Recovery took three weeks.
The flux energy had left deeper marks than the physicians initially realized. Kai's ability to process dimensional energy had been alteredânot damaged exactly, but changed. His attunements responded differently now, their effects modified by residual flux patterns that had integrated into his system.
"Think of it as scar tissue," the lead physician explained. "Your dimensional processing capabilities have healed, but they've healed around the foreign material. The new configuration is functional, but not identical to the original."
"What does that mean practically?"
"Your Boundary Sense may perceive frequencies you couldn't before. Your rift ability may behave differently at high energy levels." The physician shrugged. "Honestly, we don't know. You're unprecedentedâa being who survived flux integration when every model predicted fatality."
Unprecedented. Kai was getting used to that word.

The investigation into the mysterious rift wielder yielded limited results.
Council analysts confirmed what Kai had observedâthe energy harvesting operation was sophisticated, long-running, and designed by someone with deep understanding of dimensional mechanics. The blocking structures had been in place for years, gradually building pressure toward the Emergence threshold.
"They were planning something big," Resonance concluded during the briefing. "The energy they were collectingâwe're talking about enough power to destabilize multiple dimensions simultaneously."
"Why? What's the purpose?"
"Unknown. But rift wielders with that much power have historically..." Resonance hesitated.
"Destroyed themselves or gotten destroyed by the Council," Kai finished. "The standard pattern."
"The standard pattern, yes. But this one seems to be planning something more specific." Resonance pulled up dimensional maps. "The energy flows they were harvesting connect to a nexus pointâa location where multiple dimensional barriers intersect. If they're planning to use that power there..."
"They could tear open the barriers between multiple realities at once."
"Or collapse them. Or transform them entirely." Resonance's voice was grim. "We need to find this rift wielder before they complete whatever they're planning."
Kai thought about the attack. The precision of it. The way the flux streams had converged on his position the moment he'd discovered the operation.
"They knew I was there. They responded to my presence specifically."
"You were identified as a threat to their operation."
"Or they knew who I was already. Knew my capabilities. Targeted me personally." Kai stood. "This might not be random. I need more information about other active rift wielders."
"That data is highly classifiedâ"
"I'm an ally of the Architect. My clearance should cover it."
Resonance considered, then nodded. "I'll make the request."

The files arrived two days later.
The Council maintained records on every documented rift wielder across the catalogued multiverse. Most were historicalâbeings long since destroyed or contained. But a handful of entries described active individuals whose status remained uncertain.
Kai read through them with his Archive's Gift, absorbing data at ten times normal speed.
Most were irrelevant. Rift wielders in distant sectors, operating far from Earth or the Flux Realm. Their capabilities, while significant, didn't match the sophistication of the energy harvesting operation.
One entry stood out.
**DESIGNATION: Echo**
**STATUS: Active, Location Unknown**
**NOTES: Former rift wielder whose ability evolved into unclassifiable form approximately 400 years ago. Operates outside Council jurisdiction. Has developed techniques for dimensional energy manipulation that exceed documented capabilities. Considered non-hostile but unpredictable.**
**WARNING: Do not engage without Council authorization. Echo's capabilities include dimensional combat techniques that have defeated Council operatives in previous encounters.**
Echo. The contact who'd warned him about extraction damage. The network builder who'd offered alternatives to Council cooperation.
Kai had been communicating with one of the most dangerous beings in the multiverse.
But the file described Echo as evolved from rift wieldingâpast tense. If she'd lost her original ability, she couldn't have created the energy harvesting operation.
Unless the files were incomplete.
Or unless there was another explanation entirely.
---
"You've been researching Echo."
The Architect's voice materialized without warning. Kai looked up from his data terminal to find the ancient being's presence filling his quarters.
"The files mention her. She seemed relevant to the Flux Realm investigation."
"Echo is always relevant. She has been a persistent variable in Council operations for four centuries." The Architect's form solidified. "You have been in contact with her."
"Before my alliance with you. Not since."
"You maintained communications through your wanderer companion. I am aware." The Architect didn't sound angryâmerely factual. "I chose not to intervene because the contact seemed... educational."
"Educational how?"
"Echo represents one path a rift wielder can take. Evolution into something beyond your original nature. She has survived where others failed, not through Council cooperation but through transformation so complete that the categories no longer apply."
Kai thought about the flux integration he'd experienced. The changes to his dimensional processing. The ways he was already becoming different from what he'd been.
"Is that what's happening to me?"
"It is happening to all rift wielders, eventually. The question is direction." The Architect moved closer. "Echo chose isolation and transformation. Others chose power and destruction. The Council offers cooperation and containment. You are exploring something newâalliance without absorption. Whether it leads to success or failure remains to be seen."
"The rift wielder in the Flux Realm. Is it Echo?"
"No. Echo's current capabilities don't include the techniques used in that operation." The Architect paused. "But she may know who does possess them. Her network reaches places the Council cannot."
"You want me to contact her."
"I want you to gather information. The method is your choice." The Architect's form began to fade. "Be careful, Kai Aether. Echo is not an enemy, but she is not entirely an ally either. Her goals intersect with mine only occasionally."
The presence withdrew.
Kai sat alone, processing. The Architect was essentially authorizing him to break the contact restrictions he'd agreed toâor at least, not prohibiting it.
Trust building. Or manipulation.
Or both.
He reached out through the dimensional whisper frequencies Vex had taught him. It was time to have a real conversation with Echo.
