The demon found them three months into their training.
Lin Xiao sensed the presence firstâa vast spiritual signature approaching through the chaotic wilderness, powerful enough to make the corruption itself tremble in recognition. Whatever was coming, it wasn't another random beast or lost cultivator.
It was something ancient.
"We have company," he told Su Mei and Old Ghost Feng.
The ghost's form flickered with agitation. "I know that signature. Hei Yanâa Hell Wolf from the original demon legions. One of the few who survived the Sealing."
"Friend or enemy?"
"Neither. Hell Wolves serve strength, nothing else. If he's coming here, it's because he sensed your power and wants to assess it."
*Or challenge it,* the Emperor added. *Hell Wolves were my shock troops during the war. They're utterly pragmaticâthey follow whoever proves themselves worthy.*
"And if I don't prove myself worthy?"
*Then he'll try to kill you and take the fragments you carry.*
The Hell Wolf arrived at sunset.
He emerged from the corruption in humanoid formâa scarred warrior with eyes like burning coal and an aura that spoke of millennia of violence. His presence pressed against Lin Xiao's consciousness, testing, probing, evaluating what it found.
"You carry the Emperor's essence." Hei Yan's voice was like gravel being crushed. "His Core, plus the Wrath aspect. Interesting combination for such a young vessel."
"You're here to challenge me?"
"I'm here to determine if you're worth following or killing. The distinction matters to Hell Wolves." The demon's form rippled, revealing glimpses of his true natureâsomething far larger and more terrible than his humanoid appearance suggested. "The Emperor was my master before the Sealing. His consciousness called to me across centuries. I've been waiting to see what remained of him."
*He's telling the truth. Hei Yan was one of my most loyal commanders.*
"The Emperor says you served him."
"I served the strongest. He was that." Hei Yan's burning eyes studied Lin Xiao with predatory attention. "The question is whether you can become that as well."
"And you'll decide through combat."
"Combat reveals truth that words cannot." The demon's aura intensified. "Survive long enough to impress me, and I'll serve you. Fail, and I'll end you. Either way, we'll both know what you're worth."
Lin Xiao glanced at Su Mei and Old Ghost Feng. Both understood what was about to happenâneither interfered.
"Alright," he said. "Let's find out."
---
The battle that followed was the most intense of Lin Xiao's life.
Hei Yan's true form was a nightmare made fleshâa wolf the size of a building, wreathed in hellfire, with jaws that could crack mountains. His attacks came with speed that Lin Xiao could barely track, power that made his previous opponents seem like children.
But Lin Xiao had changed since those early fights.
He met the Hell Wolf's assault with everything he'd learnedâtransformation flowing instantly, the Wrath fragment channeling processed rage into devastating counterstrikes, the integrated demonic essence moving as naturally as breath.
"Better than expected," Hei Yan acknowledged as they clashed. "You've been trained properly."
"I've had good teachers."
"A ghost who mastered what others could not, and an ancient consciousness who remembers what true power means." The Hell Wolf's attacks intensified. "But knowledge isn't strength. Show me what YOU are, not what they've given you."
*He wants to see your core. The thing that makes you Lin Xiao, not just another vessel.*
Lin Xiao stopped relying on the Emperor's techniques. Stopped drawing on old patterns and taught methods. Instead, he fought as himselfâthe servant who'd survived ten years of abuse, the cultivator who'd chosen humanity over surrender, the being who was becoming something new.
His strikes became less elegant but more personal. His defense shifted from textbook patterns to instinctive responses. The demonic power flowed through him not as a foreign essence but as an extension of his own will.
Hei Yan's assault slowed, then stopped entirely.
"There," the Hell Wolf said, returning to humanoid form. "That's what I needed to see."
"What do you mean?"
"The Emperor's vessels have always fallen into two categoriesâthose who become him, and those who use him to become themselves. The first kind are powerful but predictable. The second kind..." Hei Yan's expression shifted to something almost respectful. "The second kind might actually survive what's coming."
"What's coming?"
"The other fragments are stirring. The beings who carry them have felt your absorptions, your growth. Some will come seeking reunification. Others will come seeking to destroy you before you can challenge their dominion." The Hell Wolf knelt, a formal gesture that carried weight despite his casual tone. "I choose to serve you, Lin Xiao. Not because of the Emperor's essenceâbecause of what I saw in that fight. You're becoming something worth following."
Lin Xiao stared at the ancient demon, uncertain how to respond.
*Accept his service,* the Emperor advised. *Hell Wolves are oaths bound by honorâhe won't betray you once he's committed.*
"I accept your service," Lin Xiao said formally.
Hei Yan rose, his burning eyes gleaming with what might have been satisfaction.
"Then we should discuss what's coming. The fragments you need to gather. The enemies you'll have to face." His smile revealed teeth that were far too sharp. "And the Orthodox Alliance force that's been tracking your position for the past week."
"What?"
"They found the temple's location two days ago. They're mobilizing nowâa full purification army this time, not just a hunting squad." Hei Yan's expression was grim. "You have maybe forty-eight hours before they arrive."
---
Emergency planning sessions followed.
"We can't fight an army," Old Ghost Feng said bluntly. "Even with Hei Yan's support, the numbers are impossible."
"Then we run again," Su Mei suggested.
"Running won't solve anything long-term. They'll keep pursuing until they catch us or we become too powerful to hunt." Lin Xiao's mind raced through options. "What if we don't run OR fight?"
"What's the alternative?"
*The corruption zone. The Orthodox Alliance can't operate effectively in territory this unstable.*
"The wilderness itself," Lin Xiao realized. "If we draw them deeper into the corruption, their numerical advantage becomes a liability. They can't maintain formation in chaosâtheir coordination falls apart."
"Guerrilla warfare against a purification army," Hei Yan mused. "Risky. But potentially effective."
"We'd need to evacuate the temple," Old Ghost Feng said. "My archivesâ"
"Can be moved. I know where." The Hell Wolf's expression was calculating. "There are places in the deep corruption where nothing orthodox can survive. We retreat there, force them to either follow and die or give up and go home."
"And if they're stubborn enough to pursue regardless?"
"Then we make them regret it."
Lin Xiao looked around at his unlikely allianceâa ghost, a healer, and a demon wolf. Not what he'd expected when he climbed down that cliff months ago.
"We have two days," he said. "Let's prepare."
