The second Shadow contract was, as Vesper had promised, more difficult.

*Lord Erik Stormwind. Manor in the Heights. Retrieve personal correspondence from his study. Guards equipped with fragment-enhanced weapons. Extreme discretion required.*

"Stormwind," Kira said, reading over his shoulder. "One of the noble houses that predates the merchant era. Old money, old connections, old enemies. His father was instrumental in crushing the last major rebellion."

"Fragment-enhanced weapons?"

"Rare, but they exist. Varen pioneered the technique, infusing weapons with fragment energy to make them more effective against fragment holders." Her expression was grim. "If those guards catch you, death might not be temporary."

The implications settled over Ren like a cold weight. He'd grown almost comfortable with resurrection, the knowledge that death was a setback rather than an end. But fragment-enhanced weapons could damage souls directly, preventing or complicating resurrection.

"Why would a noble lord have such weapons?"

"Why does anyone have weapons?" Kira shrugged. "Protection. Power. The ability to threaten things that can't normally be threatened." She paused. "The Shadows want that correspondence, which means it contains something valuable. Something Stormwind wants to keep secret."

"Any idea what?"

"Could be anything. Political arrangements, financial improprieties, personal scandals. The nobles are almost as dirty as the merchants." She folded her arms. "Are you sure you want to do this?"

"I need the Shadows' trust. Without it, I can't access their intelligence networks."

"There are other ways to investigate The Patron."

"Not as effective." Ren studied the contract again. "I'll be careful. Scout the manor first, identify the security patterns, find weaknesses. This doesn't have to be a blind assault."

"It also doesn't have to be a solo operation." Kira met his eyes. "I'm coming with you."

"You're not a contractor."

"No, but I'm someone who's spent years learning to bypass exactly this kind of security." Her smile was sharp. "Consider it practice for whatever we face when we finally corner The Patron."

Ren wanted to argue, but he recognized the futility. Kira had made up her mind, and changing it would require more time than they had.

"Fine. But if things go wrong, you get out. Don't risk yourself for my mission."

"I'll make that decision when the time comes." She started gathering gear. "Now let's go look at a manor."

---

The Stormwind manor was a fortress disguised as a home.

They spent two days watching it from various vantage points, mapping guard rotations, identifying entry points, cataloging the fragment-enhanced weapons that several guards carried with obvious pride.

"Six guards with enhanced weapons," Kira reported. "Rotating shifts, overlapping coverage. The study is on the second floor, east wing. Three locks on the door, plus a magical ward that I can't identify from this distance."

"Entry options?"

"The roof is lightly guarded. Most security focuses on ground level. If we can get up there, we might access the second floor through a window." She traced routes on a rough map she'd sketched. "The challenge is the enhanced weapons. If they catch us, even a scratch could be fatal."

"Then we don't let them catch us."

They planned for another day, rehearsing movements, timing approaches, preparing contingencies. By the third night, Ren felt as ready as he was going to get.

"Remember," Kira said as they approached the manor wall, "the goal is the correspondence. Not revenge, not justice, not proof of noble corruption. We get in, grab the papers, and get out."

"I understand."

"Good. Because you have a tendency to complicate simple missions."

"I saved someone's life."

"You did. And it nearly got us both killed." But she was smiling. "Just try to keep the heroics to a minimum tonight."

They scaled the outer wall using climbing gear Kira had acquired from her network of dubious contacts. The guards below continued their patrols, oblivious to the shadows passing above them.

The roof was easier than expected. The nobles apparently believed no one would be foolish enough to approach from above. Ren and Kira moved across the tiles with careful precision, avoiding the few skylights that might reveal their presence.

The window to the study was locked, but Kira's skills made short work of the mechanism. Within minutes, they were inside.

The study was rich with the accumulated wealth of generations. Tapestries on the walls, antique furniture, shelves lined with books that probably cost more than most people earned in a lifetime. A large desk dominated the center of the room, its surface covered with papers.

"Check the desk," Kira whispered. "I'll watch the door."

Ren moved quickly, scanning documents with practiced efficiency. Most were mundane: financial records, social correspondence, the tedious paperwork of nobility. But then he found them.

Letters. Private letters, sealed with a symbol he recognized from Thorne's archives.

The Patron's symbol.

His hands trembled as he read. The letters were communications between Stormwind and The Patron, discussing arrangements, payments, and—

"Someone's coming." Kira's voice was sharp. "We need to move."

