A different technician — younger, carrying equipment she hadn't seen in the previous calibration cycles, wearing the maintenance division's standard uniform with a badge Sora noted: Han Seyeon, bioarchitectural systems, level two access. She sat at the bedside table, connected the calibration interface to the monitoring band via a direct-link cable, and ran the recalibration protocol from a tablet she brought with her.
The process took eleven minutes. Sora counted.
"Standard extension protocol recalibration," Han Seyeon said, disconnecting the cable. "The band sensitivity is set to the clinical baseline for Calamity-class monitoring."
"What are the rotational frequency parameters."
Han Seyeon looked up from the tablet. The brief assessment of someone who hadn't expected the question.
"Full-spectrum sensitivity at the clinical baseline." She said it the way technical personnel stated specifications: as information, not reassurance. "Previous monitoring had non-standard parameters on file for this band. The recalibration returns to clinical baseline."
She left.

Eleven months. If the second node's development had been running for four to six months at a suppressed rate, what had the first six months been?
Diagnostic assessment. Testing. The research team determining what the partial mutation involved, which architectural elements were developing, what the specimen's architecture looked like in its baseline state before they decided how to manage the progression.
Six months of baseline documentation. Four to six months of controlled developmental suppression.
The retained subject hadn't been a specimen in the sense of a passive sample. The research program had been actively managing their biology.

If she stood in the courtyard's northwest quadrant during the 0930-0940 window, the 6th node's directional axis would align with the intake. The monitoring band at clinical baseline sensitivity, watching for every counterclockwise rotation above threshold.
"I can't use the counterclockwise rotation," she said. "The band is recalibrated. Full-spectrum."
"I know." He'd received this information — she'd told him during the morning session note, the folded slip she'd left on the table. "Eunji is working on something. She contacted me this morning."
Eunji.
"She has access to the research program's protocol documentation through the disclosure record." Minho paused. "The disclosure she submitted to internal affairs listed the research program's methodologies as part of the reporting. Internal affairs retains her as the disclosure's originating researcher, which gives her an authorized copy of the documentation she submitted. She's been reading it."
"What does the protocol show."
"She needs to finish reviewing it. She'll have a summary by the 0800 visit tomorrow." He looked at his forearms. The compression sleeves covering the afternoon's situation: no forward healing session. The monitoring band at clinical baseline. The forward healing application would register. "She flagged one element from the retention protocol. Subject management uses a therapeutic application of modified healer-class mana at regular intervals."

"The research program has a healer performing therapeutic applications on the retained subject," Sora said.

"She needs the systems file," Sora said.
"She's working on it." He stood. The compression sleeves in place. The forward healing session's absence creating a clinical gap that the suppressant dose would cover — barely — through the afternoon. "Tomorrow. 0800."
The door. The handle pause.
"The day eighty-one window," he said. "The band is recalibrated. You can't use counterclockwise rotation. But the 6th node's passive reception doesn't require output." He looked at the door rather than at her. "What you need from tomorrow isn't to signal them. It's to listen."
"To learn if the modification parameters are something I can work around."
"Yes."

The word she was building toward wasn't signal.
