The spirit's emergence started as a faint glow beneath Mei's skin.

Light poured from her, soft at first, then blinding. Her features blurred, overlaid by something older. For a terrifying moment, Lin Feng thought the spirit was consuming her, taking over completely.

Then her eyes opened, and he saw both of them looking back at him.

*Young Devourer*, the spirit's voice resonated through Mei's throat, though her lips moved with it. *We finally meet properly.*

"Elder Hua mentioned you once," Lin Feng said carefully. "A remnant of the Jade Lily Sect."

*Remnant. Such an unkind word.* The spirit/Mei smiled with an expression that was simultaneously familiar and alien. *I was Elder Qian Xue in life. Fire cultivator. Soul binder. The one who taught Mei's mother what little she knew of our arts.*

"You've been watching me through her."

*Watching and evaluating.* The dual presence shifted closer. *The girl loves you, Devourer. Truly loves you, not the distraction of youth or the desperation of circumstance. Because of that, I'm willing to share what I've hoarded for centuries.*

"The soul binding technique."

*More than that. My entire essence, everything I preserved when our sect fell.* The spirit's eyes gleamed with ancient fire. *Mei has been carrying me since childhood, but she's only accessed fragments. Tonight, I give her everything.*

Lin Feng felt his jaw tighten. "What does that mean for her?"

*It means she becomes more than human. Like you, but through a different path.* The spirit's voice softened. *Do not fear, Lin Feng. I have watched you both for months. I know what you are to each other, what you could become together.*

"And what's that?"

*Complements. The Devourer's hunger matched by the Healer's restoration.* Mei's body glowed brighter. *Tonight, we forge a bond that cannot be broken. Are you prepared for what that means?*

Lin Feng looked at Mei, at the spirit that wore her face, that spoke with her voice, that carried her devotion.

"Yes," he said.

The light consumed them both.

---

The soul binding was not what Lin Feng expected.

He'd anticipated pain, perhaps, the merging of two beings into something connected. Instead, he found himself floating in darkness, surrounded by stars that weren't stars.

*These are souls*, a voice explained. It was Mei's voice, but richer, deeper. *Every living thing you've consumed. Every being whose essence now fuels your power.*

Lin Feng looked closer and realized she was right. The lights around him weren't random. They were organized, grouped by type. Wolves here. Boars there. The vast constellation of the Phoenix. The smaller but brighter points of the heavenly scouts.

"I never realized there were so many."

*You've consumed thousands of beings, Lin Feng. Lesser creatures, mostly, but each one added to your power.* Mei appeared beside him, or something that looked like Mei, though her form flickered with fire that matched the spirit's presence. *And each one left traces of itself behind.*

"The personality fragments the ghosts warned me about."

*Yes. They're quieter now, integrated more fully than they were. But they're still there, waiting for moments of weakness to assert themselves.* Her hand found his. *This is where I'll anchor you. In this space between souls.*

"How?"

*Watch.*

She raised her other hand, and light flowed from her fingers. Not consuming light like the hunger, but something gentler. Restorative. The wolf-souls calmed, their feral edges smoothing. The Phoenix's overwhelming presence dimmed to something manageable.

Lin Feng felt the change in his own psyche, a clarity he hadn't experienced since consuming his first beast.

"You're... organizing them."

*More than that. I'm creating pathways, channels through which their power can flow without overwhelming your identity.* Mei's smile was gentle. *The spirit showed me how. It's what soul medicine was always meant for.*

"I thought soul medicine was about healing."

*Healing bodies, yes. But also healing minds. Souls.* Her grip tightened. *You've been carrying so much weight, Lin Feng. Fighting the hunger every moment, struggling to stay yourself. From now on, you won't have to fight alone.*

"Because you'll be here."

*Because we'll be bound. My soul to yours, my clarity to your chaos.* Her eyes met his across the infinite space of his inner self. *This is what I'm offering. Not just partnership, but fusion at the deepest level.*

This wasn't a simple alliance or even a romantic commitment. Their fates, their very existences, would be intertwined permanently.

But looking at Mei, feeling her presence in this space where nothing could be hidden, he knew there was only one answer.

"I accept," he said.

The darkness erupted into light.

---

When Lin Feng opened his eyes, he was back in the cave.

His body felt different, more stable, more balanced. The hunger was still there, but distant, filtered through something that made it easier to ignore. And at the edge of his awareness, constant and comforting, he could feel Mei's presence.

She lay beside him, eyes closed, breathing steadily. Her skin held a faint luminescence, and her features seemed sharper, more refined.

"Mei?"

Her eyes opened. They were still the same color, but they held depths they hadn't possessed before.

"I'm here." Her voice was her own, though traces of the spirit's resonance lingered. "I'm... different."

"Different how?"

"I can feel you." She reached out and touched his face. "Not just physically. I can feel your hunger, your determination, your fear. Everything."

"Is that uncomfortable?"

"It's overwhelming." She smiled. "But also wonderful. Like I've been seeing in black and white my entire life, and now there's color."

Lin Feng helped her sit up, studying her with new senses. The bond between them was visible now, a thread of golden light connecting their souls, pulsing with shared essence.

"The spirit?"

"Still here, but quieter. It gave everything it had to make this work." Mei touched her chest. "I carry its knowledge now. Its techniques. Its memories of the Jade Lily Sect in its glory days."

