The Silver Shadows made contact three days later.

Ren was alone in their room at the Silent Rest. Kira had gone to pursue a lead about the mysterious woman from the caravan. He was deep in meditation, a technique he'd developed to organize Varen's memories without being overwhelmed by them, when the window opened without a sound.

A figure slipped through, moving with the fluid grace of someone who had spent a lifetime learning to be invisible. Black clothing, covered face, and eyes that reflected no light even though afternoon sun poured through the window.

"Ren Ashford." The voice was feminine, soft, professionally neutral. "Don't reach for your weapon. I'm here to talk."

Ren's hand had been moving toward his staff without conscious thought. He forced himself to relax, to appear calm despite his racing heart.

"I don't know that name."

"Of course you do. It's yours." The figure moved further into the room, circling to block the door. "We've been watching you since you arrived in Silverfall. Interesting resume. Killing Lord Varen, absorbing his fragment, traveling with the woman who planned his assassination." She tilted her head. "Not many people can claim to have ended the Obsidian Order's tyranny."

"You're well-informed."

"Information is our business. Among other things." She produced a familiar token, the shadow coin Brix had given them, and set it on the table. "You've made an impression. Brix speaks well of you. Says you have potential."

"What kind of potential?"

"The kind we can use." She pulled down her face covering, revealing features that were striking rather than beautiful: sharp cheekbones, pale skin, eyes the color of deep water. "My name is Vesper. I'm a recruitment specialist for the Silver Shadows."

"Recruitment. So this is a job interview?"

"Something like that." Vesper settled into the room's single chair, uninvited, as if she owned the space. "The Shadows are always looking for capable people. You've demonstrated capability. The question is: what do you want in return?"

Ren considered his options carefully. He could play coy, negotiate, try to extract maximum advantage from the situation. That's what Kira would do, what Varen's memories suggested.

But he was tired of games within games. Time was limited, fragments were waiting, and the longer he spent playing political chess, the more likely it was that something would go wrong.

"I want access to Cassius Thorne."

Vesper's expression didn't change, but something shifted behind her eyes. "Thorne is a client. We protect his interests."

"I know. And I'm not asking you to betray him. I just need..." He paused, searching for the right framing. "He has something that belongs to me. Something taken without my consent. I want it back."

"You're a Collector." It wasn't a question. "We suspected as much. The fragment compass on your palm, the resurrection capability, the enhanced physical attributes." Vesper leaned forward. "Lord Varen's fragment merged with him after he killed a previous Collector. Now it's part of you."

"Yes."

"And you want Thorne's fragment."

"I need it. To survive."

Vesper was silent for a long moment, calculating. "The Shadows don't take sides in Collector business. It's not profitable, and it tends to end badly for everyone involved." She held up a hand before Ren could respond. "But we also don't interfere. If you can acquire Thorne's fragment through your own means, without involving us directly, we won't stop you."

"That's not very helpful."

"It's not supposed to be helpful. It's supposed to be neutral." Her smile was thin. "However, I can offer you something valuable. Information about Thorne: his schedule, his habits, his security arrangements. The kind of intelligence that would take weeks to gather on your own."

"In exchange for?"

"Your service. Three contracts, to be completed within the next month. Jobs that suit your particular skills." Vesper's eyes gleamed. "Nothing too extreme. Retrieval operations, escort duties, the occasional intimidation task. Standard contractor work."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then you're on your own. The Shadows won't help you, but we won't hinder you either." She shrugged. "Your choice."

It wasn't much of a choice. Ren needed intelligence on Thorne, needed the Shadows' implicit approval to operate in their territory, needed any advantage he could get. Three contracts was a fair price for that access.

"I accept."

"Excellent." Vesper rose and moved toward the window. "Your first assignment will arrive tomorrow. Don't disappoint us, Ashford. The Shadows give second chances, but not third ones."

"Wait." Ren stood. "The information about Thorne, when do I get it?"

"After you complete your first contract. Trust is earned, not given." She paused at the window. "One more thing. We're aware of your investigation into the caravan raids. Tread carefully there. You're touching interests that extend beyond Silverfall."

"Whose interests?"

"Discover that for yourself. Consider it a bonus assignment." Her smile was the last thing he saw before she slipped through the window and vanished into the afternoon.

---

Kira returned an hour later, her expression caught between excitement and frustration.

"I found her," she announced, dropping onto the bed. "The woman from the caravan. She's alive, hiding in the Warrens. Scared out of her mind, but alive."

"Who is she?"

"That's where it gets interesting." Kira sat up, her eyes bright. "Her name is Elena Corvus. She's a former employee of House Meradin, one of the major merchant families in Silverfall. She was fleeing with documents that prove House Meradin has been conspiring with outside interests to destabilize the city's trade."

"The Red Wolf's employer."

"Exactly. House Meradin hired the mercenaries to raid caravans belonging to their competitors. Weaken the competition, buy up their assets when they fail, expand their monopoly." Kira shook her head. "It's a classic play, but the scale is unprecedented. They've cost the city hundreds of thousands in lost commerce."

"And Elena has proof?"

"She was a bookkeeper. She discovered the conspiracy by accident and tried to expose it. When that failed, she ran with copies of the evidence." Kira's expression darkened. "House Meradin wants her dead, obviously. The documents she carries could ruin them."

Ren thought about Vesper's warning, interests that extend beyond Silverfall. House Meradin was a major merchant family, but they weren't the top tier. Someone had to be backing them, protecting them, enabling their conspiracy.

"This is dangerous," he said. "We're getting involved in something that could get us killed."

"We're already involved. The moment we recovered Sera's goods and gave Brix that intelligence, we became players." Kira met his eyes. "The question is: what do we do with what we know?"

"We use it." The thought crystallized as he spoke. "Elena's documents could expose House Meradin. That exposure would benefit their competitors, including Cassius Thorne."

"You want to give Thorne evidence of his rival's conspiracy?"

"I want to make him grateful enough to talk to us directly. To let his guard down." Ren's smile was grim. "You said it yourself, manipulation is a tool. This is manipulation that actually helps people. Elena gets protection, Silverfall gets rid of a conspiracy, and we get access to Thorne."

Kira was quiet for a moment. "That's a lot of moving pieces."

"It is. But I had a visit while you were gone." He told her about Vesper, about the Silver Shadows' offer, about the contracts he'd agreed to complete.

"Three contracts," Kira repeated. "And they'll give you intelligence on Thorne after the first one."

"That's the deal."

"Then we need to handle Elena's situation carefully. If she becomes Shadow business, we lose control of the narrative." Kira stood and began pacing. "We protect her independently. Gather her evidence, verify its authenticity, then approach Thorne directly with the offer."

"And if Thorne refuses?"

"Then we sell the information to someone else. But I don't think he'll refuse." Her smile was calculating. "House Meradin has been undercutting Thorne's business for years. He'll want revenge. And we'll be the ones who gave it to him."

Ren nodded slowly. The plan was complex, risky, and relied on multiple variables aligning correctly. But it was the best opportunity they'd had since arriving in Silverfall.

"Let's do it."

The pieces were falling into place.

Now they just had to make sure they didn't fall apart.
