Tiangu's first task in the valley was an audit of the founding array's current state.
He spent three days on it, moving through the formation network's architecture with the methodical attention of someone examining their own work after a four-hundred-year absence and finding it mostly intact with several interesting developments they hadn't anticipated. Xu Lianhua shadowed him through the entire process, which he did not object to, and took notes on everything he said and several things he didn't say. By the end of the three days she had a complete notation of the array's current condition alongside the founding specifications and the deviations between them, most of which were positive.
"The Five Harmony Root's integration is ahead of the original design's expected timeline," he told Wen Zhao, at the end of the audit. "The cleared-space architecture in the Reincarnation Jade Bone physique is further along than I calculated. The ancient blade body's activation at the native level this week activated a latent connection point in the array I'd built but not expected to see operational until much later." He looked at his notes. "The founding array's current state is approximately forty years ahead of the projection."
"Which affects the seal's strength," Wen Zhao said.
"Positively. The distributed anchor structure is more robust than it would have been if the timeline had proceeded as I originally expected." He paused. "The Innate Spirit Body's fire-earth integration is producing a cross-element stabilization effect I didn't design for. That's the most interesting deviation. It may be more important than I know yet."
Wen Zhao looked at the array analysis document. "What does it need."
"The remaining anchor points," Tiangu said. "You have five of the ten physiques. The other five are out in the world. As you recruit them, the structure will strengthen. The rate of strengthening is not linear β the last two or three physiques will activate the full structure in ways the current partial configuration doesn't predict." He paused. "It will be different when the structure is complete. I am not able to describe exactly how."
"You built it but you don't know what it does at full capacity."
"I designed it based on the theoretical requirements for the seal's distributed anchor structure," Tiangu said. "The full structure has never been instantiated. I have the theory. The practice will be β new." He paused. "This is the part I've been waiting ten thousand years to find out."
The dry anticipation in his voice was, Wen Zhao noted, similar to how Xu Lianhua sounded when she'd been following a research thread for three months and was approaching the result. It was probably a practitioner quality that preserved well.

Bei Yufeng's first cultivation session in the valley produced a result that required consultation.
Not a crisis β the result was positive, which was part of what made it require consultation. The residual celestial aura's response to the founding array's elemental environment had accelerated the aura's integration rate beyond the chaos sacred water's standard management protocol. In the zone, the chaos sacred water had been the primary suppressor, keeping the aura accumulation below the tolerance threshold. In the valley, the founding array's clean qi distribution was doing something different: it wasn't suppressing the accumulated aura. It was processing it.
She came to Tiangu after the first session.
"The residual celestial aura," she said. "The accumulated aura from the zone β the founding array isn't suppressing it."
"No," Tiangu said. "The array is using it."
She looked at him.
"The celestial origin physique in its full form carries original heaven energy," Tiangu said. "The residual in your body is a fragment of that. The founding array's architecture includes a channel for original heaven energy input β it was built for the full physique, but the residual is compatible." He paused. "The aura you accumulated in the zone is being processed by the array's original heaven energy channel and converted into formation input."
She looked at her cultivation state.
"The seven months in the zone," she said slowly. "The accumulation I was managing."
"Was original heaven energy in a corrupted environment," Tiangu said. "The zone's cursed aura has an older component β the Ancient Divine Vein predates the Stolen Heaven event. The corruption it carries is different from the standard cursed aura's structure." He paused. "You were absorbing the zone's original-layer energy alongside the corruption, and the celestial residual's compatibility allowed you to carry it without the corruption's full effect." He looked at her left forearm. "What you've been managing for seven months is not a liability. It's a resource. The array knows what to do with it."
Bei Yufeng was quiet for a long time.
Then she said: "The Sacred Ground knew."
"I would expect so," Tiangu said. "The original heaven energy's value is significant. The zone assignments were not just to use your celestial aura tolerance for their extraction work." He paused. "They were accumulating original heaven energy in you as a carrying vessel."
