The Iron Heaven Sect elder was waiting on the road at the mountain's second switchback.

Not ambushing β€” standing, in the center of the path, in a way that said: I am an authority figure and I intend to be seen. Behind him stood six disciples in iron-blue training robes, arranged in a loose defensive formation that was either habitual or rehearsed. Spirit River Stage Seven for the elder, Wen Zhao assessed through the Eye without breaking stride. Foundation Building Four through Six for the disciples. The elder had a communication token in his right hand, not a weapon, which was either a courtesy or a calculation.

Yan Qinghe, walking on Wen Zhao's left, stopped.

Wen Zhao did not stop.

"The Azure Void Sect Patriarch," the elder said. His voice had the carrying quality of authority long practiced. "I am Elder Qian of the Iron Heaven Sect's Discipline Hall. I've been sent toβ€”"

Wen Zhao walked past him.

Not around him β€” there was enough room on the right side of the path. He walked through the available space, close enough that Elder Qian had to take a half-step back or be shouldered aside. He took the half-step.

"β€”to discuss the incident at the judgment courtyard," Elder Qian finished, to Wen Zhao's back.

"Yan Qinghe," Wen Zhao said, without turning, "are you coming?"

A brief pause. Then footsteps behind him. Yan Qinghe had caught up within three steps.

"That's it?" Yan Qinghe said, quietly.

"What would you like me to add?"

A longer pause.

"He's Spirit River Stage Seven," Yan Qinghe said.

"Yes."

"That's higher than any cultivation I've encountered."

"Stage Seven is above average for a regional sect elder," Wen Zhao agreed. "Not high relative to the broader world. Reasonably capable for most situations on this road."

Yan Qinghe glanced back. Elder Qian had not followed. He was standing where Wen Zhao had walked past him, communicating something into the token in his hand.

"He's not pursuing," Yan Qinghe said.

"No," Wen Zhao said. "He couldn't read my cultivation when he probed. That causes a specific kind of hesitation in people trained to assess threats before engaging them."

"What did he get when he probed?"

"Nothing. The Eye of Insight on him, when he attempted the probe, showed me what he saw: a blank space where a cultivation reading should be. Not the blank of someone without cultivation β€” a different kind of blank. The kind that makes a Spirit River Stage Seven elder decide that whatever message he was sent to deliver isn't worth testing the unknown."

Yan Qinghe walked in silence for a while.

"You didn't say anything to him," he said.

"He didn't ask me anything," Wen Zhao said. "He announced his purpose. His purpose was to discuss the incident. I didn't want to discuss the incident."

"So you just walked past."

"The road goes south. We're going south."

They walked.

---

The tablet updated two hours past the encounter. Wen Zhao read it on the road while eating dried fruit from his pack.

*Xu Meilin situation update: the formal signing ceremony for Iron Heaven Sect discipleship has been moved from three days to tomorrow morning. The trigger appears to be communication between Elder Qian and the Iron Heaven Sect's main compound regarding your departure south. Someone connected your direction of travel with Xu Meilin's location.*

*Current status: Xu Meilin has agreed to attend the ceremony under family pressure. She has not confirmed willingness. The Shen Noble Family estate's formation analysis suggests she spent three hours last night in the secondary library rather than in the ceremony preparation room where she was expected.*

*The signing window is approximately sixteen hours.*

He did the arithmetic. Sixteen hours at their current pace was about right for the Shen family estate's distance. Possibly less if they moved faster.

He looked at the road ahead, then at Yan Qinghe, who was reading the dossier Wen Zhao had handed him twenty minutes ago.

"What's the Reincarnation Jade Bone?" Yan Qinghe said, without looking up.

"Past-life spiritual memory," Wen Zhao said. "The Jade Bone carries traces of previous cultivation cycles across multiple lifetimes. The person with the physique sometimes has access to those memories β€” knowledge, technique, occasionally premonitions that aren't premonitions so much as recognitions of things they've encountered before."

"That sounds complicated."

