The scream came againâshorter this time, choked off by something. Pain or exhaustion, Kai couldn't tell. But the sound was undeniably human, and it was coming from somewhere below and ahead of him.
*A person. Down here, in the Deep Passage, where the recommended level is 18-22. Either a very strong adventurer having a very bad day, or someone who fell into the same kind of trap I did.*
Kai pushed himself to maximum bounce speedâwhich was still miserably slow, but adrenaline (or whatever slimes had instead of adrenaline) made it feel faster. The passage twisted, descended, opened into a series of interconnected chambers that he navigated by memory of the level design layouts.
The sound led him to a chamber he recognized: the Overflow, a natural reservoir where underground streams collected before draining deeper into the earth. In the game, it was an optional exploration area with a few treasure chests and some atmospheric scenery. Nothing critical, nothing dangerous.
Except someone had apparently made it very dangerous.
Kai rounded the final bend and took in the scene.
A girlâyoung, maybe sixteen or seventeen, wearing the tattered remains of what had once been decent traveling clothesâwas pressed against the far wall of the Overflow chamber. Her back was to the stone, her hands raised in front of her in a gesture that was half defensive spell-casting, half terrified prayer.
Blood streaked down her left arm from a deep gash. More blood matted her dark hair to her forehead. She was shaking, her breath coming in ragged gasps that echoed off the chamber walls.
Between her and Kai, blocking the only exit, crouched two Shadow Crawlers.
**SHADOW CRAWLER (Ă2) - LEVEL 18**
**HP: 520/520 (each)**
**WEAKNESS: Light-based attacks, fire, crystal resonance**
Shadow Crawlers were the Crystal Caverns' assassinsâsimilar to Cave Crawlers but adapted for the deeper, darker regions. Where Cave Crawlers were armored centipedes, Shadow Crawlers were sleeker, faster, and wrapped in a magical darkness that made them nearly invisible in low-light conditions. Their mandibles dripped with a paralytic venom that immobilized prey before consumption.
They were some of the most unpleasant creatures Kai had designed, and he was watching two of them close in on a wounded girl.
*I can't fight them. Level 18, 520 HP each. My Acid Spit does 8 damageâI'd need to hit them sixty-five times each. That's not a fight, that's a joke.*
The girl fired a spellâa bolt of pale light that struck the nearest Shadow Crawler and sent it skittering sideways. The creature hissed, its darkness-cloak flickering where the light had impacted, but the damage was minimal. The bolt had been weak, her mana clearly running dry.
**UNNAMED NPC - LEVEL 9**
**HP: 42/180**
**MP: 3/85**
**STATUS: BLEEDING, EXHAUSTED, TERRIFIED**
*Level 9. She's not a playerâshe's an NPC. A native of this world. What the hell is a Level 9 NPC doing in the Deep Passage?*
The Shadow Crawlers advanced. They moved with a coordinated patience that spoke of pack-hunting intelligenceâone approaching from the left, the other from the right, closing the angles of escape. The girl's back was to the wall. She had nowhere to go.
She fired another spell. This one fizzled before reaching its target, her hands glowing weakly before the light guttered out.
"No..." Her voice was raw, broken. "Please, no..."
The crawlers lunged.
Kai didn't think. Didn't calculate, didn't strategize, didn't run the numbers. He just moved.
**ACID SPIT ACTIVATED**
He launched himself forward, his body compressing and releasing in the fastest bounce he'd ever managed. At the apex of his arc, he spat a glob of acid directly at the lead Shadow Crawler's face.
The glob hit. Eight damage against 520 HPâinsignificant in terms of health reduction.
But the acid landed on the crawler's eyes.
**CRITICAL LOCATION: SENSORY ORGANS**
**EFFECTS: BLINDED (3 seconds), PAIN RESPONSE TRIGGERED**
The crawler shriekedâa piercing, chitinous screech that filled the chamber. It reared back, its mandibles clacking wildly, its multiple legs scrambling as it tried to clear the burning acid from its compound eyes.
Three seconds. That's all the blindness would last. Three seconds to do somethingâanythingâto change the dynamic of this encounter.
Kai landed between the girl and the crawlers. He was a basketball-sized blue blob facing two creatures that could eat him in a single bite. The absurdity wasn't lost on him.
The second crawler had stopped its advance, confused by the sudden appearance of a new variable. Shadow Crawlers were cautious by designâKai had programmed them to reassess when unexpected elements entered a combat scenario.
