The Azure Star Sword Sect's great formation had a name.
Most great formations did β the names accumulated from the battles where they'd been used, the way place names accumulated from what had happened there. This one was called the Heaven-Splitting Void Array, and the name came from the formation's primary effect: the complete suppression of qi movement within its boundary, which created, for the cultivators caught inside it, a condition identical to being in a qi-dead void. Every cultivator's cultivation became inert. Every technique became inaccessible. Movement remained, but nothing else.
In fourteen engagements where the Heaven-Splitting Void Array had been deployed, the outcome had been the same fourteen times.
It required all four of the Sword Sect's Dao Integration Elders to anchor it. The four anchor positions, once locked, created a stable field that could sustain for two hours. Two hours was longer than any formation or technique could resist a qi-void condition.
The Azure Mist Sect had one Dao Integration Elder.
---
The formation deployment began on the ninth day of the fifth month.
Zhao Bingwen had known it was coming from the courier route observations Chen Wuji had collated. He had informed the Sect Master. The Sect Master had convened a tactical assessment. The assessment had identified three options: retreat from the eastern approach before the formation locked, attempt to disrupt the anchor positioning before all four Dao Integration Elders were in place, or hold the current line and prepare for qi-void combat conditions.
The first option meant losing the eastern position permanently.
The second option required getting close enough to the anchor positions to disrupt them, which required moving through three Sword Sect formations to reach the Dao Integration Elders, which the assessment rated as likely to result in significant casualties.
The third option meant fighting without qi.
The Sect Master had chosen the second option β attempt disruption. Elder Wei and two of the senior combat Elders would move on the anchor positions from the western ridge. If two of the four anchors could be disrupted, the formation could not complete.
---
The operation required supply manifests.
This was the specific practical reality of war: before Elder Wei's team moved on the anchor positions, they needed the cultivation compound packages that sustained peak combat performance for Nascent Soul cultivators operating in high-resistance qi environments. The compound packages were assembled at the rear supply camp and moved to the forward staging depot by the morning of the deployment.
Chen Wuji had the manifest stack ready at the first bell.
He had also, because the front-line staging depot's secondary catalog was showing a shortage in the wound-stabilization compounds that the healing wing had been flagging for two weeks, prepared a supplementary delivery.
He loaded both stacks onto the courier cart.
He drove the courier cart.
The supply camp's available courier Elder was handling the western route delivery, which had a timing requirement. The outer disciples were on the compound monitoring rotation. The manifest delivery to the front-line depot was a single-stop run, straightforward, and he knew the route well.
He drove the courier cart to the front-line staging depot.
---
The staging depot was in the first valley of the eastern approach β below the ridge where Elder Wei's team was moving into position, above the anchor survey area where the Sword Sect's Dao Integration Elders had been observed setting up the formation's ground framework.
He arrived at the depot, transferred the manifest packages to the depot's receiving Elder, signed the delivery certification, and collected the empty return containers.
He looked at the routing path back to the supply camp.
The direct path went through the second valley. The second valley was the fastest route, twenty minutes shorter than the mountain pass alternative. He had driven it twice in the past week.
He took the direct path.
---
The Heaven-Splitting Void Array's anchor framework was at the second valley's center.
He did not see it until he was in the valley, because the Sword Sect's formation masters had set the visible markers at the third ridge β the part that was visible from Azure Mist's observation positions β and the anchor framework itself was below the ridge line, in the valley floor, built into the natural qi channels of the rock formation. It was not designed to be visible. It was designed to be functional.
He drove through the valley.
He was aware, in the particular unfocused way he was aware of qi environments during routine tasks, that the valley's ambient qi was unusually structured. Not elevated β structured. The way the qi in the pavilion's cultivation beds was structured: intentional, patterned, built for a specific purpose.
The purpose was suppression.
The framework had four anchor points at the cardinal positions of the valley floor. Three were active β Dao Integration signatures, elevated and focused, each one channeling into a circuit structure that was three-quarters complete. The fourth position was a gap. An incomplete circuit could not close the field.
The gap was at the valley floor's primary qi channel, the natural vein running through the rock formation.
The cart path crossed it.
He drove through the second valley.
He reached the valley's far edge. He turned the courier cart onto the mountain pass approach β the pass was slower but the return load was lighter without the manifests, and the pass road was smoother for the empty containers.
He drove back to the supply camp.
He put the cart away. He put the empty containers in the return storage. He went to the supply desk.
He picked up the daily routing log.
---
Forty minutes later, the formation team's emergency courier arrived at the rear supply camp.
He was a junior Elder named Kai, breathing hard, with the look of someone who had run from the eastern approach at full speed.
He said: "The formation. The Heaven-Splitting Void Array. Itβ" He stopped. He looked at Chen Wuji at the supply desk. He said: "The anchors are down."
Chen Wuji looked up from the routing log. "Elder Wei's disruption operationβ"
"No." Kai shook his head. "Elder Wei's team hadn't reached the anchor positions yet. The anchors went down on their own." He was still catching his breath. "All three active anchors. Simultaneously. One moment they were active, then they weren't. And the fourth position β the fourth Dao Integration Elder who was moving into position β stopped moving." He looked at Chen Wuji. "They're all in the medical tent. All four Sword Sect Dao Integration Elders. The formation master said β they channeled the formation qi back through the anchor circuit when the circuit destabilized, and the backflow β it went through the anchors into them." He paused. "All four."
