"Continue session," Taeyang said.

Thirty meters underground. In a hub that required surface transit through a mountain trail in February dark. A sixty-year-old man who had been running at capacity for seven hours and whose body had finally stopped cooperating with his will.

"The hub load," Taeyang said. "Chojeong-ssi."

Chojeong-ssi's direct communication: *I have assumed full hub operational load. The primary operator is unconscious. His vital signs are present but declining. He requires medical assistance that cannot be provided at this location.*

"Can you sustain full load?"

*I can sustain full load for the membrane's operational monitoring. My processing capacity with dual load is at eighty-nine percent of maximum. The strain is within the range that the archive describes as recoverable.* A pause in the code-format. The engineer's equivalent of a breath. *He should not be here when he wakes. He should be on the surface. In a hospital. He has been underground for fourteen months and his body has been running on a resource pool that is now depleted.*

Taeyang turned to Jiyeon. "We need to get him out."

"The trail ascent takes thirty minutes in optimal conditions. In his condition, carrying him—"

"Yeojin," Dojin's voice came through the perimeter communication. The Sword Saint, who had been running security watch for seven hours and had heard the relay cut out through the hub's ambient vibration. "Yeojin can carry him. The bodyguard's physical capability is sufficient."

Yeojin's voice, already in motion: "On my way down."

The membrane was complete. Hyungsoo was unconscious. The Deep's signal was flowing. Chojeong-ssi was running the hub alone for the first time in fourteen months.

Then the Stillness activated.

The scanning field registered it as a frequency change. The Stillness's aligned architecture, which had been mirroring the membrane's filter configuration and channeling processed signal to assist the final sector's conversion, shifted. The alignment held but the direction changed. Input became output. The mechanism that had been receiving the Deep's signal through the membrane's filter architecture started transmitting.

"Jiyeon," Taeyang said. "The Stillness."

The transmission was not going down. The blueprints that the emergent process had received from the Stillness, the structural specifications that described a signal pathway leading deeper into the geology below the base layer, the output path that went down, down, into whatever lay beneath the Deep: wrong. The blueprints had been wrong, or the blueprints had been right for a different configuration, or the blueprints described what the Stillness did when the signal was raw and unfiltered and the membrane changed the equation.

The Stillness's output was going up.

Through the cage's infrastructure layer. Through the architecture that the team operated in. Through the convergence sites, the mana layer, the geological structure between the base layer and the surface. Up. Toward the city.

Toward eight million people sleeping above the cage's ceiling.

"What is it transmitting?" Mina asked. Her voice was flat. Catastrophe got the same register as normal data. The alternative was not processing it at all.

Taeyang pushed the scanning field to full depth. Eighty-seven percent. The Stillness's output signal, rising through the infrastructure, and he couldn't read it. The signal was in the Stillness's native format, predating the cage, predating the engineering language, predating everything his scanning field had learned to parse.

The signal was reaching the surface layer.

In seconds it would hit the city.

And Taeyang had no idea what it would do when it got there.