"That's a lot to process."

"I'll manage." Her expression grew serious. "How do you feel? The binding was supposed to stabilize your transformations."

Lin Feng turned his attention inward. The riot of consumed essences that had always fought for dominance in his soul was calmer now, organized into something almost harmonious.

"Better," he admitted. "Much better. The Phoenix's power was threatening to overwhelm me. I could feel it pushing against my control. Now it's integrated. Part of me instead of fighting to be all of me."

"Good." Mei stood, testing her new body. "Then we should move. The binding took longer than expected. We've lost almost a full day."

"You need rest—"

"I rested while the spirit worked." She extended her hand. "Come on, Devourer. We have a Tiger to hunt."

---

They approached the White Tiger's domain at sunset.

The mountains here were different from anything Lin Feng had seen. Stark peaks of white stone that seemed to glow in the fading light. Snow covered everything, even in what should have been summer. The air was sharp, clean, and utterly cold.

"The Tiger's influence," Mei said. "Metal and killing intent. It's shaped this entire region into a weapon."

Lin Feng could feel what she meant. The land itself seemed hostile. Sharp edges everywhere, treacherous footing, winds that cut like knives. Even the snow felt wrong, more like ground glass than frozen water.

"The Protocol says the Tiger doesn't negotiate."

"I remember. Pure combat power, no subtlety." Mei's expression was grim. "The original tried to approach it peacefully. The Tiger killed three of his companions before he escaped."

"Then we don't approach peacefully." Lin Feng drew Devourer's Fang. "We go in hard and fast, before it can prepare."

"That's suicide."

"It's our only option." He turned to face her. "The binding has made me stronger. I can feel it. And you can support me now in ways you couldn't before."

"I'm not a fighter."

"You're a soul healer. While I'm engaging the Tiger physically, you can work to destabilize its essence, make it easier to consume." Lin Feng's eyes gleamed. "It's never faced a coordinated attack before. Every other threat has been single combatants it could overwhelm with raw power."

"And you think two of us will make a difference?"

"I think two of us, bound at the soul level, sharing power and perception... I think that might be exactly what this situation needs."

Mei studied him for a long moment. Through their bond, he caught the edges of her fear, her doubt, but underneath it, trust.

"If this goes wrong..." she began.

"Then we die together. But at least we tried."

She laughed, a sharp sound in the cold air.

"You're insane."

"Probably." Lin Feng smiled. "But you bound your soul to mine anyway. What does that make you?"

"Equally insane." She took his hand. "Let's go kill a divine beast."

---

The Tiger found them before they found it.

One moment, they were climbing through a mountain pass. The next, the path ahead was blocked by something that made even the Phoenix seem small.

The White Tiger was massive, easily fifty feet at the shoulder, with fur like polished metal and eyes that burned with killing intent. Every muscle coiled tight beneath that gleaming hide, built for violence and refined through millennia of combat.

It looked at Lin Feng and saw prey.

*Another Devourer*, its voice resonated in his mind. Not like the Dragon's communication. Rawer. More primal. *I killed the last one who tried to claim my power. I will kill you too.*

"The original escaped," Lin Feng said.

*He ran. You will not be so fortunate.* The Tiger tensed, muscles bunching beneath metallic fur. *I can smell the Phoenix on you. Can taste the heavenly scouts you consumed. You've grown strong, human.*

"Strong enough to face you."

*Strong enough to die.* The Tiger bared its fangs. *Show me what you've learned.*

It moved.

Lin Feng had thought the Phoenix was fast. He'd been wrong.

The Tiger was speed itself, a blur of white metal that crossed the distance between them in less than a heartbeat. Its claws, each longer than Lin Feng's arm, carved through the space where his head had been.

He was already moving, flame wings carrying him sideways, Devourer's Fang flashing out in a counter—

The Tiger blocked it with a paw.

The impact sent shockwaves through the mountain. Snow exploded from surrounding peaks. And Lin Feng, despite his enhanced strength, was thrown backward like a toy.

*Is that all?* The Tiger's contempt was palpable. *The Phoenix must have been weaker than I thought.*

"Not yet," Lin Feng growled.

He felt Mei's presence through their bond, her power reaching out, probing the Tiger's essence for weaknesses.

*There*, she sent. *Its right foreleg. The metal essence is thinner there. An old wound that never fully healed.*

Lin Feng stored the information and launched himself back into battle.

This time, he didn't try to match the Tiger's speed. Instead, he used the Phoenix's fire, erupting into flames that forced even the divine beast to back away.

*Fire? You think to burn me with fire?* The Tiger laughed. *I've walked through volcanoes that make your flames look like candles.*

"I'm not trying to burn you."

Lin Feng's fire intensified, filling the pass with blinding light. Under its cover, he moved. Not toward the Tiger, but around it.

The divine beast sensed the feint too late.

Lin Feng's blade found the weak point Mei had identified. Devourer's Fang bit deep, and more importantly, began to consume.

The Tiger roared, the first sound of genuine pain Lin Feng had ever heard from a divine beast.

*YOU DARE!*

A paw slammed into Lin Feng, sending him crashing into the mountainside. Bones broke. Blood sprayed. Through the agony, he felt Mei screaming through their bond.

But he didn't let go of the sword.

He kept consuming.

"I dare," he whispered through blood-soaked lips. "I dare everything."
