Lingyun did not answer Mu Qingci's question for a long time.
The garden held its evening quiet. The peach tree's canopy filtered the fading light into patterns on the soil. The root network pulsed beneath them, the healing cycle still running, the formation layer below that doing its maintenance work. Below the formation layer, the south anchor. Below the south anchor, the heart point.
Wen Zhao watched Lingyun's stillness and recognized it for what it was: not silence but preparation. The kind of stillness that precedes a thing someone has been carrying alone and is about to set down.
She said: "This one has been hearing it since the first time this one touched the heart point."
He looked at her.
"In the garden," she said. "When this one first put roots into the deep soil and found what was below. The grief. The name. This one reported the grief because this one understood the grief β grief is a feeling this one has vocabulary for. The nameβ" She stopped. "This one did not report the name because this one could not identify it as a name."
He said: "What did it sound like."
"A frequency," she said. "Below the grief, below the formation architecture, below the anchor's maintenance cycle. A sound that does not belong to the world as it is now. This one recognized it the way this one recognizes old weather β a pattern from before the alteration, something that existed when this one was young." She looked at her hands. "This one is three thousand years old. The alteration was ten thousand years ago. This one was not alive for the original world. But the echoes of the original world were still present when this one first gained awareness, and the sound from the heart point matches those echoes."
Mu Qingci said: "You heard it but couldn't read it."
"This one heard frequencies," Lingyun said. "Not words. Not a name. A pattern in the original spectrum that this one's memories could identify as pre-alteration but could not decode." She paused. "This one assumed it was the heart point's grief expressing itself in its original form. Grief in the original frequencies. This one did not consider that it was something specific being spoken."
"It's specific," Mu Qingci said. "It's a name."
"You can read it," Wen Zhao said.
The spirit looked at him from the sleeping mat. The gray-green eyes were sharp, the overnight rest and a full day of Lingyun's root-healing having cleared enough of the damage for the spirit's mind to run at something close to full capacity.
"The pre-event resonance is designed to hear and interpret original frequencies," Mu Qingci said. "That is what this physique does. The world's original sound β the frequencies from before the Stolen Heaven β are my native language. I don't translate them. I hear them the way you hear speech."
"What does the name say," he said.
"It says a piece of itself," she said. "The name is incomplete. What the heart point is singing right now is a fragment β three syllables of something longer, repeating. The fragment is enough for a pre-event resonance type to identify as a name. It's not enough for the broadcast."
He said: "How do you know it's incomplete."
"Because the fragment has gaps," she said. "The frequency pattern of a complete name in the original language has a specific harmonic structure β beginning, middle, end, each part supporting the others. What the heart point is singing has a beginning and part of a middle. The rest is held back." She paused. "It's not broken. It's deliberate. The heart point is singing what it can sing with the input it has. When the input is complete β when all ten physiques are active β the full name releases."
He sat with that.
The heart point, singing a fragment of the First Dark's original name. Enough for Mu Qingci to hear. Enough for Lingyun to detect without understanding. Not enough for the broadcast. The complete name required the complete demonstration, and the complete demonstration required ten physiques actively channeling.
Seven present. Three missing. The heart point singing its partial song under the cultivation pond, waiting for the rest of the instruments to join.
He said: "Lingyun. How long have you been hearing this."
She said: "Since the first access. Four months."
"And you didn't mention it."
"This one did not know it was a name," she said. "This one described the grief and the memorial. This one did not describe the frequency pattern because this one categorized it as ambient emotional output rather than specific communication." She looked at him. "This one was wrong."
He said: "You weren't wrong. You reported what you understood and didn't report what you didn't. That's correct procedure."
"It is late correct procedure," she said.
Mu Qingci said: "Teacher. You could not have known. The original frequencies are not in your experience set. You heard something you had no framework to interpret." She looked at Wen Zhao. "The pre-event resonance physique exists because the original frequencies require a specialized interpreter. Without that interpreter, the frequencies are ambient noise even to beings who remember the old world."
Lingyun was quiet for a moment. Then she said: "This is why you are here."
"One reason," Mu Qingci said.

Xu Lianhua came to the garden forty minutes later with an instrument she had been calibrating since dawn.
She did not greet anyone. She walked to the garden's center point, placed the instrument on the ground, and said: "The anchor's broadcast range is continental."
Wen Zhao looked at her.
"I've been tracking the output since the complete design state activated," she said. "The sixth node's completion produced an immediate change in the formation architecture's broadcast characteristics. The maintenance cycle is still local β the anchor's degradation management operates within the valley. But the demonstration signal operates on a different channel. That channel's rangeβ" She checked the instrument's readings. "I confirmed it this morning with Jin Tonghua's measurement array. The demonstration signal extends to the edges of the Xuanwu Continent."
He said: "Every practitioner on the continent can feel it."
"Not consciously," she said. "The signal operates below the threshold of standard spiritual awareness. Practitioners won't identify it as a broadcast. They'll experience it as a subtle shift in the ambient qi environment β a sense that something has changed in the background spiritual conditions. Most will attribute it to seasonal variation or regional qi fluctuations." She paused. "Pre-event resonance types, if any exist, would hear it clearly. Standard cultivators would feel it as a low-level anomaly."
The anchor was calling. The complete design state had activated the demonstration signal, and the signal was reaching every corner of the continent, broadcasting the fragment of the First Dark's name in frequencies that most people couldn't consciously identify but could subconsciously feel.