Chen Wuji looked at the routing log.
He said: "The medical supply situation at the forward depot. I sent the supplementary wound-stabilization compounds with this morning's delivery."
Kai stared at him.
"The healing Elder will need those specifically," Chen Wuji said. "The Dao Integration meridian disruption response requires the four-compound stabilization protocol. Tell Elder Wei β or whoever is managing the medical response β that the correct compound package is in the supplementary delivery, not the primary manifest."
Kai continued staring.
"Go," Chen Wuji said.
Kai went.
---
Zhao Bingwen received the formation collapse report from Elder Wei's perspective one hour later.
Elder Wei's account: her team had been in position on the western ridge, ready to move on the anchor points, when all three active anchors collapsed simultaneously. The collapse generated a qi backflow through the formation's circuit β not a designed effect, a catastrophic resonance failure. The backflow traveled back to the channeling Elders at each anchor point. The fourth Dao Integration Elder, who had not yet fully locked his anchor, received a partial backflow. All four Elders were hospitalized. The fourth, with the partial lock, had the lightest injury. The three who had fully locked their anchor positions were in serious condition.
Formation Master Rui's technical assessment: the circuit had destabilized from the interior of the valley. Not from an external disruption β from within the formation framework itself. As if the foundation of the anchor framework had simply declined to hold the formation's structure.
Elder Wei's tactical assessment: the Heaven-Splitting Void Array was not going to be redeployed. With four Dao Integration Elders incapacitated, the Sword Sect had lost its primary formation capability. The war's tactical balance had shifted.
Zhao Bingwen read both reports in the supply tent.
He looked at Chen Wuji.
Chen Wuji was reviewing the eastern route delivery manifests for the sixth month. He had been working on this since Kai left.
"The second valley," Zhao Bingwen said.
"Yes."
"The courier route to the front-line depot passes through the second valley."
"Yes. I drove the delivery this morning." He did not look up from the manifests. "The valley was on the direct return path."
Zhao Bingwen looked at him.
"The formation," he said.
"I noticed the anchor framework," Chen Wuji said. "The circuit was incomplete. I passed through the incomplete circuit." He looked at the manifest. "I don't know what happened after I left. The courier arrived and told me."
"You drove through the anchor framework of a great formation."
"The anchors were not deployed at full capacity. The circuit was incomplete β the fourth anchor wasn't locked yet." He looked at the manifest. "I didn't think it would be a problem."
Zhao Bingwen looked at the manifests.
He said: "You noticed the anchor framework."
"It was very structured. The valley's ambient qi had a specific pattern." He found the notation he was looking for in the manifest. "The Sword Sect had been surveying that anchor point for two weeks. The courier route observations identified the formation tool activity. I drove through the valley to check the delivery time differential β the direct path is twenty minutes faster."
"And the circuit destabilized when you drove through it."
"Apparently." He made a notation. "The fourth anchor position hadn't locked yet. The circuit was at three-quarter completion. I drove through the incompletion point."
Zhao Bingwen was very still.
He said: "What do you mean when you say the circuit was incomplete."
Chen Wuji looked at the manifest.
He said: "The three active anchors were channeling into a circuit structure. The fourth position was a gap. The gap was at the valley floor's primary qi channel β the natural channel that runs through the rock formation." He paused. "I drove the cart through the channel."
"Through the primary qi channel of the anchor framework."
"It was the direct route." He looked at the manifest. "The mountain pass is twenty minutes longer."
Zhao Bingwen sat in the supply tent's secondary chair. He opened the traveling supplement.
He wrote for several minutes.
He wrote: *Entry one hundred and six. The Heaven-Splitting Void Array, the Azure Star Sword Sect's unbroken great formation, collapsed this morning. All four Dao Integration Elders who were anchoring it are hospitalized. The formation collapsed because the administrative Elder drove a supply cart through the valley where the anchor framework was set.*
He wrote: *He took the direct route. The mountain pass is twenty minutes longer. He had empty containers to return and the pass road is smoother for empty containers.*
He wrote: *I want to note, for the record, that I have now written one hundred and six entries in this archive and that the formation I just described β the Heaven-Splitting Void Array, unbroken in fourteen uses β was undone by a supply cart. By a man who was checking the delivery time differential.*
He wrote: *I do not know what this means. I am documenting it because it happened.*
He closed the supplement.
He looked at Chen Wuji.
He looked at the manifests on the supply desk.
He said: "The medical supply. The wound-stabilization compounds."
"In the supplementary delivery. Yes." Chen Wuji looked up. "The forward depot's healing Elder should have them."
"You prepared the supplementary delivery this morning."
"The shortage flag from the healing wing was two weeks old. It needed to be addressed." He paused. "The Dao Integration meridian disruption response is the four-compound protocol. If the healing Elder doesn't know the specific protocol, tell her β the compounds are in a blue-marked package."
Zhao Bingwen looked at him.
He said: "The supplementary delivery."
"Yes."
"You prepared it this morning. Before the formation collapse."
"The shortage flag was from two weeks ago."
Zhao Bingwen was quiet.
He was quiet for a long time.
He picked up the supplement and wrote one more line.
He wrote: *He had prepared the correct medical compounds for the injured Dao Integration Elders before the injury occurred. I have been keeping this record for twelve years. I still do not know what I am recording.*
