"Twelve months."
The briefing room was new. Not the Lee's Kitchen back room. The Yeouido district office that the Association had allocated for the Institutional Interface, with a proper conference table and a projector and chairs that had padding. The people around the table were new too. The original team plus Minsu, the Operations liaison, and two additional Association analysts that Director Yoon had assigned to the expanded task force.
Minhee had requested this briefing. Full leadership. All cells. The presentation was one slide. A graph. The x-axis was time. The y-axis was global mana density. The line climbed from left to right in a curve that bent upward like the inside of a bowl, accelerating as it approached a horizontal threshold line marked in red.
The threshold was labeled: COLLECTION EVENT TRIGGER.
The line crossed the threshold at the twelve-month mark.
"The saturation curve represents the rate at which global mana density approaches the trigger point for the collection mechanism," Minhee said. She was standing at the projector, her laptop connected, her tea on the table for the first time in weeks because the proper briefing room had a proper table where cups didn't get knocked over. "The collection mechanism is an entity that the infrastructure was built to counter. It harvests mana from the ecosystem when the density reaches a specific threshold. The previous collection event occurred approximately eight hundred years ago. The next one occurs when this line crosses this threshold."
"In twelve months," Minsu said. He was reading the graph with the expression of someone who'd been told he was overseeing a dungeon stability program and who was now looking at an extinction countdown.
"Twelve months. Revised from the initial sixteen-to-eighteen-month projection. The revision accounts for the Mapo breach's redistribution effect and the ongoing substrate disruption's impact on the distribution function."
Junseong sat at the far end of the table. Notebook open. He'd known about the timeline since the Pocheon debrief. He'd been planning for it since. The notebook in front of him contained the operational timeline he'd built during the preceding weeks: a twelve-month plan that divided the remaining time into phases.
"The ring circuit is the countermeasure," Minhee continued. She advanced the slide. The ring circuit schematic appeared: four keystones, the primary channel network, the secondary conduit backup, the watcher's amplification point at the northern formation. "When the collection event triggers, the ring circuit activates. The keystones fire in sequence: west, south, east, north. The activation signal travels through the channel network, building power at each keystone. The signal returns to the western keystone and the accumulated energy destroys the collection mechanism."
"The weapon works?" Director Yoon's voice. He'd come to the briefing himself, breaking the protocol that said the liaison handled operational meetings. The collection mechanism was above the liaison's classification.
"The weapon has been tested in a previous iteration," Minhee said. The careful phrasing that described the previous regressor's Cycle 4 result without explaining how they knew about it. "The previous test achieved ninety-three percent circuit completion. The collection mechanism was damaged but not destroyed. At ninety-three percent, the weapon wounds. At one hundred percent, the weapon kills."
"And we can achieve one hundred percent?"
"The secondary conduit backup pathway addresses the throughput limitation at the eastern keystone. The watcher entity at the Pocheon formation provides amplification that brings the eastern node to full capacity. With the watcher's participation, the ring circuit fires at one hundred percent."
"If everything works as designed."
"If every component is functional at the moment of activation. The keystones, the channels, the substrate bonds, the secondary conduits, and the watcher. All of them operational. All of them protected from the gardener's interference. Simultaneously."
The room absorbed that. Nine people looking at a graph that showed twelve months and a plan that required everything to go right during those twelve months in a war where nothing had gone right for eight hundred years.
Junseong stood. Walked to the projector. Advanced to his slide: the operational timeline.
"Three phases. Phase one: repair. Six months. Complete the substrate bond restoration. Bring the infrastructure integrity to eighty percent or above. Deploy counter-disruption batteries at all remaining vulnerable sites. Secure the keystones against gardener interference."
He pointed at the timeline's first block. Green. Six months of repair work that the operation was already doing, accelerated by the Association's resources.
"Phase two: preparation. Three months. Establish the watcher communication protocol. Coordinate the activation sequence timing with Minhee's throughput model. Run simulation tests on the secondary conduit pathway using low-amplitude signals. Identify and neutralize any remaining gardener capabilities that could disrupt the activation."
Second block. Yellow. The unknown. Nobody had ever prepared to fire the ring circuit with full organizational support before.
"Phase three: activation readiness. Three months. Position assets at all four keystone sites. Maintain containment at every dungeon gate in the metropolitan area to prevent pressure spikes during the activation window. Run the activation when the collection event triggers."
Third block. Red. The endgame.
"Total: twelve months. No margin. Every delay in phase one compresses phases two and three. Every gardener attack costs time we can't recover."
