The fragment's power surged through Wei Long like fire through dry tinder.

It wasn't cultivation energy—not the clean, ordered flow he'd spent years learning to channel. This was something older, more primal. Raw authority that didn't ask for permission, simply claimed what it touched.

His broken cultivation pathways shattered completely—and then reformed.

The pain was immense, but Wei Long had experienced enough agony in recent days that he could observe it without being overwhelmed. The fragment was rebuilding his spiritual foundation from the ground up, replacing orthodox structures with something designed for a different kind of power entirely.

When it ended, he was different.

"Wei Long." Yue's voice held wonder and concern. "Your aura..."

He examined himself with senses that had become sharper, more precise. The void energy he'd absorbed from the Stalker was still there, but integrated now—woven into pathways that could channel multiple types of spirit energy simultaneously. And above it all, the Crown fragment pulsed with authority that made the very air feel different.

"The Crown grants dominion," Hollow explained, its empty form still watching. "The ability to command spirits, claim territories, establish order. What you feel is the first taste of what the Spirit King wielded at his height."

"This is just one fragment. One of seven."

"One of seven, yes. Each piece grants different aspects of the Crown's full power. Void grants you spatial manipulation, the ability to walk between realms, to create and destroy distance at will." The entity paused. "It also grants you authority over void-type spirits specifically."

Wei Long extended his awareness, testing the fragment's claims. The warped space around Hollow's domain responded to his will—distances became suggestions rather than facts, and the impossible geometry suddenly made sense.

"I can control this place."

"You can influence it. Full control would require more fragments, more development." Hollow's emptiness rippled with something like amusement. "But yes—you've taken your first step on the path to becoming something more than mortal."

Yue moved closer, examining him with concern. "Your bond with me feels different. Stronger, but also... further away somehow."

"The Crown's authority complicates spirit contracts. You're still bonded—nothing can break what you chose—but the fragment's power sits between you." Wei Long focused, adjusting something in his new spiritual structure. "Is that better?"

"Yes. Much." She relaxed slightly. "I was worried for a moment that the power would change what we have."

"Nothing changes that. Not sects, not crowns, not anything." He met her silver eyes. "You followed me into the Abyss. That's not something I'll ever forget."

---

They left Hollow's domain with more than just the fragment.

The Void Guardian had agreed to provide guidance toward the next fragment—not out of loyalty or obligation, but because Wei Long's success served Hollow's own interests.

"The Seven Forgotten have waited millennia for someone capable of reuniting the Crown," Hollow explained as they walked through newly-stable corridors. "Each of us guards our fragment against the unworthy, but we also long for completion. The Crown was meant to be whole."

"The Spirit King broke it. Why?"

"Because he recognized what it was doing to him. The Crown's power is seductive—it offers dominion over spirits, control over territories, authority that no being should possess alone." Hollow's voice carried old regret. "He shattered it to save himself. And then he disappeared into the deepest Abyss, where even we cannot follow."

"Is he still alive?"

"Something of him remains. Whether it's alive in any meaningful sense..." The entity trailed off. "That's a question you may eventually have to answer yourself."

The information changed what Wei Long thought he knew. The Crown wasn't just power—it was temptation. Something that had corrupted even its original creator. If he gathered all seven fragments, he would face the same challenge.

"How do I avoid his fate?"

"By remembering what power is for. The Spirit King created the Crown to unify the Spirit Realm, to establish peace between warring territories. He lost sight of that purpose and began pursuing power for its own sake." Hollow focused on him intently. "You've already demonstrated the ability to face your own darkness. Hold onto that capacity for self-reflection. It may be all that saves you."

Not encouraging advice.

But honest, which Wei Long appreciated.

---

Abaddon met them as they emerged from Hollow's territory.

"You survived." The countless eyes blinked. "More than survived—you've claimed the first fragment. I can feel its power radiating from you."

"You knew what I was walking into."

"I knew it was dangerous. I didn't know you'd succeed." The entity's darkness rippled. "My offer from before stands—alliance, mutual benefit. You need power to leave the Abyss eventually. I can help you gather it."

"What do you want in return?"

"Entertainment initially. But now..." Abaddon's eyes focused on the Crown fragment's energy. "Now I want to see what you become. The Spirit King was the last being to wield that power, and he changed the structure of both realms. Whatever you're becoming, it will be equally significant."

"You want to be part of something significant."

"I want to matter. I've been guardian of outer territories for ten thousand years, watching others pass through while I remained static." The entity's voice held something like yearning. "You represent change. I want to be part of that change."

Wei Long considered the offer. Abaddon was powerful—far more powerful than anything he could currently command. Having such an ally would accelerate his development, increase his chances of gathering the remaining fragments.

But trusting an Abyss entity carried obvious risks.

"I'll accept your alliance," he said finally. "But on equal terms. Partnership, not service. You help me because we share goals, not because I've bound you."

"Partnership." Abaddon's darkness seemed to settle with satisfaction. "I accept those terms. Where do we go first?"

"The next fragment. Hollow indicated it's in territory controlled by something called Burn—a fire-type guardian in a region that shouldn't be able to burn."

"Burn's domain. Dangerous, but accessible with your new abilities." The entity's eyes gleamed. "This will be interesting."

Wei Long looked at his strange alliance—a lunar spirit, a void guardian who'd tested him, and a chaos entity who'd guided him. Not the companions he would have chosen months ago.

"Let's go," he said. "We have a crown to assemble."
