The Hungerer's approach was nothing like the Seducer's subtlety.
Coalition scouts reported the devastation firstâterritories consumed entirely, leaving nothing but spiritual void where demon populations had existed. The Gluttony bearer didn't negotiate or observe. He fed.
"He's moving toward the Tyrant's domain," Ran Feng reported during an emergency council session. "But his path will take him through coalition territory first. Several member territories lie directly in his approach."
"Can we evacuate them?"
"We're trying. But the Hungerer moves faster than expected, and consumption expands his range. Every territory he absorbs makes him more dangerous." Her crimson eyes carried genuine fearâsomething Lin Xiao had never seen in her before. "I've faced many threats in three centuries of rule. Nothing compares to what's coming."
"What do we know about fighting the Gluttony bearer?"
"Nothing encouraging. Historical accounts describe failed attempts to stop him during the ancient wars. Armies were consumed. Champions were devoured. Even other fragment bearers gave him wide berth." Ran Feng's voice was tight. "The only thing that stopped him was the Demon Emperor himself."
*She's correct,* the Emperor confirmed. *The Gluttony fragment is unique among my aspectsâit grows without limit, consuming everything it touches. The more it feeds, the stronger it becomes.*
"How did you stop it?"
*I integrated it. Absorbed the bearer and took the fragment into myself.* A pause. *But that bearer was weaker than what you're facing. The current Hungerer has been feeding for millennia. He may have grown beyond what integration can manage.*
"So fighting is suicide and running is just delaying the inevitable."
*Unless you find an approach I didn't consider.* The Emperor's tone carried something unusualâuncertainty. *I designed the Gluttony aspect for destruction. I never anticipated needing to counter it.*
---
The coalition mobilized for evacuation rather than battle.
Demon territories in the Hungerer's path began emptying, their populations flowing toward Lin Xiao's community and other relatively safe positions. The exodus brought thousands of refugees, straining resources and infrastructure that were already struggling to support the coalition's rapid growth.
"We can't sustain this influx," Liu Chen reported. "Food stores are depleting. Shelter capacity is exceeded. The corruption zone's stabilization techniques are being overwhelmed by the spiritual pressure of so many beings."
"What are our options?"
"Limit acceptance. Turn away refugees who aren't coalition members." Liu Chen's expression showed he knew how that sounded. "It's brutal, but it's practical."
"It's also exactly what the orthodox world does to corruption victims." Lin Xiao shook his head. "We can't become what we're fighting against."
"Then we need resources from somewhere. The current situation isn't sustainable for more than a few weeks."
"Bai Lian." Lin Xiao turned to the observer. "Can the Orthodox Alliance help?"
"I've been pushing for intervention since the Hungerer's movement was confirmed. Some Council factions are considering resource allocation." Bai Lian's expression was frustrated. "But bureaucratic processes take time, and political opposition is delaying even basic humanitarian support."
"What about unofficial channels?"
"Elder Liu has been coordinating with sympathetic sects independently of the Council. Supplies are trickling in, but not at the scale we need." She paused. "There might be another option."
"Name it."
"The Celestial Harmony Sectâmy sectâmaintains significant cultivation resources. If I request emergency allocation under observer authority, they might provide what you need." Bai Lian met his eyes. "It would compromise my neutral status. The Council would see it as taking sides."
"Would they remove you?"
"Possibly. But by the time they processed the recall, the crisis would be resolved one way or another." Her expression was determined. "Let me help. Whatever it costs my position."
Lin Xiao saw the conviction in her eyesâthe same conviction he'd seen develop over months of observation turning into alliance.
"Do it. And thank you."
"Thank me when the resources arrive. Until then, it's just commitment."
---
The Hungerer's first contact with coalition territory came three days later.
A demon territory on the coalition's outer edgeâa small domain ruled by a lord named Kai Feng who had joined the coalition seeking protection from the Tyrantâsimply ceased to exist. One moment the territory's spiritual signature was visible on detection crystals. The next moment, there was nothing.
No battle. No warning. No survivors.
Just void where existence used to be.
"Complete consumption," Old Ghost Feng analyzed, studying the remnant signatures. "The Gluttony fragment doesn't just killâit absorbs. Everything the consumed beings ever were becomes part of the Hungerer's power."
"Including cultivation techniques?"
"Including everything. Memories, abilities, spiritual essence, physical form. The beings he consumes become... fuel."
Lin Xiao felt cold certainty settle over him. This wasn't a threat that could be negotiated with or fled from. The Hungerer would keep feeding until everything was consumed, and nothing short of stopping him would end the devastation.
"I have to fight him."
"That's suicide," Hei Yan said flatly. "You heard the historical accounts. Even the Demon Emperor had difficulty stopping him."
