Kai Nakamura died doing what he loved: staring at a screen and eating expired convenience store ramen.

The heart attack came without warning—one moment he was debugging a loot table in Eternal Realms' latest expansion, the next he was watching his body slump forward onto the keyboard while his consciousness floated somewhere above it all.

*Huh,* he thought. *That's inconvenient.*

Death, as it turned out, was not what he expected. No tunnel of light, no choir of angels, no hellfire and brimstone. Just... loading.

A progress bar appeared in the darkness:

**TRANSFERRING SOUL DATA... 47%**

"What the—"

**TRANSFERRING SOUL DATA... 63%**

Kai had written that loading screen. He'd designed it for Eternal Realms' character creation system, a joke that players would see for exactly two seconds before being dumped into the tutorial zone.

**TRANSFERRING SOUL DATA... 89%**

This couldn't be real. He was having a stress-induced hallucination, his dying brain creating familiar images from the game he'd spent five years building. Any moment now, the paramedics would revive him and he'd wake up in a hospital with a stern lecture about self-care.

**TRANSFERRING SOUL DATA... 100%**

**WELCOME TO ETERNAL REALMS**

**INITIALIZING PLAYER: KAI_DEV_TEST_ACCOUNT_DO_NOT_DELETE**

**ERROR: DEVELOPER PERMISSIONS DISABLED**

**ERROR: ADMIN ACCESS REVOKED**

**WARNING: STARTING ZONE RANDOMIZED**

**RACE SELECTED: SLIME (COMMON)**

**CLASS SELECTED: N/A (SLIMES CANNOT SELECT CLASSES)**

**LEVEL: 1**

**HAVE FUN!**

Kai tried to scream, but he didn't have a mouth anymore.

He didn't have anything anymore—no hands, no feet, no body in any recognizable sense. He was a blob. A translucent, gelatinous blob about the size of a basketball, sitting in a forest clearing that looked disturbingly familiar.

*The Whispering Woods. Zone 01. Where players spawn to kill thousands of creatures exactly like me.*

A status window hovered in front of him—his own creation, designed to be intuitive and immersive. Now it was his only connection to understanding what he'd become:

**NAME: [UNNAMED]**

**RACE: SLIME**

**LEVEL: 1**

**HP: 10/10**

**MP: 5/5**

**SKILLS:**

**- Absorb (Passive): Consume organic matter to restore HP**

**- Bounce (Active): Jump short distances. Cost: 1 MP**

**TRAITS:**

**- Mindless: Cannot speak, form complex thoughts, or use equipment**

**WAIT. I CAN DEFINITELY FORM COMPLEX THOUGHTS.**

The trait description flickered, updating itself:

**- Mindless: TRAIT NULLIFIED. Unknown consciousness detected. Retaining full cognitive function.**

That was... unexpected. Kai had designed Eternal Realms' systems himself, but they weren't supposed to be adaptive. They definitely weren't supposed to recognize consciousness or nullify traits on the fly.

*What the hell is happening?*

Before he could process the question, the forest exploded with noise. Footsteps, voices, the familiar chime of the game's targeting system.

"Over here! I found one!"

Three players emerged from the trees: classic newbie loadout, starter equipment, the wide-eyed enthusiasm of people experiencing Eternal Realms for the first time. Two humans with swords, one elf with a bow.

And they were looking directly at him.

"Just a slime," the elf said, drawing an arrow. "Easy XP."

*No no no no—*

Kai tried to run, but slimes weren't designed for running. He managed an awkward bounce that carried him about two feet before the first sword sliced through his gelatinous body.

**HP: 10/10 → 4/10**

**CRITICAL HIT! SLIMES ARE WEAK TO SLASHING DAMAGE!**

*I KNOW THEY'RE WEAK TO SLASHING DAMAGE! I'M THE ONE WHO MADE THEM WEAK TO SLASHING DAMAGE!*

Another swing. Another chunk of health gone.

**HP: 4/10 → 1/10**

**WARNING: HEALTH CRITICAL**

The elf raised her bow. At this range, she couldn't miss. Kai was about to experience the player death he'd designed himself—a dramatic fade to black, a respawn at the nearest checkpoint, a minor XP penalty.

Except he wasn't a player. He was a slime. And slimes didn't respawn.

*THINK. You built this system. You know every exploit, every loophole, every broken mechanic.*

The arrow flew.

Kai activated Bounce at the last possible second, burning his remaining MP to hurl himself sideways. The arrow passed through the space where he'd been, embedding itself in a tree trunk.

"What the—it dodged?" The human swordsman looked confused. "Since when do slimes dodge?"

"Doesn't matter. It's got one HP left." The second swordsman raised his blade. "Finish it."

Kai bounced again, putting distance between himself and his would-be murderers. His MP was empty, his HP was critical, and he was a blob with no combat abilities trying to escape three armed players.

But he had something they didn't: five years of intimate knowledge of every broken, never-patched mechanic in Eternal Realms.

Including the one in this exact clearing.

He bounced toward the massive oak tree at the edge of the forest—the one the art team had modeled with a hollow at its base, originally intended as a secret treasure cache before they'd run out of time to implement it.

The hollow was still there. Still empty. Still exactly large enough for a basketball-sized slime to squeeze through.

And on the other side of the tree, invisible to players without the developer camera tools Kai had used a thousand times, was a gap in the terrain mesh. A place where the world's boundaries hadn't quite been sealed.

A place where slimes could fall through and clip into the underground cave system that wasn't supposed to be accessible until Zone 15.

Kai squeezed through the hollow, felt himself sliding through something that definitely shouldn't have been slideable, and dropped.

**ENTERING: CRYSTAL CAVERNS (LEVEL 15+ ZONE)**

**WARNING: AREA NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CURRENT LEVEL**

**WARNING: YOU ARE VERY LIKELY TO DIE**

*Tell me something I don't know.*

He landed in darkness, his HP slowly regenerating now that he was out of combat. Above him, he could hear the confused voices of the players:

"Where'd it go?"

"Slimes can't just disappear!"

"Forget it. There are more. Let's go."

Footsteps fading. Kai sat in the darkness of a cave system that would take players months to reach normally, trying to process the absurdity of his situation.

He was dead. Except he wasn't.

He was in Eternal Realms. Except it was real now.

He was a Level 1 slime in a Level 15 zone, with no weapons, no skills, and no way back to a world that had killed him.

A notification popped up:

**ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: "WRONG TURN"**

**Discover an area more than 10 levels above your current level through unconventional means.**

**REWARD: 100 XP**

**LEVEL UP! YOU ARE NOW LEVEL 2!**

Kai felt himself grow slightly larger, his stats marginally improving, his HP and MP pools expanding.

*Okay,* he thought. *This might actually be survivable.*

Another notification:

**NEW SKILL UNLOCKED: DETECT WEAKNESS**

**Identify enemy vulnerabilities. This skill is not normally available to slimes.**

**NOTE: Your unique consciousness allows access to skills beyond your race restrictions.**

Kai read the notification twice. The game was treating him differently—not as a mindless mob, but as something the system hadn't planned for. Something it was making room for as it went.

He was the developer. He knew the exploits, the hidden quests, the forbidden areas.

He just hadn't planned on needing any of them to stay alive.

**QUEST RECEIVED: "SURVIVE"**

**Objective: Don't die.**

**Reward: Continued existence.**

*Very helpful,* Kai thought. *Very, very helpful.*

He bounced deeper into the darkness, toward whatever came next.
