The corruption zone was everything Lin Xiao had expected and worse.
He'd slipped away from the sect after midnight, moving through terrain that the orthodox disciples avoided. The boundary was marked by warning stonesâancient barriers that glowed with faded spiritual energy, warning travelers that beyond this point, the world had been poisoned.
The first sign of corruption was the vegetation. Trees twisted into shapes that nature never intended, their bark oozing dark sap that hissed against the ground. Flowers bloomed in colors that hurt to look at, their petals concealing mouths lined with needle-like teeth. Even the grass seemed wrongâtoo sharp, too aware, rustling without wind.
*Welcome to what remains of the old battlefields,* the Emperor said. *Ten thousand years ago, this entire region was soaked in demonic energy during the war. The corruption never fully faded.*
"And this is where beasts spawn?"
*Where corruption concentrates, creatures emerge. Some are natural animals transformed by exposure. Others are pure manifestationsâhunger and violence given form.*
Lin Xiao moved carefully, his enhanced senses alert for threats. The demonic essence within him resonated with the surrounding corruption, creating a strange harmony that was both comforting and disturbing. He belonged here, in a way that he'd never belonged to the mortal world.
The first beast found him within the hour.
It was smaller than the wolf that had attacked the sectâsomething like a corrupted dog, its body stretched and elongated into predatory configurations. It circled him, testing, probing for weakness.
Lin Xiao didn't wait for it to attack.
He moved first, closing the distance before the beast could react. His transformation came easier this timeâclaws extending, scales erupting, power flooding through limbs that welcomed the change. The fight lasted seconds, ending with the beast's throat torn out and its corrupted blood soaking into the poisoned earth.
*Good. You're learning to initiate rather than react.* The Emperor's approval was tangible. *But don't become overconfident. That was the weakest creature you'll face tonight.*
The night became a hunting ground.
Lin Xiao moved deeper into the corruption zone, seeking stronger prey. Each kill fed his cultivation, the absorbed demonic essence strengthening his core and advancing his understanding of the Infernal path. The transformation became more naturalâless something he achieved and more something he was.
He killed a corrupted bear that stood twice his height. A pack of shadow-hounds that attacked in coordinated waves. A serpent-thing that seemed made entirely of malice given physical form.
By dawn, he'd advanced from Corruption Seed to the edge of Infernal Awakeningâmonths of progress compressed into a single night of violence.
*Impressive,* the Emperor acknowledged. *But also dangerous. This rate of advancement will attract attention from entities far stronger than what you've faced.*
"What kind of entities?"
*The corruption zones aren't just spawning grounds. They're territories. Claimed by demons who've made their lairs in the poisoned earth.* The Emperor's voice carried warning. *You've killed their servants. Eventually, the masters will notice.*
As if summoned by the words, something shifted in the distance.
Not a beastâsomething larger. Something that radiated presence rather than just power. Lin Xiao felt it before he saw it: a weight pressing against his consciousness, ancient and utterly hostile.
*Run,* the Emperor commanded. *Now. You're not ready for that.*
Lin Xiao ran.
The thing pursuing him didn't chase physicallyâit moved through the corruption itself, riding waves of demonic energy that made the ground beneath Lin Xiao's feet unstable. He could feel it closing, sensing his essence, recognizing him as something that shouldn't exist.
*A demon, not a beast. Something that survived the sealing and made this place its home.*
"How do I lose it?"
*You can't. Not while you're inside its territory.* A pause. *But you can make yourself unappetizing. Release your controlâlet the Emperor fragment's presence become visible.*
"Won't that reveal what I am?"
*To the demon, yes. But it will also show that you're carrying something far more powerful than yourself. Most demons are practicalâthey won't risk conflict with something that might destroy them.*
Lin Xiao had no better options.
He stopped running, turned to face the approaching presence, and let his concealment fall away completely.
The Demon Emperor's fragment blazed within his core, its ancient power radiating outward like a beacon. The pursuing entity halted, its vast attention focusing on what Lin Xiao had revealed.
Silence.
Then, unexpectedly, the thing withdrew. Not in defeat, but in recognitionâacknowledging something it hadn't expected to find.
*It knows what you carry,* the Emperor explained. *My essence is older than most demons, and my reputation precedes me. That creature just realized it was hunting a vessel of the Demon Emperor.*
"And that's good?"
*For now. It means word will spread through the demonic networks. Other entities will learn that something of me has returned.* A pause. *Some will come seeking to serve. Others will come seeking to destroy. Either way, your anonymity is ending.*
Lin Xiao absorbed this as he made his way back toward the sect's territory. The night had been productiveâhe'd advanced significantly and gained combat experience that would serve him well.
But it had also cost him something. The demons knew about him now. Whatever protection obscurity had offered was gone.
*The game is changing,* the Emperor observed. *You're no longer just a hidden cultivator in a hostile sect. You're a player in a larger conflict.*
"I didn't ask for a larger conflict."
*No one does. But power attracts attention, and attention attracts conflict. The only question is whether you'll be strong enough when it arrives.*
Lin Xiao emerged from the corruption zone as the sun rose, carrying evidence of his killsâclaws, fangs, demonic cores that would prove his capability to anyone who examined them.
---
Su Mei was waiting near the sect's outer boundary.
"You went in there," she said, her voice carefully controlled. "Into the corruption zone."
"I had to."
"You could have died."
"I could die every day. At least this death would have meant something." He showed her the demonic cores in his pack. "These will force the Sect Master to take me seriously. To give me resources for training, access to techniques, the things that have been denied to me for years."
"And your transformation?" Her healer's senses had clearly detected the changes. "You're more demonic now than you were yesterday."
"I know."
"Does that worry you?"
Lin Xiao considered the question honestly. "Sometimes. The power feels goodâmaybe too good. But I'm still in control. Still making choices."
"For now."
"For now." He met her eyes. "If that changesâif I start becoming something I shouldn't beâI need you to tell me."
"And if you don't listen?"
"Then do whatever you have to do."
The words hung between them, heavy with implication. He was asking her to be his anchorâthe person who would pull him back from the edge or end him if he fell over it.
Su Mei studied him for a long moment.
"Alright," she said finally. "I'll watch. I'll tell you. And if necessary, I'll act."
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet." Her expression was complicatedâfear and care and determination all mixed together. "You're asking me to be responsible for your soul. That's not a small thing."
"I know. But you're the only person I trust to do it."
She didn't respond. But she took his hand as they walked back toward the sect, and her grip was steady despite everything.