"It is. The dossier notes that her past-life memories surface involuntarily during cultivation, which complicates standard technique training and apparently creates a significant assessment challenge for sects that want to evaluate her actual baseline rather than her accumulated past-life echoes."

"So Iron Heaven Sect can't accurately assess her."

"Correct. Which partly explains why they're pushing the signing ceremony before a proper assessment. They know she's a ten-star talent from her talent pillar reading. They don't know what else the Jade Bone brings."

Yan Qinghe was quiet for a moment.

"What does it bring?"

Wen Zhao thought about the dossier's technical section. "I haven't fully read the relevant texts yet. The library's three texts on ancient physiques β€” the ones I mentioned earlier β€” include one on the Jade Bone. What I know from the dossier is that the full Reincarnation Jade Bone, cultivated properly through multiple realms, eventually creates something the records call Eternal Cultivation: each lifetime's progress compounding on the previous, the soul becoming a kind of archive. In theory, a person with the Jade Bone who has cultivated across enough lifetimes could reach the equivalent of hundred-year cultivation without hundred years of practice."

Yan Qinghe set the dossier down.

"That's absurd," he said.

"Most of the physiques in the sect's recruitment list are absurd," Wen Zhao said. "That's what ten stars means. Not 'exceptional for the region.' Exceptional relative to the entire history of recorded cultivation."

They picked up their pace.

---

They reached the Shen family territory before midnight.

The estate was visible from the road's high point as a cluster of lights in the valley below β€” a large compound, walled, with several subsidiary structures visible outside the main walls. Wealthy in the specific way of old money: not ostentatious, but very dense, the kind of wealth that had had generations to settle into architecture and become indistinguishable from the ground it sat on.

Through the Eye, the compound's cultivators: three Spirit River seniors, a dozen Foundation Building staff, and the Iron Heaven Sect delegation in the guest pavilions on the compound's east side. Elder Qian's communication had apparently outrun them β€” the delegation had doubled in size since the dossier's last update. Two Spirit River elders now, plus ten disciples.

And in the secondary library, a single person still awake at the midnight hour, a cultivation signature that the Eye categorized before Wen Zhao consciously asked it to.

Reincarnation Jade Bone. Close to Foundation Building Stage Nine. The past-life echoes in the signature visible as layers, the way geological strata were visible in a cliff face β€” distinct periods, distinct cultivation styles, nine distinct previous cycles compressed into the current one.

She'd been in that library for six hours.

"The second library," Yan Qinghe said. He'd been watching through his own ordinary perception. "There's a light."

"Yes," Wen Zhao said.

"That's her?"

"Based on the Eye's reading. Yes."

They stood on the road's high point and looked at the estate below.

"What's she doing in the library at midnight?" Yan Qinghe said.

"Looking for something," Wen Zhao said. "She's had the pattern for multiple lifetimes β€” searching through available records for something she can't fully name. The dossier mentioned this. One of her past-life memories is of a specific teaching she received, the name and face worn away by the lifetimes between, but the content partly intact. She keeps searching for the source."

Yan Qinghe was quiet.

"She's not going to find it in the Shen family's estate library," Wen Zhao said. "The relevant records are in the Azure Void Sect's inner study. I haven't identified them specifically yet, but the pattern the dossier describes matches what I've seen in the sealed crates."

"She's been looking for Azure Void Sect," Yan Qinghe said.

"Possibly," Wen Zhao said. "In the way that someone searching for a specific word searches through a book without knowing it's in there. Not knowing what she's looking for, just knowing she's been looking for it for several lifetimes."

They looked at the light in the secondary library for a while.

"We find an inn," Wen Zhao said, "get a few hours of sleep, and arrive at the estate at morning. The ceremony is at dawn. We need to be there before it starts."

They walked down toward the estate's nearest village.

Behind them on the high road, the Iron Heaven Sect's second communication token activated in the guest pavilion below. Elder Qian's report had arrived.

Wen Zhao noted the timing. Eight hours until dawn.

He went to sleep.
