The Rift Keeper fought like reality itself was its weapon.
Minsu's shield caught the first attack β a wave of void energy that should have erased him from existence. The tank staggered, his barrier flickering, but held his ground.
Sumin circled behind the boss, blades finding gaps in its crystalline body. Each strike drew dark ichor that evaporated into the void. Junho's fire bolts hammered its center mass, dealing sustained damage that should have been overwhelming.
But the Void Consumption was doing its job.
**[Rift Keeper: HP 180,000 β 165,000 β 172,000 β 160,000 β 168,000]**
For every three hits they landed, the boss healed two hits worth of damage. The threshold wasn't being exceeded β their burst damage was high, but not high enough.
"We're not making progress," Junho called out. "The healing is too fast."
Taeyang checked his SIP: 35 points. Enough for maybe three significant modifications. He needed to disable the Void Consumption, but when he reached for that parameter...
```
[BOSS: The Rift Keeper]
[Void Consumption β Edit Permission: Restricted (Anti-Break Layer 2)]
```
Locked. The System had protected the boss's key mechanic from modification.
"The consumption is locked," Taeyang shouted. "I can't disable it directly."
"Then disable something else!" Sumin's voice was strained. "We can't keep this pace forever."
Think. What else could work?
The Dimensional Prison was still on cooldown β twenty seconds until it activated. If the boss trapped someone in a pocket dimension, they'd be stuck until it died or released them voluntarily.
He could disable that. But it wouldn't help with the healing problem.
What about the boss's damage output? If he reduced its attack power, the team could fight longer, deal more damage, maybe exceed the absorption threshold through sustained effort.
**[PARAMETER MODIFICATION ATTEMPTED]**
**[Rift Keeper: Attack Power β Reducing by 50%]**
The membrane of resistance was thick, but not impenetrable. He pushedβ
**[System Integrity Cost: 15 SIP]**
**[Remaining: 20/100]**
**[Attack Power: 800-1200 β 400-600]**
The Rift Keeper's next attack hit Minsu for half the expected damage. The tank absorbed it easily, his barrier barely flickering.
"Whatever you did, it worked!" Minsu called. "I can tank this all day."
But the boss's HP wasn't dropping faster. The absorption rate was unchanged. They were still losing the war of attrition.
Taeyang looked at the parameter set again, desperate for anything he'd missed.
And then he saw it.
```
[BOSS: The Rift Keeper]
[Void Consumption: Absorbs damage, converts to healing]
[Absorption Rate: 5000 damage/second]
[Conversion Efficiency: 100%]
```
Conversion Efficiency. The ratio of absorbed damage to healing. If he could reduce that, the boss would absorb the same amount but heal less.
But wait β that wasn't the only interpretation. The parameter was called "Efficiency." Efficiency could mean different things in different contexts.
He reached for it, analyzing:
```
[Void Consumption - Conversion Efficiency]
[Description: Ratio of absorbed damage applied to HP restoration]
[Current Value: 100%]
[Edit Permission: Available]
```
Available. Not locked. He could modify this.
Twenty SIP remaining. The modification would cost... he estimated... 10-15 points. He'd have almost nothing left afterward, but if it worked, the boss would stop healing entirely.
**[PARAMETER MODIFICATION DETECTED]**
**[Rift Keeper: Void Consumption Efficiency changed from 100% to 0%]**
**[System Integrity Cost: 12 SIP]**
**[Remaining: 8/100]**
The modification took hold.
And immediately, Taeyang realized he'd made a terrible mistake.
---
Conversion Efficiency at 0% didn't mean "no healing."
It meant "no conversion." The absorbed damage had to go somewhere. And if it wasn't being converted to HP...
The Rift Keeper screamed β a sound that tore through dimensions. Its body swelled, dark energy building inside it as the absorbed damage accumulated without release.
**[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]**
**[Void Consumption: Conversion disabled]**
**[Absorbed energy: Redirecting to attack parameters]**
**[Attack Power: 400-600 β 800-1200 β 1600-2400 β 3200-4800]**
"GET BACK!" Taeyang screamed.
Too late.
The Rift Keeper's next attack wasn't a void wave. It was an explosion β all the accumulated damage from the fight released at once in a sphere of pure destruction.
Minsu's shield shattered. The tank flew backward, his body ragdolling through the air. Junho's barrier spell activated automatically, absorbing enough to save his life but sending him crashing to the ground, unconscious.
Sumin was faster. She dodged sideways, the explosion's edge catching her arm instead of her center. The limb went numb. Her blades clattered to the ground.
Taeyang was the furthest from the blast. The shockwave threw him back, but he kept his feet.
The Rift Keeper stood in the center of devastation, its attack power now four times its original value. The absorbed damage had made it stronger instead of weaker.
And his SIP was at 8.
"Fall back," Sumin gasped, cradling her dead arm. "We need toβ"
The boss didn't let them fall back.
It moved like a tear in reality, crossing the distance in an instant. Its hand drove toward Sumin's chest β a killing blow that would end her before she could react.
Taeyang spent his remaining SIP.
**[Rift Keeper: Movement Speed reduced by 90%]**
**[System Integrity Cost: 8 SIP]**
**[Remaining: 0/100]**
The boss slowed to a crawl. Its killing strike became a glacial advance, hand moving through air that had become thick as tar.
But it was still moving. Still advancing. And Taeyang was empty.
"Go!" he shouted at Sumin. "Get the others. Exit portal. NOW."
Sumin didn't argue. She grabbed Junho's unconscious body, dragging him toward the platform's edge where the portal back to the dungeon's earlier floors waited. Minsu was already stumbling in that direction, his shield-arm hanging useless.