"And then they were going to retrieve me when the accumulation was high enough," she said.
"I believe so."
She looked at the cultivation hall's wall. Something moved through her expression β not quite anger, not quite the cold assessment she usually wore. The specific quality of a thing that had been done to her being named. "The bone was taken," she said. "The bone-holder was used for leverage over the Beichen Clan. And I was sent into the zone to accumulate energy they were going to take back." A pause. "I was never not useful to them. I was just always useful in different ways."
Tiangu said nothing.
"The Patriarch," she said. "He knows."
"He knows now," Tiangu said. "I told him this morning."
She turned and went to find Wen Zhao.
She found him at the study table. He looked up when she came in, noted her expression, and put down the pen.
"Tiangu told me," he said.
"I know." She sat. She didn't say anything for a moment. When she did, it was precise: "The Sacred Ground's claim is not just contractual obligations. It's an active resource extraction operation." She paused. "You knew this before I told you."
"I suspected it when I read the inquiry language," he said. "The 'contractual obligations' framing was specifically designed to give them a legal basis for retrieval that didn't describe what they were actually retrieving."
"The original heaven energy."
"Yes."
She looked at the study table. "That changes what the conflict with the Sacred Ground is about," she said.
"It changes the explanation for what they want," he said. "It doesn't change what we do about it. The documentation challenge still applies. The factual record still matters." He paused. "It does mean we need Tiangu's assessment of what the original heaven energy's current state in your cultivation system looks like, and what the array's processing is producing."
"When will he have that."
"He's running the analysis now. He'll have it by the evening session."
She looked at him. "You're not concerned."
"I'm calibrating," he said.
She looked at him for one more moment. Then she nodded β not the provisional agreement nod, the settled kind. She picked up her notation for the cultivation session analysis and left.

The intelligence arrived from Shen Changtian's network on the seventh day since the Patriarch's return.
It came as a priority relay β the coding that Shen Changtian used for information that changed the timeline rather than confirming it. Wen Zhao was at the cultivation pond when it arrived. He read it and went directly to the main hall.
The household assembled within five minutes.
"The three-sect coalition has begun its advance," he said. "Not the vanguard β the full force. All forces at Cliffwatch Pass are moving west." He set the intelligence summary on the table. "The central authority's procedural review concluded this morning. The conclusion: the emergency powers invocation was procedurally appropriate but factually insufficient. The coalition's force authorization has been downgraded to a standard engagement authorization, which has different conditions."
"Standard engagement authorization requires them to demonstrate active threat before escalating," Shen Moran said, immediately. She had the authority procedure documentation open. "They can't authorize force against a non-hostile target without documented provocation."
"Yes," he said. "The coalition's interpretation of *non-hostile* and ours may differ." He looked at the table. "They're coming anyway."
"The timeline," Pei Changyun said.
"Four days at the current pace. Possibly three if they push." He looked at the intelligence. "The force composition: eight warships, six Domain King-level commanders, andβ" He paused. "The regional commander is not from the three sects."
"Who," Yan Qinghe said.
"The Wuyuan Sacred Ground," Wen Zhao said. "They've seconded a commander to the coalition's force. Saint-level practitioner." He looked at the table. "The Sacred Ground is not technically part of the coalition's filing. They're providing command assistance."
"So they can benefit from the engagement's outcome without their name on the authorization." Luo Tianxin looked at the table. "That's a clean arrangement for them."
"Yes," he said.
Bei Yufeng had been very still since the name Wuyuan Sacred Ground had come up. She hadn't moved. She was running the assessment β adding this to her file on the Sacred Ground's behavior patterns, the original heaven energy extraction, the zone assignments. The commander secondment was a new data point. She was placing it.
"Four days," she said.
"Three to four," he said.
