Baby Rose took her first steps on Christmas Eve.

She was five months old, which—as Eli noted with professional precision—was far too early for walking. "Babies don't walk at five months. The developmental milestones are clear. Sitting at six months, crawling at eight, walking at twelve."

"Tell that to your daughter," Maya said, watching Rose toddle two steps from the coffee table to the couch before collapsing with the satisfied expression of a mountaineer summiting Everest.

"She's not walking. She's falling forward with her feet underneath her."

"That's what walking is."

"Walking involves balance and—she did it again."

Three steps this time. Rose looked at both of them with the fierce, determined gaze she'd inherited from every woman in her lineage and took a fourth step before sitting down hard on the rug.

"She's a prodigy," Hannah declared, arriving for the Christmas Eve gathering with the twins, Marco, and enough pastries to induce a sugar coma in the entire town. "An infant prodigy. I'm calling Mrs. Patterson."

"Please don't call Mrs. Patterson."

"Too late. I've been texting her a play-by-play for the last hour."

The Christmas Eve gathering at the Victorian had become, in its second year, an institution. Not by design—Maya hadn't sent invitations or planned a menu—but by the gravitational pull of a house that drew people into its warmth the way a hearth draws cold hands.

They came: Hannah and Marco and the twins. Mrs. Kovac with her glass star. Mrs. Patterson with her flowers. George Hendricks with a wooden toy he'd carved for Rose—a horse, naturally, at Eli's request. Sheriff Jim Kowalski, now a friend rather than an official, bringing his partner, David, and a bottle of wine from a Willamette Valley vineyard. Sam, who'd moved permanently to Willow Creek and was renting a cottage on Main Street while writing his second book. Sophia Torres, now officially Maya's intern, wearing a Chen Architecture sweatshirt she'd designed herself.

And Clara, who'd flown in from Buenos Aires for the holidays and who held baby Rose with the particular tenderness of a woman recognizing herself in a new generation.

"She has James's eyes," Clara said. "My father's eyes. Brown, not blue—she has her father's color—but the shape. The intensity."

"She has your stubbornness too," Eli said. "She's been walking for three hours and she won't stop."

"Walking? At five months?"

"Falling forward with purpose," Maya corrected.

The evening unfolded with the warm, chaotic energy of a gathering that has outgrown its original design—too many people for the dining room table, too many dishes for the kitchen counter, too many conversations happening simultaneously for any single one to be fully followed. The twins (Hannah's) had befriended baby Rose and were now trying to teach her to clap, which she responded to by grabbing their fingers and attempting to eat them.

Mrs. Kovac held court in the armchair, telling stories from the library's collection of local history—stories that now included the Sullivan Operation, which had become the most requested topic in Willow Creek's modest archives. George Hendricks and Tom Bergstrom were engaged in their eternal debate about wood grain, which Maya suspected would continue after both of them were dead, conducted from adjoining graves.

And at some point in the evening—Maya couldn't pinpoint when—the gathering shifted from celebration to something quieter. The conversations softened. The laughter gentled. People found their seats and their glasses and the particular stillness that comes when a group of humans recognizes, simultaneously, that they are experiencing something worth noticing.

Maya stood by the fireplace and looked around the room—at the faces she'd come to know and love, at the house that held them all, at the tree with Mrs. Kovac's glass star catching the light—and felt the echo.

Not the echo of the past—of Rose and James, of the children and the basement, of the war and the silence and the sixty years of waiting. That echo was always there, woven into the walls of the Victorian like another layer of paint.

This was a new echo. The echo of the present, reverberating into the future. The sound of a life being lived, a community being built, a family being formed from the raw materials of courage and stubbornness and the particular alchemy of people who choose each other.

"Speech," Hannah called, because apparently this was also now a tradition.

"No speech," Maya said.

"House rules."

"You made up those rules last year."

"They've had a year to become established. Speech."

Maya sighed. She set down her wine glass and stood by the tree.

"Last year, I said Rose left me a home. And a history. And all of you." She looked at the faces—old and new, familiar and still-being-learned. "This year, I want to say something else."

She found Eli's eyes. He was holding baby Rose, who'd fallen asleep against his chest, her tiny fist curled around his collar.

"This year, I understand what Rose really left me. Not a house or a history or a community—though she left me all of those things. She left me a question."

She paused.

"'Because someone should.' That's what Rose said when Sarah asked why she was sheltering the children. It's carved on her memorial stone. It's become a kind of mantra—the distilled version of the Sullivan Operation's moral philosophy."

She looked at the tree, at the glass star.

"But it's not a statement. It's a question. *Because someone should*—but who? Who is the someone? Who decides that they're the one who's going to stand between the vulnerable and the world that's trying to hurt them?"

She looked at each face in turn.

"The answer is: whoever happens to be there. Rose was there, in that alley, when David was crying. Patrick was there, in Willow Creek, with the skills to build a safe house. Margaret was there, with the connections to maintain the network. And James was there, with the courage to cross an ocean for children he'd never met."

She raised her glass.

"To being there. To showing up. To being the someone who should. Not because we're special or brave or better than anyone else. But because we're here, and the need is here, and sometimes that's all it takes."

They drank. They held the silence for a moment—the particular silence of shared recognition—and then the evening resumed its warm, chaotic course, and the fire burned, and the baby slept, and the house held them all like cupped hands.

Outside, snow was falling again—the second Christmas of white, the second winter of warmth. The oak tree wore its winter bones. The memorial stones slept under a blanket of white. The garden waited for spring.

And inside the Victorian, the evening kept going—old and new together, past and present in the same room, love doing its quiet, ordinary work through walls and years.
