt their eyes on him — suspicion, curiosity, and something that might have been hope.

"How does it work?" one of them asked. A woman with a longbow and a quiver of arrows that hummed with enchantment. "Your ability."

"I can see the rules the dungeon runs on," Taeyang said. "And I can change some of them. Monster behavior. Environmental conditions. That kind of thing."

"That sounds broken."

Minhyuk exchanged looks with his team. Some sort of silent communication passed between them.

"Fine," Minhyuk said. "You're in. Stay in the middle of the formation. Don't try to be a hero. Your job is to use that ability of yours to give us an edge when we need it. The rest of us will handle the fighting."

Taeyang nodded. "Works for me."

The party entered the dungeon.

The Cursed Mine's first floor was exactly what the name suggested: an abandoned mine overrun by dungeon corruption. Rusted rails and abandoned carts littered the corridors. The party charged.

The Dread Excavator roared — a sound like an industrial accident, metal screaming against metal — and launched itself at them with its drill-arm extended.

Taeyang stayed back, watching the parameter sets, looking for weaknesses. The boss's HP was too high to modify without massive SIP costs. Its damage output was similarly protected. But there were smaller things...

Every sixty seconds, the cavern roof shuddered, and chunks of stone dropped where party members had been standing moments before. The first collapse missed everyone. The second caught the healer's arm, dislocating it. The third killed one of the melee fighters outright — a hundred tons of rock crushing her faster than she could dodge.

Taeyang watched her die and felt nothing.

No — not nothing. He felt like he should feel something. But the distance between himself and the party was too great. He was watching code execute. Watching parameters resolve. The woman had been reduced from a person to a failed dodge roll.

When had he started thinking like that?

The loot materialized beside the rubble. Good stuff — B-rank equipment, rare materials, a skill book for [Earth Manipulation] that the mage immediately claimed. The party gathered what they could, but their movements were subdued.

One of their members was dead. Crushed under the same mechanic Taeyang had eventually turned to their advantage.

If he'd figured it out faster...

But he hadn't. And she was dead. And the party was looking at him differently now — not as a D-rank burden, but as something else. Something that made dungeons play by different rules.

Minhyuk approached him as they prepared to exit.

"The Association is going to hear about this," Minhyuk said. "A D-rank clearing a B-rank dungeon with seven party members. That's not the kind of thing that stays quiet."

"I know."

"You don't seem worried."

Taeyang looked at the rubble pile, at the spot where the Iron Wolves fighter had been crushed, at the exit portal shimmering with escape.

"I'm too useful to kill," he said. "And too dangerous to ignore. They'll keep watching. Keep waiting. And I'll keep breaking."

He walked through the portal without looking back.

Behind him, the dungeon collapsed into nothing, its code dissolving back into the System's infrastructure.

Somewhere in that infrastructure, a flag was set.
