The Flux Realm was impossible to describe in terms that made sense.
Energy was visible hereâstreams of power flowing through the environment like rivers through landscape, except the rivers changed direction constantly, merged and separated without pattern, and occasionally reversed their flow entirely.
The ground beneath Kai's feet shifted between solid and liquid and gaseous states, following rules that seemed random but were probably just incomprehensible. The sky was a kaleidoscope of competing frequencies, each one representing a different energy type that didn't exist in any stable dimension.
His Boundary Sense was useless here. The dimensional membrane existed, but it was *different*âthick and thin simultaneously, stable and unstable at the same time. The conflicting signals made his head pound.
"Status report," Resonance's voice came through the communicator.
"I'm in. The environment is..." Kai searched for words. "Chaotic. But not like the Shattered Expanse. There are patterns here. I just don't understand them yet."
"Can you identify the Emergence risk?"
Kai extended his awarenessâcarefully, filtering out the overwhelming noise. Somewhere in this realm, dimensional instability was building toward potential manifestation. His job was to find it before it broke through.
The energy streams around him shifted. One of them touched his position, and suddenly he understood something.
The Flux Realm wasn't chaotic. It was *overorganized*. Every energy flow, every state transition, every frequency shift was connected to every other. A system so complex it looked like randomness from the outside.
And the Emergence risk was part of that system.
"I think I've found it," Kai reported. "There's a convergence pointâmultiple energy streams meeting at a specific location. The buildup there is creating pressure against the dimensional membrane."
"Can you stabilize it?"
"I need to understand the system first. If I intervene incorrectly, I could make things worse."
Kai began moving toward the convergence point, studying the energy flows as he went. Each stream had its own characteristicsâcolor, frequency, intensity. They interacted according to rules he was slowly beginning to grasp.
Red streams amplified. Blue streams dampened. Gold streams redirected.
When they met, they combined according to predictable (if alien) mathematics.
The convergence point was where dozens of streams intersectedâa knot of energy so dense it was nearly visible as solid matter. The pressure against the dimensional membrane was immense, building with every moment.
"I see the problem," Kai said. "The energy flows are converging naturally, but they're being prevented from dispersing. Something's blocking the outflow channels."
"Can you clear the blockage?"
"Maybe. But I need to understand what's blocking them first."
He examined the obstruction. It wasn't debris or damageâit was a deliberate structure. Someone had built this. Someone had arranged the energy flows to create this buildup.
"Resonance, this isn't natural. Someone engineered this convergence."
"What? Who would deliberately create an Emergence risk?"
"I don't know. But the blockages are artificial. They're designed toâ" Kai stopped, sudden realization hitting him.
The Flux Realm's energy wasn't random. It was *power*. Raw dimensional potential, concentrated and directed.
And someone was trying to harvest it.
"I think this is an energy extraction operation. Someone's using the Emergence pressure as a collection mechanism." Kai examined the structure more closely. "If I clear the blockages, the pressure releasesâbut so does whoever's harvesting the energy."
"Council protocols say prevent Emergence first. Investigation second."
"Understood. But I want to know who's doing this."
He began carefully examining the blocking structures. They were sophisticatedâbuilt from dimensional materials that didn't exist in stable realities, designed by someone with deep understanding of Flux Realm physics.
Then he found the signature.
Familiar. Too familiar.
The blocking structures had been built by another rift wielder.
"Resonance, we have a problem. This isn't Council work. This isâ"
The energy streams shifted. All of them. Simultaneously.
Someone had noticed his examination.
Someone was responding.