Minsu had his tablet out. Typing. The bureaucratic documentation of an operational timeline that the Association's systems didn't have a category for. He looked up.
"The Association has never authorized an operation of this scope. The resource requirements for phase one alone exceed the Research Division's entire annual budget. Phase two requires capabilities that don't exist in any Association division. Phase three is a military operation on a scale thatβ"
"The Association has never faced a collection event," Kwon said. She was at the table, the same seat she'd occupied at the Board meeting, the director who'd been managing this operation since before the institution knew it existed. "The resource requirements match the threat. The Board authorized continued operations. This is what continued operations look like."
"This is a twelve-month sprint toward activating a geological weapon that nobody has ever successfully used."
"Correct."
Minsu closed his tablet. Opened it again. Closed it.

The briefing lasted three hours. The questions covered every phase. Baek's engineering lead presented the repair timeline with schedules for each of the seventeen battery sites plus the new counter-disruption deployments. Junseong presented the Containment cell's keystone protection protocols. Soojin presented the Security cell's assessment of gardener activity since the substrate disruption: quiet on the surface, but Taehyuk's navigational modification still registered deep-substrate signals that the expanded sensor network couldn't characterize.
The gardener was still there. Still operating below the detection floor. Still working on whatever came after the substrate disruption. The six-week adaptation window had closed months ago. Whatever the gardener was building, it was building it in the geological layers that human instruments couldn't reach.
The watcher was still there too. Minhee's relay through Yeonhwa's portable unit, sent weekly to the Pocheon gate's signal repeater, confirmed the watcher's pulse at the northern formation. Weaker than before the second visit. The gardener's control of the Pocheon dungeon's ecology was nearly complete. The boss creature was fully turned. The garrison was gone. Only the watcher remained, in its crystal chamber, pulsing on a frequency that the gardener couldn't reach because the crystal was deeper than the channels the gardener had colonized.
The watcher was trapped. Alive. Waiting for the team to come back. Waiting for the activation that it had agreed to support.
ALLIANCE, it had said. The alliance held. From two hundred kilometers away, through a relay signal that bounced off a repeater and into a sensor unit and onto Minhee's laptop. The watcher's pulse confirmed: still there. Still willing. Still waiting.

Dohyun stayed in the briefing room after the others left. The projector still showed Junseong's timeline. Three phases. Twelve months. The color blocks stretching across the screen like a bridge being built from both ends, the two sides meeting at the red block where everything converged.
He looked at the timeline and ran it against the War Manual.
In the first timeline, nobody got this far. The infrastructure was never discovered. The ring circuit was never identified. The collection event happened at full strength, unchallenged, and the world broke.
In Cycle 4, the previous regressor had gotten to ninety-three percent and wounded the mechanism. The weapon had worked. Partially. The world had survived. Partially.
In this cycle, they had things no previous cycle had possessed. The watcher alliance. The organizational structure. The institutional support. The counter-disruption protocol. The complete data archive from eight hundred years of recorded infrastructure activity.
The question wasn't whether they could fire the weapon.
The question was whether 100% completion produced a different result than 93%. Whether seven additional percentage points of circuit completion turned "wounded" into "destroyed." Whether the math of eight hundred years of engineering held at the tolerances the architects had designed for.
Nobody in any cycle had achieved 100%. The architects had built the weapon and tested it in simulation and died before the test became real. The previous regressors had tried and reached 93% at best. The weapon's full-power output was theoretical. Nobody had ever seen what happened when the ring circuit fired at full capacity.
It might work. The math said it would. Minhee's throughput model said 100% completion generated enough feedback energy to overwhelm the collection mechanism by a factor of four. The margin was large. The architects had designed for a clean kill.
But the architects had also designed for scenarios they couldn't test, using specifications they'd derived from the first collection event's data, building a weapon against an enemy they understood in theory and had only observed once.
The architects had been brilliant. They'd built a weapon that survived eight hundred years, a backup system that survived sabotage, a geological ally that survived colonization. They'd been engineers and planners and builders of the first order.
They'd also been the last survivors of a civilization that the collection event had destroyed. Their data came from the event that killed most of their people. Their weapon was built from grief and analysis and the desperate engineering of a society that knew it might not survive to see its work completed.
Desperate engineering sometimes works. It also sometimes doesn't.
Dohyun looked at the timeline. Twelve months. Three phases. Zero margin.
He picked up the marker from the briefing room's whiteboard tray. Wrote on the board, below the projected timeline:
