Viktor had projected the cluster's return at thirty-six to forty-eight hours, based on the contact pattern from the secondary tendril and the adaptation behavior the primary cluster had displayed during its first contact. What he hadn't projectedâhadn't had enough data to projectâwas that the primary cluster would return at a different structural level.
The first wave had been assessment. The cluster had spent three hours mapping the fracture wall, learning the conversion architecture's response profile, identifying the seam boundaries and junction transitions. The second wave used that map.
Kael felt it arrive before the monitoring system flagged it.
"It's already at the southwestern section," he said. "Not approaching. There."
Marcus was at the fracture wall within forty seconds. Twenty-eight hours of continuous elevated output behind himâthe contact period, the post-contact architectural reinforcement work Dara had pushed to complete before the cluster returned, the Vestia monitoring while Varek continued its foundational probing of the vel'mar architecture. He was not impaired. He was also not fresh.
The cluster drove directly for the southwestern junction seamâthe specific transition point it had spent nineteen minutes at in the first contact wave. It knew the coverage gap was there. It knew the position of the junction boundary. It had spent eighteen hours processing the data it gathered and returned with a targeted approach.
Marcus laid his hands on the conversion architecture and added his output to the southwestern seam. The cluster's consumption pressure met the gate-sense reinforcement and the organic growth's conversion yield increased in response. The junction held.
The cluster repositioned to the northeastern section. He moved.
"It's running a relay pattern," Viktor said, watching the display. "Alternating between two targeted positions, forcing Marcus to track it across the fracture wall. Each transitâhe loses five to seven seconds of direct contact with each position."
The relay continued. Marcus tracked it. The organic growth's elevated post-contact density in both targeted sections helpedâthe first wave's attack had inadvertently strengthened the sections it had pressured. The cluster was encountering more resistance than its data had predicted.
It found a third target.
The modified junction section in the eastern wallâa section Marcus had reinforced three weeks ago during the early crisis period, a junction that had been under sustained pressure for longer than any other section and had the particular structural profile of architecture that had been repaired multiple times. Dense on the surface. Subtler weaknesses below.
The cluster drove into it.
Marcus was still moving from the northeastern section when the pressure spiked.
The junction held for ninety seconds without his hands on it. He was fifteen feet away, moving at the pace that twenty-eight hours of sustained output allowed. The cluster increased pressure as the junction's resistance began to thin. He felt it through the gate-sense before his hands made contactâthe sensation of architecture beginning to compress, the conversion process falling behind the consumption force being applied to it.
He reached the eastern section and pushed.
Too hard.
He felt it the instant it happenedâthe over-reinforcement, the gate-sense pressure exceeding the junction's current structural tolerances. He'd pushed the conversion architecture's density too high, too fast, trying to outpace the cluster's pressure spike before the junction failed, and the pressure differential between the reinforcement surge and the surrounding architecture created a wave front that traveled through the junction and hit one of the organic growth nodes.
The node cracked.
Not catastrophically. The node was one of seven in the eastern section, and the crack was partialâthe node structure compromised but not severed, the growth tissue ruptured on one side while the other maintained partial function. The conversion output in the eastern section dropped immediately, the cracked node's contribution dropping to approximately thirty percent of normal before the architecture rerouted around the damage.
The eastern section's conversion rate fell to sixty-one percent of full function.
The cluster probed the damaged zone for three minutes, then withdrew to ambient monitoring. The contact pressure dropped.
Marcus stood at the eastern section with his hands on the junction surface and felt the cracked node's absence in the conversion architecture's output like a missing note in a chord. The other nodes compensating, the architecture rerouting, the damage being managed. Not unmanageable. But real and specific and his fault.
He didn't move for a moment.
Behind him, Viktor was already at the instruments. He didn't need to say what the data showed.

