Not email—an actual letter, handwritten on cream stationery, slipped through the Victorian's mail slot sometime during the night. Maya found it on the foyer floor at 6 a.m., between the construction dust and the contractor's estimate for the plumbing work, and she knew before she opened it that it was trouble.

The handwriting was unfamiliar—precise, angular, the kind of penmanship that suggested discipline and deliberation. The envelope had no return address, no postmark. Hand-delivered.

Maya read the letter three times, then called Catherine.

"An anonymous threat," Catherine said, not sounding particularly surprised. "Classic intimidation tactic. They're trying to scare you into backing off."

"Who's 'they'?"

"Could be Blackwell's people. Could be someone connected to the CIA who doesn't want the story published. Could be anyone with an interest in keeping the Sullivan case buried."

"What do I do?"

"You document it, photograph it, and give the original to me for forensic analysis. Then you keep doing exactly what you were doing." Catherine's voice was steel wrapped in silk. "Maya, this is what happens when you poke powerful people. They poke back. The question is whether you flinch."

"I don't flinch."

"Good. Neither did Rose."

Maya showed the letter to Eli over breakfast—in his kitchen, because the Victorian's kitchen was currently being gutted for the plumbing replacement.

He read it once, set it down, and said: "I'm going to talk to the sheriff."

"About an anonymous letter?"

"About a threat delivered to your home. That's a crime, Maya—intimidation, possibly stalking. Jim Kowalski is the current sheriff, and whatever his predecessor's sins, Jim is a straight arrow. He'll take it seriously."

"I don't want to escalate—"

"Someone hand-delivered a threatening letter to your house in the middle of the night. It's already escalated."

He was right, and she knew it. But the letter had unsettled her in a way she hadn't expected—not because of the threat itself, which was vague enough to be legally ambiguous, but because of the implication. Someone was watching. Someone knew about the publication plans. Someone had come to her house, in the dark, and slipped a letter through her door.

"I'll go to the sheriff," she conceded. "But I'm not stopping. The story publishes on the fifteenth."

"I know." Eli took her hand across the breakfast table. "I just want you safe."

"I am safe. I have a town full of people who've decided I belong to them, a historian who's already sent the evidence to three separate archives, and a veterinarian who could probably take out a home intruder with a sedation dart."

"I could. The dosage would need adjusting, but the principle is the same."

"You're joking."

"I'm mostly joking." His grip on her hand tightened. "Maya. Promise me you'll be careful."

"I promise."

She meant it. But she also knew that careful had its limits. The truth about Rose and James and the children was not something that could be handled carefully. It was a wave, building and building, and when it broke, careful would be irrelevant.

Sheriff Jim Kowalski was everything his predecessor was not.

He was young—mid-forties—with a buzzcut and earnest eyes and the straightforward manner of a man who'd gone into law enforcement because he genuinely believed in protecting people. "You think Blackwell sent this?"

"I think someone connected to him did. Or someone connected to the broader interests that don't want the Sullivan story published."

Jim leaned back in his chair and studied her. "I've heard about the investigation. The wartime rescue operation, the coded letters. It's been the talk of the town."

"Then you know there's a connection to your predecessor."

"Harold Blackwell." Jim's expression didn't change, but something behind it shifted—a stiffening, as if the name carried a physical weight. "Maya, I'm going to be honest with you. When I took this job, the old-timers told me stories about Harold. Not specifics—more like warnings. 'Don't dig into the Blackwell years,' they said. 'Some ground is better left undisturbed.'"

"Did you listen?"

"I didn't have a reason to dig. Until now." He set the evidence bag down. "I'll investigate the letter. Dust for prints, check the security cameras on Maple Lane—the Hendersons have a doorbell camera that might have caught something. And I'll have a conversation with Richard Blackwell."

"Thank you."

"Maya." He caught her eye as she stood to leave. "If there's more—more letters, more threats, anything that makes you feel unsafe—call me directly. Day or night. I'm not Harold Blackwell. This office doesn't intimidate people. It protects them."

She left the sheriff's station feeling marginally better and walked to the bakery, because Hannah's croissants had become her stress-management technique of choice.

"Is my stress that predictable?"

