News of the Tyrant's defeat arrived through coalition intelligence networks.
The Hungerer had consumed the Pride bearer's domain entirelyâterritory, armies, generals, everything the Tyrant had built over centuries. The only survivor of note was the Tyrant himself, who had escaped the consumption zone through techniques that burned out most of his stored power.
"He's weakened," Ran Feng reported, barely concealing her satisfaction. "The Pride bearer who threatened everyone is now barely stronger than a mid-level demon lord. His fragment remains intact, but his cultivation has been devastated."
"Where is he now?"
"Fleeing toward neutral territory. Several of his former enemies are pursuing, hoping to finish what the Hungerer started."
Lin Xiao processed this information with mixed feelings. The Tyrant had been his most immediate threat, the enemy who had attacked his community twice and would have destroyed everything given the opportunity. His fall should have brought relief.
Instead, Lin Xiao felt something closer to unease.
"The Hungerer's still out there. What's he doing now?"
"Feeding on the territories the Tyrant abandoned. The consumption zone has expanded significantlyâhe's becoming more dangerous by the day."
"And he'll keep expanding until something stops him."
"Or until he runs out of prey." Ran Feng's expression was grim. "At current expansion rates, he'll consume half the demon realm within a year. Then he'll move on to other realms."
"Including the human territories."
"Including everything."
*The Gluttony fragment was my mistake,* the Emperor admitted. *I designed it for destruction without limit. I never anticipated needing to stop it.*
"There has to be a way."
*Integration. Consuming the consumer. But the current Hungerer has fed for millenniaâhis essence is larger than anything I've encountered.* A pause. *Larger than what I was when I integrated the original bearer.*
"You're saying it might be impossible."
*I'm saying it would require power you don't currently possess. Multiple fragment integration at a level beyond what we've achieved.* The Emperor's presence felt heavy. *Or assistance from sources we haven't considered.*

The debate about the Hungerer dominated coalition councils.
"We can't ignore him," Hei Yan argued. "Redirecting him toward the Tyrant bought time, but it didn't solve the problem. Eventually, he'll turn toward coalition territory again."
"What options do we have?" Liu Chen asked.
"Limited ones. Direct confrontation is suicideâeven the Emperor acknowledges that. Evacuation buys time but doesn't address the root threat."
"What about alliances?" Bai Lian interjected. "The Hungerer threatens everyone equally. Even beings who normally oppose the coalition might cooperate against an existential threat."
"Like who?"
"The Orthodox Alliance, for one. The Council has been watching the demon realm situation with growing concern. If the Hungerer expands beyond demon territories, human realms become targets."
"Would they cooperate with demon factions?"
"To prevent extinction? Some would. The moderates have been arguing for exactly this kind of emergency alliance." Bai Lian's expression was thoughtful. "And the remaining fragment bearers have their own interests. The Seducer, the Mimic, even the Sleeperânone of them benefits from the Hungerer consuming everything."
Lin Xiao considered this. The idea of multi-faction cooperation against an existential threat had been theoretical until now. The Hungerer made it necessary.
"Reach out to everyone," he decided. "The Orthodox Alliance, the remaining fragment bearers, any faction that recognizes the threat. See who's willing to discuss coordination."
"The Seducer will use this as leverage," Ran Feng warned.
"Let her. Her leverage depends on there being a world left to leverage." Lin Xiao met her eyes. "We'll be careful about accepting her help. But refusing to talk to her guarantees nothing."
---
The diplomatic outreach produced surprising results.
The Orthodox Allianceâor at least the moderate factions Bai Lian representedâagreed to emergency coordination. Resources flowed to coalition territory faster than before, and intelligence sharing created a more complete picture of the Hungerer's movements.
The Mimic, still lurking in neutral territory, sent word that she was willing to meet. Her message was characteristically opportunistic: "Common threats require common responses. Let's discuss terms."
Even the Sleeperâthe Sloth fragment bearer who had been dormant for centuriesâshowed signs of stirring. The Hungerer's approach toward his territory was apparently alarming enough to overcome the entropy that usually kept him unconscious.
And the Seducer reappeared.
She arrived at the community's border exactly as beforeâalone, unthreatening, radiating beauty that shifted to match whatever the observer found most attractive.