*Reassessment window: two to four seconds. Combined with the blindness on crawler one, I have maybe five seconds before they both attack.*
"RUN!" Kai tried to shout, but what came out was a wet squelching sound that conveyed nothing. He shifted to Chemical Emission, pumping out compounds at maximum intensityâthe Myconid equivalent of screaming.
The girl stared at him. A slime had just appeared between her and the monsters, spat acid in a crawler's face, and was now emitting a chemical cloud that smelled like urgent panic.
"Did that slime justâ"
"MOVE!" Kai shaped the word on his surfaceâSurface Manipulation straining to form readable letters through his translucent body. The letters were wobbly, barely legible, but the intent was clear.
The girl moved.
She pushed off the wall and sprinted toward the passage behind Kaiâthe one he'd entered through. The movement triggered the second crawler's attack response, and it lunged toward her retreating form.
Kai intercepted. Another Acid Spit, this time aimed at the crawler's leading legs. The acid hit the joints between chitin platesâthe same weak points Detect Weakness had identified on Cave Crawlers.
**DAMAGE: 8 Ă 2.5 (weakness modifier) = 20**
**EFFECT: JOINT CORROSION - MOVEMENT SPEED REDUCED 15% (10 seconds)**
The crawler stumbled, its front legs partially seizing as the acid ate into its joint tissue. It was still coming, but slowerâbuying the girl precious seconds to widen the gap.
The first crawler had cleared its eyes. Both creatures were now focused on Kai.
**TWO SHADOW CRAWLERS ARE TARGETING YOU**
**RECOMMENDED ACTION: FLEE**
**SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 12%**
*Twelve percent. Better than zero.*
Kai bounced. Not away from the crawlersâtoward them. Directly between the two creatures, exploiting the gap in their pincer formation. His small size was his only advantageâhe could fit through spaces they couldn't, navigate around their bodies faster than they could turn.
He bounced over the first crawler's back, his body briefly sliding across its chitin plates. The creature snapped at him, mandibles closing on empty air as he launched off its dorsal ridge and sailed toward the chamber's ceiling.
*Bounce. Maximum height. I weigh four poundsâthe skill's vertical reach is proportional to body weight. I can get higher than a human could.*
He hit the ceiling, his body flattening against the stone with a wet smack. Absorb activated automatically on contact with the stone surfaceâ
**CANNOT ABSORB: INORGANIC MATERIAL**
âbut the adhesion was enough to stick. Slime surface tension gripped the rock, holding him to the ceiling like a living decoration.
The crawlers circled below, their antennae sweeping the air. They knew he was above them, but their attack patterns weren't designed for ceiling-level targets. Shadow Crawlers were ground huntersâthey could climb walls but attacked horizontally, not vertically.
*This is the most pathetic tactical victory in the history of combat. I'm hiding on the ceiling from two bugs.*
But it was working. The crawlers' aggression timer was counting downâKai had programmed hostile creatures to disengage after a period of failed attacks. Without a reachable target, they'd lose interest and return to patrol behavior.
Unless they went after the girl instead.
One of the crawlers turned toward the passage the girl had fled through. Its antennae pointed in her direction, chemical sensors tracking the blood trail she'd left.
*No.*
Kai released his ceiling grip and dropped, aiming his fall directly at the tracking crawler. He activated Acid Spit mid-fall, the glob of acid impacting the creature's back at the same moment his body hit.
**DAMAGE: 20 (Acid Spit with weakness modifier)**
**DAMAGE: 1 (Fall impact - negligible)**
**STATUS: SHADOW CRAWLER AGGRO RESET TO: KAI**
The crawler shrieked and spun, trying to reach the slime now attached to its back. Kai gripped the chitin plates with his surface tension, riding the creature like the world's most terrified rodeo contestant.
*This is insane. This is absolutely insane. I'm rodeo-riding a murder centipede.*
The second crawler approached, mandibles ready, but couldn't strike without hitting its companion. Pack hunters had collision avoidance built into their AIâthey wouldn't attack through each other.
Kai crawled across the first crawler's back toward its tail, forcing it to spin in circles trying to reach him. The second crawler circled, looking for an opening. The dance was ridiculousâa four-pound slime keeping two Level 18 predators occupied through sheer unpredictability.
But it couldn't last. His MP was draining from acid spit usage, his HP was full but one solid hit would halve it, and the crawlers were adapting to his movements with each second.
*The passage. If I can reach the passage, the narrow Vein section is too small for Shadow Crawlers. They can't follow.*
He launched off the crawler's back with a maximum-power bounce, sailing toward the chamber exit. The crawlers reacted instantly, both lunging in pursuit. Mandibles snapped at his arcâone catching the trailing edge of his body.
