The Azure Dragon Palace's delegation arrived at the border between realms.
Three Elders of significant cultivation, accompanied by a retinue of disciples and their contracted spirits. They moved with the careful confidence of powerful beings entering unknown territoryâaware of potential threats but unwilling to show weakness.
Wei Long met them personally.
"Crown bearer." The lead Elder, a woman named Azure Cloud, studied him with eyes that had seen centuries. "Your declaration has complicated the cultivation world."
"Complications were the intent."
"So we gathered." She examined the spirits accompanying himâbeings that should have been subordinate but radiated the confidence of equals. "Your claims about partnership appear genuine. These spirits aren't serving under compulsion."
"No one in my coalition serves under compulsion. That's the point."
"A point that threatens everything the sects have built."
"Everything the sects have built is based on exploitation. I'm not threatening civilizationâI'm threatening a system that benefits the powerful at everyone else's expense."
Azure Cloud nodded slowly. "That's the argument my more progressive colleagues have been making for generations. The traditionalists have always suppressed it."
"And now?"
"Now there's an alternative. Something tangible to point to, not just theory." She met his eyes directly. "The Azure Dragon Palace wants to understand your model more thoroughly. If it functions as you claim, we may be willing to adopt it."
"What about the Seven Great alliance?"
"The alliance is already fracturing. Your declaration forced every sect to take positions, and those positions don't align as neatly as the surface unity suggests." A thin smile crossed her face. "The Heavenly Spirit Sect is demanding aggressive action. The Jade Spirit Valley is counseling caution since one of their prominent scouts defected to your side. The Vermillion Phoenix Temple is eager for conflict but lacks support for unilateral action."
Chen Bai's analysis was proving accurate.
"What does the Azure Dragon Palace want?" Wei Long asked directly.
"Independence. The alliance has always constrained usâforcing support for initiatives we didn't agree with, subordinating our interests to collective decisions dominated by the Heavenly Spirit Sect." Azure Cloud's voice hardened. "We're willing to leave the alliance, formally adopt your partnership model, and support your challenge to the existing order."
"In exchange for?"
"Guarantees. Territory, autonomy, protection from retaliation. If we break with the alliance, we need assurance that you can actually defend us against the consequences."
A reasonable requestâand exactly what Wei Long had hoped to hear.
---
The negotiations took three days.
Chen Bai proved invaluableâhis understanding of sect politics, his ability to identify pressure points and leverage opportunities, turned discussions that might have stalled into productive exchanges.
The final agreement was comprehensive. The Azure Dragon Palace would formally withdraw from the Seven Great alliance. They would adopt Wei Long's partnership model for all future spirit contracts, while existing contracts would be transitioned over time. In exchange, the coalition would guarantee their territorial integrity and provide support against any aggression from the remaining alliance sects.
"This breaks the alliance's unity," Lin Mei observed after the delegation departed. "Once one sect defects, others will consider it."
"That's the plan. The sects' power comes from their collective actionâtheir ability to suppress any challenge through combined force. If I can fracture that collectivity..." Wei Long smiled. "Each sect becomes a separate problem rather than an insurmountable combined threat."
"Liu Chen won't wait for his alliance to collapse around him. He'll actâprobably soon, probably aggressively."
"I'm counting on it."
Lin Mei studied him with concern. "You want him to attack?"
"I want him to reveal his true nature. Right now, Liu Chen is a prodigy who's done nothing wrong publicly. His crimes against me are my word against the sect's official story." Wei Long's voice hardened. "But if he attacks me directly, if he violates cultivation world protocols to try to destroy me... everyone sees what he really is."
"You're using yourself as bait."
"I'm using myself as a demonstration. Liu Chen will come for me because he can't allow me to existâmy survival proves his rise was built on murder and theft. When he attacks, I'll defeat him. And when I defeat him, the stolen spirits will return to their original contractor."
"You're certain they'll choose you?"
"They already are choosing me. The Crown's authority has been calling to them since my declarationâthey know I'm alive, know I'm coming for them. Liu Chen's control is weakening with every passing day." Wei Long examined his hands, feeling the Crown's power pulsing through him. "He's holding onto something that was never meant to be his. Eventually, it will slip away."
---
Liu Chen's response came five days later.
Not a declaration or a negotiationâan attack. A strike force composed of the Heavenly Spirit Sect's elite, led by Liu Chen himself, aimed directly at Wei Long's position in the Spirit Realm.
"He's coming through the Dragon Depths," Sovereign reported. "Using water territory to approachâapparently believing your authority there is weakest."
"He doesn't know about our alliance."
"He doesn't know about many things. But he'll learn." The Dragon King's massive form radiated anticipation. "Shall I intercept?"
"No. Let him come to me directly." Wei Long turned to face the direction of the approaching threat. "This ends between us, with everyone watching."
The stolen spirits' energy flickered in the distanceâpowerful signatures that Wei Long recognized intimately. The Fire Hawk, the Stone Turtle, the Lightning Wolf. Beings who had chosen to contract with him years ago, now forced to serve his betrayer.
They were coming home.
One way or another.
"Everyone to positions," Wei Long commanded. "This is what we've been preparing for."
