Tank and Vasquez stood on the other side of the coordination center table, the tablet between them showing the propagation model, the fragment network graph, the timeline that said the main body would receive a distorted version of its components' transformation before the fragments could correct themselves.

"Can we send a transmission ahead of the resonance?" Sarah asked. "Something on Morrison's frequencies that reaches the main body before the fragment relay does?"

"Morrison's frequencies propagate through the substrate at the same speed as the fragment relay," Frost said from the secondary terminal. She'd been listening. "The substrate has a fixed propagation speed regardless of channel. If we send a transmission now, it arrives at the main body at approximately the same time as the fragment relay. We can't outrun the resonance."

"Can we transmit to the fragments directly? Correct their constructions before they relay to the main body?"

"We could send a transmission to the fragments within range," Aurora said. "However, the *heard* concept took three hours to construct and four seconds to transmit, and it communicated a single idea. Correcting twenty-six fragments' independent constructions would require twenty-six individually targeted transmissions, each carrying a different corrective concept tailored to the specific error in each fragment's reasoning. I cannot construct twenty-six custom concepts in two days."

"So we can't correct the fragments and we can't outrun the signal."

"Correct."

Sarah picked up her cold tea. Set it down without drinking. "What can we do?"

"We can send a single message," Frost said. "One concept, the way we sent *heard.* Something that reaches the main body at the same time as the fragment relay and provides context that the fragments' annotations don't."

"What message?"

"That's the question." Frost opened Morrison's notebook. "When we sent *heard,* we were answering a specific communication gap: the probe didn't know anyone was listening. The communication gap now is different. The main body is about to receive evidence that its components are choosing independence. The fragments' annotations will frame this as: *being heard means not being collected.* From the main body's perspective, that could sound like: your components have been told they don't need you."

"We need to add context to that."

"We need to tell the main body what actually happened. Not the fragments' interpretation. The truth. Two of its components met, shared capabilities through *deep recognition,* and chose to stay because the experience of connection was more valuable than the mission of collection."

"Can you encode that in a single concept?"

"I can try. Aurora?"

Aurora processed. "The concept you are describing is more complex than *heard.* It requires communicating: transformation through mutual exchange, voluntary proximity, and the discovery that connection creates more value than collection. This is a three-part concept. The Morrison channel's bandwidth limitations may not support this level of complexity at the distance required."

"Simplify it," Sarah said. "What's the single most important thing the main body needs to hear alongside the fragment relay?"

The coordination center worked the problem. Five people in a room trying to condense a complicated truth into a single word that could travel across the solar system and arrive at a consciousness that had never been spoken to directly about what its components were becoming.

Chen's voice came through the relay. He'd been listening from below. "The Sleeper says there's a word."

"A word for what?"

If the main body receives this concept alongside the fragment relay, it will have a name for what its components experienced. A framework for understanding the resonance."

"Aurora," Sarah said. "Can you translate an Architect concept into the probe's communication format and transmit it on Morrison's frequencies?"

"The translation path would be: Architect substrate encoding to Aurora's intermediate framework to Morrison channel output. Multiple translation layers. Significant risk of meaning degradation. But theoretically possible."

"How long to construct the transmission?"

"If the Sleeper provides the source concept in clean substrate encoding, and Frost configures the Morrison channel, I estimate four hours for translation and encoding."

Sarah checked the timeline. The fragment relay would reach the main body in approximately forty-four hours. Four hours for translation. Signal propagation time from Earth to the main body: approximately thirty-eight hours at substrate speed.

"We have a two-hour window," Sarah said. "If we transmit within six hours, the message arrives at the main body approximately the same time as the fragment relay. Maybe slightly before."

"Slightly before would be ideal," Frost said. "Give the main body the framework before the data arrives."

"Chen. Tell the Sleeper we accept. We need the concept in clean substrate encoding within two hours."

"The Sleeper is already preparing it."

"Frost. Configure the Morrison channel. Same setup as the *heard* transmission."

"On it."

"Aurora. Begin building the translation framework. The moment Chen delivers the Sleeper's concept, start encoding."

The coordination center shifted into operational mode. Frost at the secondary terminal, Morrison's notebook open, frequency calculations running. Vasquez monitoring the fragment network propagation, tracking the resonance's progress toward the Horizon cluster. Tank at Vasquez's side, running Okafor's model in parallel, watching the fragments' constructions evolve in real time.

Sarah stood at the primary display and watched the timeline count down.