"The valley's defensive formation," she said. "With the founding array at current capacity and a ten-thousand-year-old Earth Emperor who built the arrayβ"
"The coalition has eight warships," Pei Changyun said, with the tone she used when she was correcting inadequate threat assessment. "And a Saint-level Sacred Ground commander." She paused. "We have three Earth Emperors, one ten-thousand-year-old practitioner who built the foundations this valley stands on, and four disciples who have been training in conditions that even I am revising my estimates about." She looked around the table. "This is not a threat I'm concerned about."
"You've been looking forward to this," Luo Tianxin said.
"I've been prepared for it," Pei Changyun said. The distinction, her tone implied, was meaningful.
Wen Zhao looked at the table. The household β ten people plus Tiangu, who was not technically a sect member but was also not technically not one, occupying a category Shen Moran was still working out the administrative notation for β absorbed the intelligence in their various ways.
"Four days," he said. "Use the preparation time the same way you've been using every other preparation time." He looked at each of them. "Cultivate."
He picked up the intelligence summary.
"Shen Moran," he said, "prepare formal notification to the regional authority that the coalition's forces are advancing and that we are registering their approach on the monitoring formation's record. I want the documentation current."
"I've been drafting it since the relay arrived," she said.
He went back to the pond.
---
The afternoon session was the most productive in the valley's recent history.
Pei Changyun noted this in the monitoring log without comment, which was her notation method for things she found professionally gratifying.
Yan Qinghe ran the third joint technique integration with Luo Tianxin at the native blade body activation level for the first time. The technique output was approximately sixty percent above the calibration target. Pei Changyun revised the calibration target upward.
Bei Yufeng's cultivation session produced a second wave of original heaven energy processing in the founding array's channel. Tiangu documented this from the array's monitoring perspective. He noted, in his own dry notation style, that the processing rate was higher than the first session.
Zhan Wudi's session produced, at minute twelve, the fourth major resonance event with the founding array. Stronger than the previous three. Tiangu watched the array's response from the primary node position and made a notation that read, simply: *close.*
Xu Meilin spent the session in the cleared-space methodology with Xu Lianhua present as a formation analyst, mapping the architecture's transformation logic in real time. By the session's end they had the first two input-output pairs fully documented.
The valley ran its afternoon session. The formation network ran its monitoring cycle. Three days' travel away, eight warships and a Saint-level Sacred Ground commander moved west toward a valley that was not going to be what they expected.
---
At the sixth hour, a traveler arrived at the outer gate.
Shen Changtian was doing the evening outer boundary check when the traveler appeared on the mountain road β alone, on foot, wearing a traveling merchant's outer robes and a carrying pack that was too well-made for the clothing and a qi suppression technique that would have been convincing to a standard assessment formation.
He looked at the traveler.
The traveler looked at him.
"I am looking for the Azure Void Sect," the traveler said, with the composed courtesy of someone who had been practicing this line.
"This is it," Shen Changtian said.
"I am a merchant of formation materials from the South Bloom region," the traveler said. "I was told the sect might have interest inβ"
"Elder Pei," Shen Changtian called back toward the inner gate.
Pei Changyun appeared.
"The Jade Lotus Pavilion is sending someone to observe us," he said. "She's here."
The traveler's qi suppression technique was excellent. The traveler's expression, when two people who had immediately seen through the disguise were looking at her with calm unsurprise, was not quite as composed as it had been.
"The Patriarch is at the cultivation pond," Pei Changyun said. "He'll want to see you." She turned and walked inside. "Come in."
The traveler looked at Shen Changtian.
He gestured toward the gate, with the expression of someone who was very accustomed to welcoming people who had underestimated the valley's observation capacity.
She came in.
The gate closed behind her.
The valley noted an eleventh presence at the outer boundary β temporary classification, pending the administrative determination. The formation network continued its monitoring cycle. Shen Moran was going to need another category.
Inside, the cultivation pond waited, and the Patriarch sat beside it, and the fish ran their evening circuit, and four days remained before the advance arrived.
The valley's preparation had been thorough.
The advance had no idea.