Maya told her about the letter. Hannah's face went through the same progression Maya's had: surprise, anger, a settling determination.

"The Blackwells have been the quiet kings of this town for generations," Hannah said. "Not overtly—they don't run for office or sit on councils. They just own things. Property, businesses, influence. Richard isn't his grandfather, but he has the same entitlement—the assumption that Willow Creek is his family's territory."

"Has he ever done anything like this before? Threats?"

"Not that I know of. But when Marco and I were trying to buy the bakery space, the landlord told us he'd had 'conversations' with a development group about converting Main Street retail into tourist accommodations. We had to pay above market to close the deal."

"Pacific Northwest Development?"

"The name was never mentioned. But the timing was suspicious." Hannah sipped her coffee. "Maya, the Blackwells aren't monsters. They're just... used to getting what they want. And you're standing between Richard and what he wants."

"A house with wartime secrets in the walls."

"A house worth millions to a developer and worth more than money to you." Hannah reached across the table. "Be smart about this. Use the legal protections Catherine's team set up. Don't go anywhere alone at night. And for God's sake, tell Eli everything—he gets dangerously broody when he thinks you're keeping things from him."

"Dangerously broody?"

"He stress-grooms the horses. It takes weeks to get them back to normal."

The investigation continued despite the threat. If anything, the letter galvanized the team.

Sam accelerated the publication timeline, moving the embargo up by three days. Dana Washington filed preliminary stories that hinted at the coming revelation without naming names—"Major WWII Rescue Operation Discovered in Oregon," read the *Oregonian* headline, accompanied by a photograph of the Victorian that made it look both beautiful and mysterious.

The response was immediate. Sam's university inbox filled with media inquiries. Dr. Stein's phone rang constantly with calls from museums and archives around the world. Catherine's law firm fielded six interview requests before noon.

And Maya—Maya found herself at the center of a storm she hadn't anticipated. The discovery of the Sullivan operation was already being hailed as one of the most significant finds in Pacific Northwest history, and the full story hadn't even been published yet.

"You're famous," Eli said, watching her scroll through emails at 11 p.m.

"I'm overwhelmed."

"Same thing, in Willow Creek." He closed her laptop gently but firmly. "You need to sleep."

"I need to respond to these—"

"They'll be there in the morning. You, however, will not be functional in the morning if you don't sleep now." He steered her toward the stairs. "Come on. I'll read to you."

"You'll what?"

"I'll read to you. It's what Rose used to do for the children when they couldn't sleep. Miriam told me." He picked up the volume of Whitman from the side table—the same copy James and Rose had used for their code. "Seems appropriate."

Maya let herself be led upstairs, let herself be tucked into bed, let Eli's voice wash over her as he read Section 14 of "Song of Myself"—the section Rose had marked with a pressed white rose.

*"The wild gander leads his flock through the cool night,*

*Ya-honk he says, and sounds it down to me like an invitation,*

*The pert may suppose it meaningless, but I listening close,*

His voice was low and steady, and the words were old and beautiful, and the house creaked around them with the sounds of settling and memory, and Maya fell asleep between one line and the next, carried into darkness by the same words that had once carried messages of hope across an ocean.

In the morning, she found another letter.

Not on the floor this time—taped to the Victorian's front door, in plain view, as if whoever had left it wanted the whole street to see.

Same stationery. Same handwriting. Shorter this time.

*Last warning.*

Maya photographed it, called the sheriff, and then called Dana Washington.

"Publish early," she said. "Publish now."

"We're three days ahead of schedule—"

"Someone is threatening me, and the longer we wait, the more time they have to bury the story. Publish now."

"Give me twenty-four hours."

"You have twelve."

Maya hung up and stood on the porch of the Victorian, looking out at the quiet street where someone had come in the night with warnings and threats. The morning sun was rising over the mountains, painting the world in gold, and the air was cold enough to see her breath.

She thought about Rose. About the night Harold Blackwell had come to this very door and threatened to burn the house with the children inside. About the eighteen-year-old girl who had stood between him and the people she loved and had not flinched.

"Your turn," Maya whispered to the house. "One more secret. One more stand."

The Victorian creaked in response—a deep, resonant sound, like a bell tolling.