"The eastern section's conversion output dropped at 0919," Viktor said. Not accusatoryâViktor never did accusatory. He stated facts, and he stated the facts that mattered first. Full recovery estimated at six to eight weeks." He pulled up the adjusted projections. "The eastern section's reduced conversion rate materially affects the monthly consumption advance baseline."
"How much?" Dara asked.
"Point zero four centimeters additional per month, above the previous baseline, for the recovery period." Viktor's stylus moved. "At the current combined monthly advanceâpoint three one baseline plus point zero four recovery costâwe are at point three five per month. The Vestia commitment cost has been reduced by the independent maintenance protocol. The net advance rate is point three five, previously it was point three one."
The numbers were specific. Dara and Kael and Maya heard them and processed them. Lucas, at the edge of the room, was very still.
"I pushed too hard," Marcus said. He was still at the fracture wall. He hadn't moved from the eastern section. "The cluster hit the eastern junction under pressure. I was trying to get reinforcement in before the junction failed and I overcorrected. The pressure differential cracked the node."
No one said anything.
"I know what it costs," Marcus said. "I know what the math looks like." He finally turned around. "We work around it."
Dara had her tablet out. She'd already started.

He told them about the Harvester at 1100.
He should have told them at 0100 the morning after the Architect's contact. He'd made the choice to waitânot to withhold indefinitely but to let the cluster situation resolve first, to not introduce a second major threat while the first was still active. He'd told himself the timing would be better in the morning. Then the morning had the cluster's second wave in it, and the cracked node, and the wait had compounded until it was five hours after the fact he'd intended to wait until, and the team deserved to know and he'd been sitting on information for no good reason except that he was tired and hadn't wanted to have the conversation.
He told them.
The Architect's contact through the gate-sense architecture. The Harvesterâentities that consumed compatible developments before threshold events could occur. The four-day approach timeline from the Architect's initial warning, now down to approximately forty-eight hours given what had passed. Anchor point seven's activation broadcasting the Order's development to anyone monitoring the dimensional fabric for compatible architecture signals.
He told them about the convergence point coordinates too. The Architect's suggestion that preparation resources existed there. The instruction to wait until the immediate situation was resolved.
The room was quiet for a long time after.
"You've had this information since 2315 two days ago," Viktor said.
"Yes."
Viktor picked at his cuticle. Stopped. His jaw went tight and stayed tight. "The Harvester's forty-eight-hour timeline. The fracture wall contact was eighteen hours ago. Twelve hours before that contact, this information was available." He looked at his tablet. "A strategic briefing at 0100 would not have prevented the second wave. The timeline was already set." A pause. "I note this for the record."
"Noted," Marcus said.
"The framework document has a section on communication requirements," Lucas said. He wasn't looking at Marcus when he said it. He was looking at his notes. "I should add something about information that affects threat assessment."
"Add it," Marcus said.
Maya hadn't spoken. She was at the secondary harmonic monitoring station, the dual frequency running. When she spoke, it wasn't about Marcus. "The Harvester consumes compatible architectures before threshold events can occur. The Architect said it seven times in your account. Seven times its previous compatible architecture collections were harvested." She looked at the display. "Seven times the pattern the Architect has been building for nine thousand years was stripped before it could complete." She turned to look at Marcus. "And now there's a Harvester forty-eight hours out."
"Yes," Marcus said.
"And the Architect told you about the convergence point. When the immediate situation is resolved." She paused. "The Architect is managing us toward the convergence point while a Harvester approaches. It's notâit's not giving us the tools to handle the Harvester independently. It's moving us toward a specific location at a specific time."
No one had a response to this.
Dara was already working on the Harvester problem with the operational focus she brought to all problemsâthe specific question of what the fracture wall architecture could do against something that worked at the dimensional foundation level, below the barrier layer. Viktor was pulling up every data point the Architect had provided about Harvester operation. Kael was extending his between-dimension sensing toward the incoming threat vector, trying to get a read on the Harvester's dimensional profile before it arrived.
They were all working. That was how things went hereâthe conversation ended and the room just kept moving.

Marcus didn't look at the food for a while. He sat with the eastern section's cracked node data on his tablet, the adjusted projections, the Harvester timeline, the Harvester's operational characteristics as Viktor was building them out from the Architect's description, the vel'mar's response to Dael's resonant technique, the convergence point coordinates encoded in the gate-sense.
He thought about the over-reinforcement. The moment his hands had pressed too hard because he was tired and trying to outpace something that was outpacing him.
He'd been wrong to withhold the Architect's contact. He'd been wrong to rush the eastern junction.
The cracked node was specific. Twenty-one to twenty-four days to partial recovery, six to eight to full. The math was what it was.
He looked at the plate. Something Kael had taken from the messârice, something cooked. Simple.
Marcus picked up the fork and ate.