Ren stuffed the letters into his pack, along with several other documents that looked promising. They'd barely reached the window when the study door opened.

Lord Erik Stormwind entered, flanked by two guards with fragment-enhanced blades.

"I thought I heard something," Stormwind said, his voice calm. "Rats in the walls, perhaps. Or..."

His eyes locked onto Ren.

"Ah. A more interesting kind of vermin."

Kira moved first. Her daggers flashed, catching the light as she engaged the nearer guard. The fragment-enhanced blade sliced toward her; she dodged, barely, the weapon leaving a trail of darkness in the air.

Ren faced the second guard. His staff came up in a defensive pattern, but the guard's enhanced weapon cut through it like paper. The staff fell in two pieces, useless.

*Fragment damage*, he realized. *The weapons can destroy anything with fragment energy, including my equipment.*

He dove aside as the blade descended, rolling across the floor, grabbing a heavy candlestick from a nearby shelf. It wasn't much, but it was something.

"You're the Collector everyone's been talking about." Stormwind hadn't moved from the doorway. "The one who killed Lord Varen. I must admit, I expected someone more impressive."

"Expectations are often disappointed."

"Indeed they are." Stormwind smiled coldly. "Kill him. But keep him alive long enough for questions. I want to know who sent him."

The guard pressed his attack. Ren retreated, blocking with the candlestick, feeling each impact jar his arms. The fragment-enhanced blade left dark marks on the metal, gradually destroying it.

Kira was struggling with her opponent. Despite her skill, the enhanced weapon gave the guard an enormous advantage. Every near-miss left trails of damage in the air, and she was running out of room to maneuver.

*We're going to lose*, Ren realized. *We're outmatched and outnumbered and—*

The window behind him exploded inward.

A figure dropped through the shattered glass, dark-clothed, face covered, moving with lethal grace. In three heartbeats, both guards were down, their fragment-enhanced blades clattering uselessly on the floor.

Vesper pulled down her face covering. "Time to go. Now."

"But—"

"*Now.*" She grabbed Ren's arm and pulled him toward the window. Kira followed without prompting, seizing the opportunity to escape.

Stormwind shouted orders. More guards pounded up the stairs. But by the time they reached the study, the three intruders had vanished into the night.

---

They ran until the manor was far behind them, finally stopping in a shadowed alley to catch their breath.

"You were watching," Ren gasped.

"We're always watching." Vesper's voice was cold. "You were supposed to be careful. Supposed to avoid detection."

"I was careful. Stormwind knew we were coming."

"Because you've been asking questions. Making waves. Drawing attention." She stepped closer, her eyes hard. "The Shadows protect their contractors, but we can't protect you from your own stupidity."

"He had letters from The Patron." Ren pulled the documents from his pack. "Stormwind is connected to whoever's been manipulating the city."

Vesper's expression flickered. "The Patron?"

"A presence behind dozens of conspiracies over the past forty years. House Meradin's backer. And apparently, House Stormwind's patron as well." He thrust the letters toward her. "Look at the seal. Look at the content. This is bigger than one noble house."

She took the letters, scanned them quickly. Her face was unreadable, but something shifted in her posture.

"Where did you hear about The Patron?"

"Cassius Thorne. He's been tracking them for decades."

"Thorne." Vesper was quiet for a long moment. "He's been trying to identify The Patron for as long as I've been with the Shadows. We thought it was paranoia, an old man searching for an enemy that didn't exist."

"It exists. And it's embedded in Silverfall's power structure."

"That's... concerning." Vesper handed the letters back. "Keep these. Show them to Thorne. But be careful who else you trust. If The Patron has connections to Stormwind, they may have connections to others as well."

"Including the Shadows?"

Her eyes met his, and for the first time, Ren saw uncertainty there.

"I don't know. And that's what worries me."

She turned and vanished into the darkness, leaving Ren and Kira alone with their stolen intelligence and their many questions.

"Well," Kira said after a moment, "that was interesting."

"That's one word for it."

"I have other words, but they're less polite." She took his arm. "Come on. Let's get somewhere safe before anything else tries to kill us tonight."

They disappeared into Silverfall's shadows, carrying secrets that could change everything or destroy them.

The web was larger than anyone had suspected.

And Ren was beginning to realize that he might be the fly, not the spider.
