Maya didn't go to bed that night.

She carried the cedar chest downstairs to the kitchen table, made a pot of Rose's brutally strong coffee, and began to read. The unsent letters—Rose's letters, written to James but never mailed—were a revelation. Where James's letters had been the passionate outpourings of a soldier in love, Rose's were something else entirely: the chronicle of a woman surviving.

The earliest were dated from Minidoka, 1942.

*Dear James,*

*I am writing this in the laundry building because it is the only place where I can be alone. The barrack walls are so thin I can hear Mr. Yamamoto snoring three units away, and if I cry, everyone will know. I've decided I won't cry. Not here. Not where they can see.*

*The dust is the worst part. It gets in everything—our food, our clothes, our hair. Mama sweeps the floor three times a day, and by evening you can't tell. Papa coughs all night. The doctor says it's the dust, that it will get better. It won't get better. Nothing here gets better.*

*I think of you constantly. I think of the night before they took us—when you came to the house and held me and said you'd get me out. You couldn't, James. No one could. But I loved you for trying. I loved you for being the only person who looked at me and saw Rose instead of "the enemy."*

*I won't send this letter. I can't risk them finding it—the guards read our mail, and a letter from a Japanese girl to an Irish soldier's son would cause trouble for us both. So I'll write to you in silence and keep the words safe until we can speak them out loud.*

Maya's hands shook. She set the letter down and picked up the next one.

*Dear James,*

*Something happened today. I can't write the details—even in a letter I'll never send, I can't put the words on paper. But I want you to know that I survived it. That's all that matters. I survived, and when I closed my eyes tonight, I thought of your hands—gentle hands, James, hands that touch me like I'm something sacred—and I told myself that this is not the whole story. This place is not the ending.*

*The woman in the next unit, Mrs. Oshiro, taught me a word today: gaman. It means enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity. She said the camp is a test of gaman, and those who practice it will emerge stronger than those who built the fences.*

*I am practicing gaman, James. Every hour of every day.*

Maya set the letter down and pressed both hands flat on the table, breathing slowly, deliberately. The implications of that letter—the unnamed "something"—aligned with what Margaret had said about men with absolute authority who weren't all honorable.

Her grandmother had been assaulted. In an American internment camp, on American soil. And she had borne it and said nothing and kept writing letters she would never send.

She picked up the next letter, and the next, and the next. Rose's voice grew stronger as the months passed. She wrote about organizing a school for the children in the camp. About starting a garden in the alkaline desert soil—a small act of defiance against the bleakness. About teaching English to the Issei—the first-generation immigrants whose command of English was limited. About a friendship with a woman named Fumiko who made paper cranes and said each one carried a wish.

*Dear James,*

*I made a crane for you today. Fumiko says that if you fold a thousand, your wish comes true. I've made forty-seven. Only nine hundred and fifty-three to go.*

*My wish is simple: I want to stand in a garden with you. Not a desert garden, not a camp garden, but a real garden—the kind with roses and lavender and a tree old enough to have seen the world before it went mad. I want to stand there with you and feel the sun on my face and know that I am free.*

*Is that too much to ask? Some days it feels impossible. Other days it feels like the only thing worth fighting for.*

Maya looked up from the letter and stared out the kitchen window at the garden. Rose's garden. The garden with roses and lavender and an oak tree old enough to have seen the world before it went mad.

Rose had built her wish. Right here, in Willow Creek. She had taken the dream she'd dreamed in an internment camp and made it real, season by season, year by year.

Dawn came without Maya noticing. She was deep in the later letters—1943 now, the year of the secret marriage—when sunlight hit the kitchen window and startled her back into the physical world. Her coffee was cold. Her back ached. Her eyes felt sandblasted.

But she couldn't stop.

The 1943 letters told the story of Rose's release from Minidoka. She'd been sponsored by a family in Portland—the conditions of release required a sponsor outside the exclusion zone—and had found work in a factory. The sponsor family, the Hendersons, treated her decently but with the careful distance of people who wanted to be kind without being involved.

Rose and James had reconnected immediately. His military training was based in the Pacific Northwest, and he had passes on weekends. They met in secret—parks, libraries, hotel rooms that didn't ask questions about the races of their guests.

*Dear James,*

*Last night was—I don't have words in English for what last night was. Maybe there aren't words in any language. You touched me like the world was ending, and maybe it is, but if this is the end, then I want it to be your hands and your mouth and the sound of your voice saying my name the way you say it—like a prayer, like an answer, like the only word that matters.*

*I have never known my body as anything but a thing to be controlled—by my parents, by the camp, by the guards. You make it mine. When you touch me, I am not a number or a category or a prisoner. I am Rose, and I am loved, and I am so terribly, beautifully alive.*

*We are reckless. We both know it. If your father finds out, if the authorities learn that a Japanese woman and an Irish man are—but I can't bring myself to care. Not after what I've survived. The world took everything from me. You are the one thing I took back.*

Maya set the letter down and covered her face with her hands. The intimacy was staggering—not just the physical description, though that was vivid enough, but the emotional truth beneath it. Rose had reclaimed her body through love. James hadn't saved her—she was too strong for that kind of narrative—but he'd given her a space where she could save herself.