The Rift Keeper's slowed movement gave them time. Thirty seconds, maybe. Enough to reach the portal, retreat through earlier floors, exit the dungeon entirely.
But Taeyang couldn't follow.
The boss chamber's exit sealed when the boss fight started. The only way out was through the boss β or dying.
He stood alone on the platform, facing a monster he'd accidentally supercharged, with zero resources and combat skills that couldn't scratch its surface.
The movement speed modification would wear off in roughly a minute. Then the Rift Keeper would kill him.
He had a minute to figure out how to survive.
---
Think. There has to be something.
The boss's parameters were off-limits now. No SIP meant no modifications. His physical combat training from Yeojin was still basic β nowhere near enough to fight a B-rank boss alone.
What did he have?
A knife. Useless against that much HP.
Armor. Would buy him maybe one hit before shattering.
Skills. [King's Authority] was still available β he hadn't used it since the early dungeons. But commanding a boss was different from commanding regular monsters. The resistance would be massive.
And [Dungeon Break] itself was empty. No SIP, no modifications.
But wait.
[Dungeon Break] wasn't just about modifications. It was about reading parameters too. Seeing the rules. Understanding the architecture.
He looked at the Rift Keeper with new eyes, scanning not for what he could change, but for what he could understand.
```
[BOSS: The Rift Keeper]
[Status: Overloaded (attack power exceeds design parameters)]
[Instability: 78%]
[Warning: Entity behavior may become unpredictable]
```
Instability at 78%. The boss wasn't just stronger β it was unstable. He'd broken its parameter balance by redirecting all that absorbed energy.
Could he use that?
The Rift Keeper was still moving toward him, slow but inexorable. Thirty seconds had passed. Thirty more until full speed returned.
He ran toward the boss.
Not away β toward. If instability was a weakness, he needed to exploit it before the boss stabilized.
His knife was pathetic against its HP. But HP wasn't the only parameter that mattered.
He ducked under its slowed arm, rolled past its legs, and drove his blade into the back of its knee β the joint where crystalline body met crystalline body. Not to damage. To destabilize.
**[INSTABILITY: 78% β 81%]**
It worked. Physical impacts increased the instability. The overloaded energy had nowhere to go, and disrupting the boss's structure made the problem worse.
He struck again. Knee. Shoulder. The base of its spine. Each hit did almost no HP damage, but the instability climbed.
**[INSTABILITY: 84%]**
**[INSTABILITY: 87%]**
**[INSTABILITY: 91%]**
The movement speed modification wore off. The Rift Keeper roared, full power returning.
Its enhanced fist swung toward Taeyang's head.
He dodged. Barely. Yeojin's training saved him β the reflexes she'd beaten into his body moving before his mind caught up.
Strike. Dodge. Strike. He was dancing with death, landing hits that barely registered while avoiding blows that would atomize him.
**[INSTABILITY: 94%]**
The boss was shaking now, its body flickering between solid and void, energy bleeding from cracks in its crystalline form.
**[INSTABILITY: 97%]**
One more hit. One more and maybeβ
The Rift Keeper caught him.
Not with an attack β with its Dimensional Prison. The ability had come off cooldown, and he hadn't been watching.
Reality twisted. The platform disappeared. Taeyang found himself in a pocket dimension β a sphere of void with no exits, no floor, no up or down.
**[DIMENSIONAL PRISON: ACTIVATED]**
**[Exit condition: Boss death or voluntary release]**
Trapped. The boss was outside, stabilizing. His instability strategy had failed.
He floated in the void, waiting to die.
---
But death didn't come.
The pocket dimension shuddered. Cracked. Something was wrong.
**[WARNING: DIMENSIONAL PRISON UNSTABLE]**
**[Reason: Host entity instability exceeds safe parameters]**
**[INSTABILITY: 99%]**
The pocket dimension was part of the boss. And the boss was about to collapse.
Taeyang felt the dimension begin to tear. The void around him fractured into shards of reality. Through the cracks, he could see the boss chamber β the Rift Keeper thrashing, its overloaded body finally failing.
**[BOSS: The Rift Keeper β CRITICAL INSTABILITY]**
**[Entity integrity: Collapsing]**
The dimension shattered. Taeyang fell through fragments of reality, tumbling back onto the platform. The Rift Keeper exploded β not an attack, but a structural failure. Crystalline shards flew everywhere. Dark energy dissipated into the void.
**[BOSS DEFEATED]**
**[HP: 0 (SYSTEM OVERRIDE: Instability collapse)]**
He lay on the platform, staring at the purple-black void above, and started laughing.
He'd won. By accident. By exploiting instability he'd created through a mistake. By surviving long enough for his error to become a strategy.
**[DUNGEON CLEARED: The Void Rift]**
**[Clear Time: 47 minutes]**
**[Loot: Exceptional (Void Crystals Γ15, Rift Core Γ1, Boss Material: Keeper's Heart)]**
The loot materialized beside him. Void Crystals β the whole reason for this mission. Enough to satisfy the Syndicate.
But he couldn't stop thinking about the mistake. The wrong parameter. Attack power quadrupled because he'd misunderstood what "efficiency" meant.
If the instability hadn't been there β if the boss had been stable β he'd be dead.
He'd gotten lucky. Luck is not a strategy.
The exit portal opened. Taeyang limped through, carrying loot and lessons in equal measure.
Don't assume. Don't guess. Understand parameters completely before modifying them.
Or next time, the luck might not be there.
