Sunday in Willow Creek was a different animal entirely.
Maya had forgotten the particular quality of small-town Sundaysâthe stillness, the slow rhythms, the way the entire town seemed to exhale and settle. In San Francisco, Sundays were just Saturdays with better brunch options. Here, they meant something.
She woke to church bells. The sound traveled across town from the white-steepled church on Oak Street, penetrating the Victorian's walls with steady, unhurried insistence. Grandma Rose had attended every Sunday without fail, dragging a reluctant teenage Maya along until Maya was old enough to refuse.
Maya hadn't been inside a church in twelve years. She had no intention of changing that today.
Instead, she made coffee, settled into the sunroom, and opened her laptop. The Henderson designs needed refinementsâDerek had sent a passive-aggressive email at midnight about "maintaining professional standards" and "the importance of physical presence." Maya responded with detailed notes on the structural modifications and a reminder that she was a founding partner, not an employee.
By ten, the church bells had stopped, which meant the congregation would be filing into the bakery and the diner for post-service socializing. Maya's phone buzzed: a text from Hannah.
*Come to the bakery. I have cinnamon rolls the size of your head and information about your mystery soldier.*
Maya was in the car within three minutes.

Santos Bakery occupied the corner of Main and Second, a brick building with a blue awning and windows that always glowed with warm light. Hannah had transformed it from a dated shop into something inviting and modern while keeping the original character. The display cases gleamed with croissants, muffins, scones, and pastries Maya couldn't name but desperately wanted.
The bakery was packed. Sunday after church was peak hours, and every table was occupied by families, couples, and elderly regulars who appeared to have assigned seats. Conversation hummed at the pleasant frequency of people with nowhere urgent to be.
Every head turned when Maya walked in.
She felt the shiftâthe subtle pause, the whispered names, the rapid-fire assessment of a prodigal daughter by people who'd known her since birth. Maya lifted her chin and walked to the counter, where Hannah was boxing up an order with efficient grace.
"Back room," Hannah mouthed, tilting her head toward a door behind the counter.
Maya slipped through. The back room was a combined office, storage area, and break room, dominated by a scarred wooden table covered in baking invoices and a laptop showing a genealogy website.
"Sit." Hannah appeared a moment later with two enormous cinnamon rolls and two cups of coffee. She closed the door and the noise of the bakery dimmed to a murmur.
"Okay," Hannah said, pulling her laptop closer. "I couldn't sleep last night. Kept thinking about those letters. So I did some research."
"You didn't have toâ"
"Shut up and let me be excited about this." Hannah turned the laptop to face Maya. "I searched military records for soldiers with the surname Sullivan who were stationed in the Pacific Northwest during 1943. There were several, but only one who matches the profile: Lieutenant James Sullivan, born 1920 in Portland, Oregon. Irish-American family, father owned a shipping company. James enlisted in 1942 and was assigned to... hang on..." She scrolled. "The 41st Infantry Division, which trained at Camp Murray in Washington before shipping out to the Pacific Theater."
"Pacific Theater," Maya repeated. "But the letters mention Europe."
"That's the thing. His official record says Pacific. But there are gapsâperiods where his assignment is listed as classified." Hannah looked up, eyes bright with the hunger of someone who'd just found a loose thread in a mystery. "Whatever James Sullivan was doing during those gaps, the military didn't want anyone to know about it."
Maya stared at the screen. James Sullivan. She finally had a full name.
"There's more." Hannah navigated to another page. "He was declared missing in action in November 1944. No body was ever recovered. The family was notified, but the details are... vague. 'Lost during operations in the European theater.' That's all it says."
"So he was in Europe. Despite his official assignment to the Pacific."
"Which means either someone made an error, or he was transferred to a classified operation. During World War II, that usually meant intelligence work. OSSâthe Office of Strategic Services. Predecessor to the CIA."
Maya's mind was spinning. James SullivanâJâhad been a soldier, possibly an intelligence operative, who'd fallen in love with her grandmother during the war. He'd disappeared during a classified mission in Europe and was never found.
"What about the sister?" Maya asked. "Margaret?"
Hannah's expression shifted to something complicatedâpart triumph, part caution. "Margaret Sullivan married a man named Robert Hayes in 1948. They settled in Portland. Robert died in 1990."
"And Margaret?"
"Margaret Sullivan-Hayes is ninety-five years old and lives in an assisted care facility in Portland." Hannah paused. "She's alive, Maya."
For a second Maya just sat there. The sister of the man who'd loved Grandma Roseâthe woman J had mentioned in his lettersâwas alive and living three hours away.
"I have to talk to her," Maya said.
"I know. But Mayaâshe's ninety-five. She might not remember. She might not want to talk about it. And this is her brother's story too. We can't just barge in and demand answers."
"I know." But Maya was already planning the trip, already composing questions, already imagining what Margaret might be able to tell her.