Calling the remaining three physiques. And telling the corruption network exactly where to listen.
Shen Changtian arrived at the garden with three relay messages and tea.
"The relay queue has three unusual items this week," he said. He set the tea down and organized the messages with the efficient gesture of someone who had already sorted them by priority. "From the South Bloom region: a mid-tier sect reports unusual spiritual resonance affecting their formation arrays, requesting technical consultation. From the East Wilds: the Yanhua City cultivation council reports that ambient qi measurements have shifted by approximately two percent across all monitoring stations, cause unknown. From the North Thorn: a solitary cultivator sent a message to the general relay asking whether anyone else has noticed 'a sound that isn't there.'"
Wen Zhao said: "A sound that isn't there."
"His words," Shen Changtian said. "The cultivator is Domain King tier, operates independently in the northern mountain range. His message says: 'For the past week I have been hearing a frequency in the ambient qi that does not correspond to any known formation output or cultivation technique. It is low, persistent, and appears to originate from the Upper Heaven Mountains region. I am inquiring whether this is a known phenomenon.' He included his measurement data." Shen Changtian looked at the data. "His measurement data is surprisingly precise for a solitary cultivator."
Xu Lianhua took the measurement data. She read it.
She said: "He's measuring the demonstration signal. His instruments are good enough to detect it." She looked at Wen Zhao. "This cultivator is hearing what Mu Qingci heard. Not with the same clarity β he doesn't have pre-event resonance β but his instruments are picking up the frequency."
He said: "If a solitary cultivator in the North Thorn can measure it, the corruption network already has."
"Yes," Xu Lianhua said.
"The broadcast is a beacon," he said. "The anchor is calling the remaining physiques. It's also telling the Shadow Sovereigns exactly where we are and what we're doing."
"The Shadow Sovereigns already knew," Xu Lianhua said. "The vessel on the eastern ridge confirmed it. What the broadcast adds is that every cultivation institution on the continent now has evidence that something unusual is happening in the Upper Heaven Mountains." She paused. "The Wuyuan Sacred Ground. The central authority. The remaining major sects. They'll all be investigating."
Shen Changtian said: "The Yanhua City consultation is already scheduled. The South Bloom sect's request for technical consultation is new β I haven't responded yet." He looked at Wen Zhao. "Do we acknowledge the broadcast."
He thought about it.
The broadcast couldn't be hidden. It was architectural β a function of the anchor's complete design state, not something he could turn off without dismantling the formation architecture. The demonstration signal would continue broadcasting until the placeholder seal failed or the full broadcast activated. Everyone on the continent who had instruments precise enough would keep measuring it.
He said: "Don't lie about it. If asked directly, say the Azure Void Sect's formation architecture was recently restored and is producing residual output. Don't explain the specifics."
"Residual output," Shen Changtian said. "That's technically accurate."
"That's the idea," he said.
Shen Changtian made a note. He refilled everyone's tea without being asked and left.

Bei Yufeng found him at the cultivation pond an hour later.
He was sitting on the stone step, watching the fish make their circuit. The south anchor ran its maintenance pulse. Below the water, below the formation, the heart point sang its fragment. He couldn't hear it β the Void Resonance Body operated on a different channel than the pre-event frequencies β but he knew it was there now. Three syllables of a name that had been waiting ten thousand years to be spoken completely.
Bei Yufeng sat down beside him.
She did not speak immediately. She sat with her hands on her knees and her eyes on the water and the particular quality of stillness that meant she was organizing something before presenting it. Bei Yufeng's silences were always structured. She arranged her words before she used them, the way a soldier checks equipment before deployment.
She said: "I received a letter."
He waited.
"From the Wuyuan Sacred Ground," she said. "Routed through the general relay. Addressed to me by my birth name, not my sect name. Written by the Sacred Ground's chief medical elder."
He said: "Your cousin."
"The bone rejection is accelerating," she said. "The chief medical elder's letter says the rejection entered its terminal phase three weeks ago. The medical team has been managing the symptoms but the bone's structural rejection of the host body has crossed the threshold where management is possible. The letter estimatesβ" She paused. Not from emotion. From precision. "The letter estimates four to six weeks."
He said: "What does the letter ask."
"It asks me to come to the Sacred Ground," she said. "It says the family has requested my presence. It says the medical team would appreciate consultation regarding the bone's original host compatibility data." She looked at the water. "The Celestial Origin Bone is rejecting my cousin's body. The rejection is killing him. The medical team wants to consult with the person the bone came from because they think understanding the original compatibility might help them manage the terminal phase."
He said: "Do you want to go."
She was quiet for a moment.
She said: "Pei Changyun assessed the bone reconsolidation conditions two months ago. She said the conditions are present but not guaranteed. If the primary bone completes its rejection of my cousin's body, and if my fragment architecture is in a state to receive reconsolidation, the bone may return to me." She paused. "May. Not will."
He said: "That's not what I asked."
She looked at him.
He said: "I asked if you want to go."
"I've been not-wanting anything about this for four years," she said. "I have a system for it. The system works." She looked at the fish. "The letter isn't a medical consultation request. The bone's rejection is terminal. The medical team can't manage it. They're not asking me to help them save him."
She stopped.
She said: "They're not asking me to save him. They're asking me to watch."