"The Demon Emperor stopped him by integration. I carry the Core fragmentâthe foundation that makes integration possible." Lin Xiao met his advisor's burning eyes. "If anyone can do what the Emperor did, it's me."
"The Emperor had full control of his fragments. You're still developing. The power differentialâ"
"Is irrelevant if the alternative is watching the Hungerer consume everyone I've sworn to protect." Lin Xiao stood, feeling the fragments within him resonate with determination. "I'm not planning to fight him directly. That would be suicide. But I might be able to... redirect him."
"Redirect how?"
"Show him a meal more attractive than coalition territory." Lin Xiao's expression was grim. "The Tyrant. The Mimic. Fragment bearers whose essence is more valuable than ordinary demons."
*That's... actually clever,* the Emperor admitted. *The Gluttony aspect prioritizes the most nourishing sources. If you could demonstrate that other fragment bearers are more valuable prey...*
"He'd hunt them instead of us."
*Theoretically. But getting his attention without being consumed in the process would be extraordinarily dangerous.*
"Everything about this situation is extraordinarily dangerous. At least this gives us a chance."
---
The plan required speed and precision.
Lin Xiao moved through the corruption zone toward the Hungerer's position, carrying fragment essence that he hoped would serve as bait. The idea was simple: show the Gluttony bearer that more valuable prey existed elsewhere, then retreat before he could be consumed.
The execution was anything but simple.
The Hungerer's consumption zone was visible from miles awayâa sphere of absolute void that expanded steadily as it fed. Within that sphere, nothing existed. Not matter, not energy, not even the chaotic spiritual signatures that characterized the corruption zone.
Pure, perfect emptiness.
And at its center, barely visible through the void, was a form that defied descriptionâa mass of consumed essence that had long since lost any resemblance to its original shape.
*He's enormous,* the Emperor observed. *Much larger than when I faced him. Millennia of feeding have made him something beyond what I created.*
"Can the plan still work?"
*Unknown. The Gluttony aspect responds to valuable essence, but at this size, he might simply consume everything without prioritizing.*
Lin Xiao stopped at the edge of the consumption zone, feeling its hunger pressing against his spiritual defenses. The Greed fragment within him recognized kinshipâunderstood the endless wanting that drove the Hungerer's existence.
"Hey!" he shouted, channeling fragment power into his voice. "I have something you want!"
The void trembled.
The Hungerer's attention shifted toward himâan awareness so alien that Lin Xiao felt his mind struggling to comprehend it. There was no consciousness in the traditional sense, no intelligence that could be reasoned with. Just hunger, eternal and absolute.
**Feed.**
The wordâif it could be called thatâpressed against Lin Xiao's consciousness with crushing weight. It carried the consumed essences of countless beings, their identities merged into the single overwhelming need to consume.
"I carry fragments of the Demon Emperor. Wrath, Greed, traces of Pride." Lin Xiao held his ground despite every instinct screaming to flee. "But there are other bearers. The Tyrant carries the full Pride fragment. The Mimic carries Envy. They're gathering in the Tyrant's territory, preparing for war."
**More... feed...**
"Yes. More. Much more than me." Lin Xiao retreated slowly, maintaining the Hungerer's attention. "The Tyrant's domain is that direction. Full fragment bearers. Full essences. The most valuable meal you've ever encountered."
The void trembled again.
Something that might have been consideration passed through the Hungerer's awareness. The Gluttony aspect wasn't intelligent, but it was instinctive. It could recognize when other prey was more nourishing.
**Fragment bearers... more...**
"Much more. Go that way. Feed on them instead of coalition territory."
The void began to shift.
Slowly, ponderously, the Hungerer's consumption zone started movingânot toward Lin Xiao, but in the direction he'd indicated. Toward the Tyrant's domain.
It was working.
Lin Xiao continued his careful retreat, maintaining distance while keeping the Hungerer's attention focused on the promised prey.
*You've done it,* the Emperor said, something like awe in his voice. *You've redirected the most dangerous of my fragments using nothing but words and fragment resonance.*
"Not done yet. He might change direction. Decide I'm easier prey."
*But you've bought time. Time for evacuation. Time for preparation. Time for the Tyrant to deal with a threat he didn't anticipate.*
Lin Xiao reached safe distance and stopped, watching the Hungerer's consumption zone move steadily toward the Tyrant's territory.
The coalition was safe, at least from this direction. Lin Xiao watched the Hungerer's consumption zone shrink into the distance and felt something unexpectedâa flicker of pity for the Tyrant and the Mimic. They'd been building their alliance, planning their assault, preparing to crush the coalition. Now something far worse than Lin Xiao was heading their way, and they had no idea it was coming. The Hungerer showed no mercy, and it made no distinctions between those who deserved destruction and those who didn't. It just fed.