**HP: 48/48 â 31/48**
**DAMAGE TAKEN: 17 (SLASHING + VENOM)**
**STATUS EFFECT: PARALYTIC VENOM - RESISTED (SLIME CHEMICAL RESISTANCE)**
*The venom doesn't work on me. Chemical resistance for the win.*
He hit the passage floor and bounced again, again, againâeach jump carrying him further from the chamber, deeper into the narrowing corridor. Behind him, the crawlers followed, their segmented bodies flowing through the passage with horrifying speed.
But the passage was narrowing. The crystal formations that had created natural bottlenecks in the Vein section were appearing again, restricting the path to widths that Kai could navigate but the much larger crawlers could not.
He squeezed between two crystal clustersâa gap of maybe eight inchesâand burst out the other side. Behind him, the lead crawler slammed into the gap, its body too wide to follow. It shrieked with frustration, mandibles reaching through the narrow space, snapping at empty air.
Kai bounced another twenty feet for safety and stopped, his body heaving with the slime equivalent of panting.
**HP: 31/48**
**MP: 7/28**
He was alive. Battered, drained, but alive.
And somewhere ahead of him in the passage, a Level 9 girl with 42 HP and a bleeding arm was stumbling through the dark.
*Right. The rescue isn't done yet.*
He bounced forward, following the faint trail of blood drops on the stone floor. The girl couldn't have gone farâshe was wounded, exhausted, and in a cave system she probably didn't know.
He found her around the next bend, collapsed against the wall. She was conscious but barely, her wounded arm pressed against her body, her eyes unfocused.
She saw him approach and flinched. "Stay backâ"
Kai stopped. He shifted his color to the warmest amber he could manageâthe Myconid color of safety and welcomeâand shaped letters on his surface.
**I HELP**
The girl stared at him. Blood loss and exhaustion were making her eyes glassy, but she could read.
"You... you're the slime that..." She trailed off, her head dropping forward. "I'm hallucinating. Slimes can't write."
**NOT HALLUCINATION. I HELP. YOU HURT.**
She laughedâa broken, desperate sound that turned into a cough. "A slime is offering me medical attention. Sure. Why not. Everything else today has been insane."
Her arm was bad. The gash ran from shoulder to elbow, deep enough to have severed muscle. Without healing magic or medical supplies, infection was inevitable and blood loss would eventually kill her.
Kai didn't have healing skills. But he had Absorbâand a slime body that was essentially a self-contained chemistry lab.
*Slime composition includes binding agents and antibacterial compounds. If I can produce a thin layer of my body's material and apply it to the wound as a seal...*
He bounced closer, ignoring her weak attempt to push him away, and extruded a thin membrane from his surfaceâa film of slime material, sticky and slightly warm. He pressed it against the wound.
**SKILL APPLICATION: ABSORB (REVERSED) - MATERIAL EMISSION**
**Applying antibacterial slime compound to external wound**
**Effect: Bleeding stopped. Wound sealed. Minor antibacterial protection.**
**NOTE: This is not a healing skill. Wound requires proper medical treatment.**
The girl gasped as the membrane made contactâit stung, apparentlyâbut the bleeding stopped almost immediately. The slime seal hardened slightly on contact with air, forming a translucent bandage over the gash.
"That... actually helped." She looked at him with wide eyesâbrown, Kai noticed, with flecks of amber. Young. Scared. But there was steel behind the fear. "What are you?"
Kai shaped his answer carefully on his surface:
**I AM KAI. LONG STORY. WHO ARE YOU?**
The girl leaned her head back against the wall, exhaustion winning its battle against consciousness.
"Mira," she whispered. "My name is Mira. I was looking for my brother. He disappeared into these caves three weeks ago."
Her eyes closed.
"Please don't let me die here."
Kai watched her breathing settle into the rhythm of unconsciousnessânot death, just sleep. The body shutting down to conserve resources, to heal what it could.
He settled beside her in the dark passage, a translucent blue guardian the size of a basketball, and waited.
*First the Myconids. Now a wounded girl looking for her lost brother. I came down here to find a developer room, and instead I'm collecting NPCs.*
He checked his status. HP regenerating slowly. MP regenerating. The girl's HP was stableâno further decrease.
*She said her brother disappeared three weeks ago. Into these caves. A Level 9 NPC going into a Level 15+ zone to look for someone.*
*That takes either incredible bravery or incredible desperation. Maybe both. Maybe neitherâmaybe she just loved her brother.*
The crystals pulsed with their steady heartbeat. Kai settled in and waited for Mira to wake up.