The marriage certificate made sense now. June 1943—Rose had been out of the camp for less than six months. James was about to ship out for the classified European mission. They'd married in secret because they wanted the bond to be real, legal, permanent—even if the world would never acknowledge it.

A Japanese woman marrying a white man in 1943 Oregon. Maya tried to imagine the courage it had taken. Anti-miscegenation laws were still on the books in many states. Oregon had repealed its law in 1951, which meant that in 1943, Rose and James's marriage might not even have been legally recognized.

They'd married anyway.

At eight, Maya heard a knock on the front door. She answered it to find Hannah with a bag of pastries and an expression of barely contained curiosity.

"You look terrible," Hannah said.

"Thank you."

"Have you slept?"

"No."

"Are you going to tell me what happened in Portland?"

Maya let her in and told her everything. Hannah sat at the kitchen table with a croissant forgotten in her hand, eyes growing wider with every revelation. When Maya got to the marriage certificate, Hannah's jaw literally dropped.

"Rose was married to James Sullivan. Before Henry."

"Before Henry."

"And she was Japanese. From an internment camp."

"Minidoka, Idaho."

Hannah sat back and released a breath that seemed to deflate her entirely. "Maya. This is—I don't even know what this is. This is history. This is—"

"This is my family," Maya said. "And I knew nothing about it."

Hannah reached across the table and gripped Maya's hand. "You know now. That's what matters."

"I need to find out what happened to James. Margaret thinks he might have survived the war. There's a classified file—"

"How do you get a classified file declassified?"

"I have no idea. But I'm going to find out."

Hannah studied her with the assessing look of a woman who'd known Maya since they were six years old. "You're not leaving, are you? Not just the sixty days—you're invested in this."

Maya hesitated. The honest answer was complicated. The simple answer was: "I can't leave until I know the truth."

"Good." Hannah squeezed her hand. "Because Willow Creek needs you. And whether you'll admit it or not, you need Willow Creek."

After Hannah left, Maya went to Rose's bedroom. She hadn't been in there since arriving—had avoided it, actually, the way she'd avoided most of the house's emotional geography. But now she entered with purpose, looking at the room with new eyes.

Rose's bedroom was modest—a queen bed with a handmade quilt, a dresser with a mirror, a window seat overlooking the garden. The walls were painted a soft blue that Maya had always loved as a child. On the nightstand: a reading lamp, a book of Mary Oliver's poetry, and a framed photograph of Maya's parents on their wedding day.

Maya picked up the photograph. Her father—Thomas Chen—smiled from the frame with the quiet warmth she barely remembered. He'd been killed in a car accident when Maya was eight, along with her mother, Patricia. A wet road, a sharp curve, a truck in the wrong lane.

But Margaret had said James was Rose's love, and the outline of this story suggested Thomas might have been James's son, not Henry's. Maya looked at her father's face and tried to see it: the high cheekbones, the broad shoulders, the light-colored eyes that had always seemed surprising against his Asian features.

Light-colored eyes. Like an Irishman's.

Maya set the photograph down carefully.

If Thomas was James's son—if Rose had been pregnant when James disappeared—then Henry Chen had married Rose knowing she carried another man's child. He had raised Thomas as his own. He had loved a woman who loved someone else, and he had done it quietly, without complaint, for forty-three years.

There were so many kinds of love in this story, Maya thought. Not just the passionate kind—the wartime romance, the forbidden devotion—but the steadier kind. The man who marries a woman with a broken heart and spends forty years making it whole.

Maya sat on Rose's bed and looked out the window at the garden—at the oak tree, at the roses, at the lavender that had gone wild and beautiful—and felt, for the first time in years, that she was exactly where she was supposed to be.

Her phone buzzed. A text from Eli.

*How are you?*

She typed back: *I found the marriage certificate. Rose and James were married in 1943.*

Three dots appeared, disappeared, appeared again.

*Come over for dinner. I'll cook. You can tell me everything.*

Maya stared at the message. Dinner at Eli's house. Across the yard she'd crossed a thousand times as a teenager, through the gate in the fence that had always stood open between them.

*Okay,* she typed.

She set the phone down and looked at the photograph of her parents one more time. Her father's light eyes stared back at her from across the decades, and Maya thought she could see, in them, something of a soldier who had loved a woman named Rose across every boundary the world could devise.

"I'll find the truth," she told the photograph. "I promise."