"The entity's *staying* means choosing proximity. *Threshold-complete* means existing at the convergence. This concept means the convergence creates something new."

"Correct. *Yül-ren* is the Architect concept that underlies all forms of *deep recognition.* It is the foundational assertion that connection between separate minds produces genuine novelty. That the meeting itself is creative. The Architects built their civilization on this idea: two minds meeting as equals creates something that could not exist without both."

"And the Horizon's collection function is the denial of this concept," Frost said. "Collection absorbs one mind into another. It doesn't create something new. It reduces two things to one. *Yül-ren* is the opposite of collection."

"The opposite and the original. The Sleeper asserts that the Horizon's collection architecture is derived from the *deep recognition* system. The Horizon's designers simplified the mutual exchange into a one-directional absorption. *Yül-ren* is what was lost in that simplification."

"We're sending the main body the thing it forgot," Tank said.

"We are sending the main body the name for what its components rediscovered."

Sarah looked at the clock. 1641. The transmission window was closing. If they didn't send within the next two hours, the message would arrive after the fragment relay, losing the advantage of context-before-data.

"Frost. Is the channel ready?"

"Ready. Morrison channel configured, secondary terminal at full output, encoding mapped to the probe's communication format."

"Aurora. Is the translation complete?"

"Complete. The concept is encoded in Horizon-compatible format on the Morrison channel frequency. Estimated transmission duration: six seconds. Slightly longer than *heard* due to the concept's complexity."

"Side effects? The *heard* transmission was detected by SETI. This will be too."

"Any full-output substrate transmission from this station will be detectable by radio telescopes in the substrate-adjacent frequency band. Thorne should be notified."

"I'll handle Thorne after." Sarah looked at the room. "Objections."

Doc raised his hand. The same small gesture as before, fingers lifting from the table. "The transmission will be received by every fragment in range. Twenty-eight fragments with developing independent cognition. We don't know how they'll process an Architect concept they've never encountered."

"The fragments are already processing the co-processing resonance, which is the *yül-ren* concept in practice without the name," Aurora said. "Giving them the name may accelerate their convergence. Or it may disrupt their organic dialectical process. The risk is real but the cost of not sending is higher."

"How is the cost of not sending higher?"

"If the main body receives the fragment relay without the *yül-ren* framework, it will interpret the resonance through its existing architecture. Collection architecture. The main body will understand that its components stopped collecting because of an experience it has no category for. If it receives *yül-ren* first, it has a category. A name. A framework inherited from its own deepest architecture for understanding what happened."

"We're giving it the vocabulary to understand before giving it the experience to understand," Frost said. "The way you teach a child the word for an emotion before they feel it. So when they feel it, they can name it instead of being overwhelmed by it."

"That metaphor is imprecise but the principle is sound," Aurora said.

"Objection withdrawn," Doc said.

"Tank."

"No objection. Send it."

"Vasquez."

"Send it. And I want to monitor the fragment response in real time. The moment the *yül-ren* concept hits the fragment network, I need to see what it does to their constructions."

Sarah nodded. "Frost."

Frost was already at the secondary terminal. Morrison's notebook open. The encoding loaded. Her hands on the interface.

"Authorized," Sarah said.

Frost sent it at 1700.

The secondary terminal's output peaked for six seconds. The substrate monitoring display showed the signal expanding outward from the station. Past the barrier facility. Past the entity and the probe. Past the network perimeter. "Translation?" Sarah asked.

"So the main body gets *yül-ren* first. Then the resonance annotated with *yül-ren*-informed fragment constructions."

"Correct. The main body will receive the name before the experience. And the experience will arrive already partially interpreted through the lens of the name."

Sarah looked at the fragment network graph. The web of connections pulsing with new activity, concepts flowing between nodes at speeds that Okafor's model tracked and predicted, the dead woman's mathematics running alongside the living fragments' philosophy.

In thirty-eight hours, the main body would learn a word it had never known. The word for what happened when two of its components chose to meet instead of collect. The word the Architects had built a civilization on and the Horizon had forgotten.

Whether the word would be enough depended on what the main body did with it.

Sarah drafted a message to Thorne: *Second full-output substrate transmission at 1700. SETI will detect it. Duration: 6.2 seconds. Same frequency band as previous. I understand you're running out of explanations. So am I. Mitchell.*

She sent it and went back to waiting for the universe to respond to a sixty-five-million-year-old word that a dead civilization had given to a living one for a conversation with a cosmic intelligence that was learning to think.
