"You've been here since five," he said. Not a question.

"What did you find?" he said.
She turned the monitor toward him.

She expanded the view.

He looked at the pattern.

"The objective requires all of them," she said. "No single city's ability distribution could accomplish it. The convergence β seventeen nodes operating together β combines capabilities that you can't combine any other way."
"What's the objective?" he said.
She was quiet for a moment. The kind of quiet she used when she had a conclusion but wasn't certain enough to state it directly yet.
"The Awakening Event was designed," she said. "Someone engineered a population-level probability field deployment to select and amplify 3% of humanity's cultivation potential. The purpose of that selectionβ" She looked at the seventeen-city map. "If you curate the selected population for complementary capabilities, distributed globally, with a convergence mechanism designed to coordinate themβ"
"You're building something that operates at a species level," he said.
"You're building a response to something that operates at that scale," she said.
He looked at the map for a long time.
The Awakening Event as preparation. The 3%, not a random gift to humanity but a targeted capability set. Seventeen nodes with complementary abilities, distributed to ensure global coverage, designed to operate together when the convergence activated.
Preparation for what?
"The system," he said. "The architect designed it. He triggered the Awakening Event. He built the compensatory protocol. He's been watching for six years." He looked at her. "He's not building this for himself."
"The design is too large for personal gain," she said. "No individual benefits from seventeen nodes distributed globally converging toward a shared objective. This is β infrastructure."
"Infrastructure for what."
She looked at her monitors. The model. The evidence she'd been building for four years, now complete enough to be undeniable.
"I don't know yet," she said. "But the evidence indicates the architect knows what's coming. The Awakening Event was preparation. The 3% selection was recruitment. The convergence architecture is the operational structure." She paused. "Something is coming that requires this level of preparation."
He sat with this.
The system's notes had always been specific and limited β task by task, arc by arc, with glimpses forward but never the full picture. The architect watching through Song Meiqi's observer feed, patient, letting the design develop.
Something is coming.
"The architect's timeline," he said. "He triggered the Awakening Event six years ago. He built the network, placed the nodes, created the compensatory protocol. He's been running Phase 1 and Phase 2 to build up the primary beneficiary β me β to a threshold where I can coordinate Phase 3." He looked at the map. "He's been building this for six years with a specific deadline in mind."
"Or a specific triggering condition," she said.
"What's the condition?"
She looked at the model. "I don't have enough data. But the rate of preparation β six years of intensive architecture β suggests the triggering condition is not in the distant future."
He thought about the Level 5 threshold. Six to eight months at current Phase 2 output rate. Phase 3 activation after Phase 2 completion.
Six to eight months before Phase 3 activated.
And the architect had been building for six years, which suggested the triggering event β whatever required the network's response β was in the same general timeframe as Phase 3 completion.
"He designed it to be ready when it's needed," he said.
"Yes," she said.
The room ran quiet. The instruments, the model, the morning light starting to reach the window.
"The paper," he said. "The evidence you've built β it establishes that the Awakening Event was designed. It doesn't establish why."
"That's honest," she said. "The paper will state what the evidence proves and not more."
"Xu Mingzhi's framework," he said. "The collaboration. When you publish with him, you have the theoretical mechanism and the empirical evidence."
"Eighteen months to publication, maybe two years," she said. "After proper peer review and methodology scrutiny."
"The claim is extraordinary," he said.
"The evidence standard has to match it," she said. Not defensively β just the standard she held herself to.
He looked at her. The researcher who'd been building this for four years, who'd received her data curated by an architect who'd designed the path without falsifying the destination. The evidence was real. The conclusions were hers. And the patience it had taken to build both without having the full picture β that was hers too.
"You're going to spend the next two years finishing proof of something that will change how humanity understands the Awakening Event," he said.
She looked at him. "Yes."
"While also being the research foundation for Phase 3's operational planning."
"Also yes," she said.
The flat precision she brought to large things the same as small things. He found this, consistently, more useful to him than enthusiasm would have been.
"The archive data," she said. "Liu Qiaoyun's recall. I want to go through it again today β there are three specific sections I want to cross-reference against the cultivation school records."
He came to stand at the instrument console. The configuration she'd been using for the morning's work, the data streams running.
"Then let's work," he said.
They worked for three hours.

He thought about two years of tutoring mathematics and two jobs through university. The specific discipline of solving problems with no margin for error under sustained pressure.

"As a research collaborator," he said.
