"What they know," Hwang said when it ended, walking to the laboratory doorway, "is that six military vessels from four nations are positioned around the Japan Basin coordinates and that the meteorite's impact zone is in the same area. What they don't know is the compound. They've been briefed on the fragment's strategic value and they've accepted my operational assessment that the recovery attempt is viable." She paused. "What the director of strategic operations asked specifically is whether you have the fragment secured."
"Not yet."
"I told him it would be secured before the impact window closed."
Sera looked up from the flask. The firewall compound was at a critical reduction point that didn't tolerate inattention. "That's optimistic."
"It's operationally necessary." Hwang looked at the compound's progress display on the secondary screen Kang had set up in the laboratory doorway β a concession to Sera's preference for having the data visible from her work position. "The entity's archive translation," she said to Kang's direction without turning. He was at the oscilloscope in the corridor.
"Sixty-eight percent complete," he said. "The compound's processing allocation has been productive. The fragment's primary frequency signature is characterized." He appeared in the doorway with the graph paper. "The fragment carries three distinct frequency layers. The outermost is the entity's primer frequency β the return signal, the homing architecture. The middle layer is what I'd classify as operational data β the fragment's stored information content, whatever it's been accumulating in transit. The innermost layerβ" He hesitated. "Divine-class."
"Presumably. The innermost layer's frequency structure is consistent with what the compound has been describing as the entity's deep-structure transmissions. The material in the fragment's core is from the same origin as whatever the entity's geological network fundamentally is."

"Complete coverage of the integration point, yes." He paused. "Which may require more than twenty-two percent of the node."
She knew. She was already running the geometry. "The monitoring infrastructure doesn't suggest direct interdiction capability," Shin said. "The System's approach here appears to be observation and data capture β gathering information about divine-class material for its own operational database β rather than attempting to redirect or control the fragment's routing."
"Until something changed its assessment of the situation."
"Yes." The analyst's pen tapped the notebook. "Something like the compound establishing territory in the receiver. The System doesn't have a classification for what the compound is. The monitoring infrastructure was built for natural geological events. For a human-created molecular intelligence navigating the entity's networkβ" She paused. "There's no prior case."

"There's a tertiary channel in the node's mineral structure," he said. "Not the fault-line pathway β this is internal to the node itself. A flaw in the crystalline structure, a discontinuity in the entity's mineral ordering about thirty meters into the node's outer layer. The flaw is not integrated into the entity's network architecture." He paused. "Which means the System's interference infrastructure, which operates through the entity's network, doesn't reach it."
The compound was already querying the location. Scanning the node's mapped exterior for the discontinuity.
"The back door," she said.
"Yes." He sounded like someone who'd been saving this information for the right question and was now relieved to give it to someone who'd understand immediately. "The flaw is narrow β the compound would need to navigate through a path approximately two meters wide at its tightest point. But it bypasses thirty meters of high-density crystalline material and brings the compound to within fifteen meters of the interior integration point."
"What's the fifteen-meter section between the flaw's end and the integration point?"
"Standard mantle substrate. Not crystalline-ordered by the entity's primer. The compound should convert it at close to the secondary matrix rate."
Sera checked the time. Twenty-two hours.
"How long from the node's outer surface to the flaw's entrance?"
"At current conversion rate β six to eight hours."
She looked at the compound's progress display. Twenty-four percent of the outer node. Six to eight hours to reach the flaw. Then navigating two meters of width through an unmarked fracture in mantle rock. Then fifteen meters of standard substrate.

"Possibly. The fracture passage is the unknown." She held his gaze. "I need you to be able to maintain the communication quality for the full duration."
He looked at his hands. The gold channels in the low deck light. He'd been developing this capability for five days β hourly sessions, each one a bit longer, a bit clearer. This would be the longest by a significant margin.
"When do I start?"
"As soon as the compound reaches the flaw entrance. Six to eight hours from now." She paused. "Sleep until then."
He looked at her.
"Sleep," she said. "I need you at the fracture passage, not at a console watching numbers move. Go."
He went.