"You've been busy," she observed, her violet eyes taking in the expanded defenses, the increased population, the signs of a community becoming a power. "The coalition's growth exceeded my expectations."
"The Hungerer's threat accelerated everything."
"Threats often do. Fear is a powerful motivatorâsecond only to desire." She smiled, and the expression carried layers of meaning Lin Xiao couldn't fully parse. "You redirected the Gluttony bearer toward the Tyrant. Clever, but also cruel."
"Cruel?"
"You condemned an entire domain to consumption. Thousands of demons who served the Tyrant because they had no choice, destroyed to buy your coalition time." Her smile sharpened. "Don't misunderstandâI'm not judging. I'm admiring. You made a difficult choice and committed to it completely. That's rare among beings who claim to be principled."
"I didn't enjoy it."
"That's the point. You did it anyway. Principles without action are just words. You're proving that you'll act on yours, even when the actions are ugly."
Lin Xiao felt the truth of her observation like a blade between his ribs. He had condemned the Tyrant's domain to destruction. The beings consumed by the Hungerer had been enemies, but they had also been peopleâcreatures with lives and desires and futures that no longer existed.
"Why are you here?"
"To offer my assistance against the Hungerer." The Seducer's expression became serious. "The Gluttony bearer threatens everythingâincluding the desires I cultivate. If existence is consumed, there's nothing left to want."
"You want to ally with the coalition."
"I want to ensure survival. Alliance is a means to that end." She moved closer, and Lin Xiao felt her fragment power brush against his consciousness. "I have knowledge about the Hungerer that others don't. Techniques for disrupting his consumption. Weaknesses that might be exploited."
"What do you want in return?"
"Your attention. Your willingness to listen when I speak. Your acknowledgment that I'm not your enemyânot yet, not necessarily ever."
"That's... less than I expected."
"For now. The Hungerer is the immediate threat. Addressing it serves all our interests." Her smile returned, mysterious and knowing. "What comes after depends on choices neither of us has made yet."
---
The information the Seducer provided was valuable.
The Hungerer's consumption wasn't limitlessâthere were intervals of dormancy between feeding cycles, moments when his defenses lowered and his expansion slowed. The Gluttony fragment needed to process what it had consumed before it could effectively consume more.
"The intervals are brief," Old Ghost Feng analyzed. "Hours, not days. But they represent windows of vulnerability."
"Vulnerability to what? Even at his weakest, the Hungerer is stronger than any of us."
"Perhaps. But strength isn't the only factor." The ghost's expression was thoughtful. "The Gluttony fragment responds to essence. What if that response could be manipulated?"
"How?"
"By providing essence that disrupts rather than nourishes. Poison, essentiallyâsomething the fragment wants to consume but can't actually digest."
*That's theoretically possible,* the Emperor confirmed. *The Gluttony aspect recognizes fragment essence as particularly valuable. If you could create fragment energy that was toxic rather than nourishing...*
"Would it work?"
*I don't know. The concept is sound, but the execution would require techniques we haven't developed.* A pause. *Though the Seducer might have relevant knowledge. The Lust fragment deals in corrupted desireâcreating wants that destroy rather than satisfy.*
Lin Xiao considered seeking more information from the Seducer, then paused. Her help came with costs he couldn't fully assess. Every interaction, every piece of knowledge, every assistance she offered deepened a relationship that might eventually be used against him.
But the alternative was facing the Hungerer without every advantage he could gather.
"Set up a meeting," he told Ran Feng. "The Seducer, the Mimic, anyone willing to coordinate against the Hungerer. We'll explore every option."
"Including options that might be traps?"
"Including options that might be traps. We'll be careful, but we can't be so careful that we guarantee defeat through inaction."
The demon lord nodded, her expression conveying approval that surprised Lin Xiao.
"You're learning to think like a power," she observed. "Not just a survivor, but someone who shapes events rather than just reacting to them."
"Is that a compliment?"
"It's an observation. Whether it's a compliment depends on what you do with the capability."
Lin Xiao nodded, feeling the weight of it. The Hungerer was still out there, consuming. Multiple fragment bearers were in motion, each with their own calculations. And he was at the center of a coalition that might be the only thing standing between the consumption zone and the rest of the worldâor might itself become the next catastrophe if he made the wrong calls. Either way, there was only one direction to move.