She drove back to the Victorian with the cinnamon roll half-eaten and her mind full of James Sullivan. The house greeted her with its usual symphony of creaks, and Maya went straight to the attic.

Maya read the letter three times. *Our families are different.* What did that mean? James was Irish-American, from a prominent Portland family. Rose wasâ
Maya realized she didn't actually know what Rose's maiden name was. She'd always been Grandma Rose, then Rose Chen after marrying Henry. But before that? Rose had come from somewhere. She had a family, a background, a history that predated both the war and Willow Creek.
The letter mentioned that James's father would never approve. That their families were "different." In 1943, that could mean many thingsâclass differences, ethnic differences, religious differences. Whatever the divide, it had been real enough to threaten the relationship.
And yet they'd loved each other anyway.
Maya's phone rang. Derek.
"The Henderson team loved the revised designs," he said without preamble. "They want to move forward. But they have questions about the atrium specifications that only you can answer."
"Email them to me."
"Maya, when are you coming back?"
"I told you. Sixty days."
"That's insane. You know that's insane, right? You're sitting in some backwater town sorting through a dead woman's belongings while your careerâ"
"Choose your next words carefully, Derek."
The steel in her voice surprised them both. Derek fell silent.
"Grandma Rose was not just a dead woman," Maya continued, her voice low and controlled. "She raised me. She's the reason I'm an architect, the reason I understand space and structure and beauty. And the house she left meâthe life she left meâdeserves my time and attention. So I will answer Henderson's questions. I will deliver the designs. But I will do it from here, on my schedule. Are we clear?"
"Crystal," Derek said tightly.
She hung up and realized her hands were shakingânot from anger but from the unfamiliar sensation of choosing something personal over something professional. It wasn't a thing she did.
But then again, she'd never been her grandmother's granddaughter in quite this way before. Maybe there was room for both.

Evening came soft and slow. Maya was in the garden, pulling weeds by the last light, when Eli appeared at the fence. He was holding somethingâa bottle of wine and two glasses.
"Peace offering," he said. "For being harsh the other day."
Maya straightened, brushing dirt from her knees. "You weren't harsh. You were honest."
"Same thing, in my experience." He held up the bottle. "It's a good Pinot. Oregon grown. Rose's favorite."
They sat on the back porch, watching the garden darken. Eli poured, and they drank in a silence that was almost comfortable. The wine was excellentârich and earthy, with a finish that lingered.
"I found out his name," Maya said. "The soldier who wrote the letters. James Sullivan."
Eli turned to look at her. "Sullivan? Like the Sullivan family from Portland?"
"You know them?"
"Everyone in Oregon knows the Sullivans. Old money. Shipping. There's a Sullivan Building downtown Portlandâbig Art Deco thing on Burnside. They were one of the most prominent families on the West Coast."
"And one of them fell in love with my grandmother."
"Apparently." Eli took a slow sip of wine. "You said the letters mentioned a divide between their families. The Sullivans were old-money Irish Catholic. If your grandmother was from a different backgroundâdifferent class, different ethnicityâthat would have been a serious problem in the 1940s."
"I don't even know Rose's maiden name."
"Chen was Henry's name. Before that..." Eli frowned. "I might be able to find out. The town records go back to the founding. If Rose lived here before the war, there'll be a record."
"She didn't live here before the war. She moved to Willow Creek after marrying Henry in 1952. Before that, I don't know where she was."
"Portland, maybe. If that's where she met James."
Maya stared into her wine. The pieces were assembling, but slowly, and the gaps were enormous. She had a name, a family, a sister who was still alive. But the central questions remained: What had happened to James Sullivan? What was the family secret? And why had Rose kept this love story hidden for the rest of her life?
"I'm going to Portland," she said. "To see Margaret Sullivan-Hayes. James's sister."
Eli set his glass down. "I'll drive you."
"You don't have toâ"
"Maya." His voice was firm. "You're going to visit a ninety-five-year-old woman to ask about her dead brother. You might need someone with you. Not for the driveâfor after."
She wanted to argue. But he was right, and she was tired of fighting kindness when it was offered without strings.
"Okay," she said.
They finished the wine as the stars appearedâmore stars than Maya had seen in years, the sky over Willow Creek untouched by the light pollution that turned San Francisco's night sky orange.
"I missed this," Maya admitted, so quietly she wasn't sure Eli heard.
But he did. "The stars?"
"Everything."
Eli didn't respond. He just poured the last of the wine, and they sat together in the darkness.
