The heavenly army descended on the seventh day.
Lin Feng and Mei were crossing a mountain range when the sky split open. One moment, the clouds were normal. The next, a tear appeared in reality itself, and beings of pure light poured through like water from a broken dam.
There were hundreds of them. Maybe thousands. Celestial soldiers in armor that gleamed with divine essence, arranged in formations that spoke of millennia of martial discipline. At their head flew generals on beasts of cloud and lightning, their faces stern with righteous fury.
And behind them all, visible through the tear in reality, the Jade Emperor himself looked down from his throne.
Lin Feng had seen fragments of this in the scouts' memories. The Emperor's face, distant and serene. But seeing him in person was different. The weight of his presence pressed down on the world like a physical force, making the mountains themselves seem to bow.
"YOU DARE."
The voice echoed across dimensions. Every bird within miles took flight. Every beast within hundreds of miles froze in terror. The air trembled with the Emperor's displeasure.
"YOU DARE TO CONSUME THAT WHICH BELONGS TO HEAVEN. TO KILL THAT WHICH WE CREATED. TO RAISE YOUR HAND AGAINST THE DIVINE ORDER."
Lin Feng felt Mei's fear through their bond, sharp and cold. His own heart was pounding, adrenaline flooding a system already overtaxed by the journey. This was what they'd been preparing for, but the reality of facing heaven's full might was different from the abstract concept.
"THE PUNISHMENT FOR YOUR CRIMES IS DEATH. NOT JUST YOUR DEATH, BUT THE DEATH OF EVERYTHING YOU HOLD DEAR. YOUR COMPANION WILL BE UNMADE. YOUR SOUL WILL BE SCATTERED ACROSS THE COSMOS. EVEN THE MEMORY OF YOUR EXISTENCE WILL BE ERASED."
"Impressive speech," Lin Feng said, and was surprised to find his voice steady. "Did you practice it?"
Silence. The celestial soldiers shifted uneasily. The generals exchanged glances. Apparently, nobody had ever responded to the Jade Emperor with sarcasm before.
"YOU MOCK ME?"
"I mock the hypocrisy." Lin Feng spread his flame wings, rising to meet the heavenly army at eye level. "You speak of divine order, but what order is there when you abandon an entire realm to suffer? What justice when divine beasts slaughter humans without consequence?"
"THE AFFAIRS OF MORTALS ARE BENEATH HEAVEN'S CONCERN."
"Then heaven's concern is beneath mine."
He felt the moment the Emperor's patience snapped. The celestial army surged forward, a wave of divine power aimed at crushing a single defiant mortal.
Lin Feng smiled.
And attacked.
---
The battle began in the sky.
Lin Feng tore through the first wave of soldiers like a comet through paper. His flame wings left burning trails across the heavens. Devourer's Fang drank deep of celestial essence, growing stronger with every strike. The Tiger's killing intent made each blow precise and lethal.
Behind him, Mei worked her own kind of warfare. Soul medicine techniques designed to heal could also disrupt, and she used them to sever the connections between soldiers, to interrupt the formations that gave the celestial army its strength. Where Lin Feng was fire and fury, she was precision and disruption.
*Too many*, she sent through their bond. *We can't fight them all.*
*We don't have to.* Lin Feng consumed another soldier, feeling celestial essence add to his reserves. *We just have to survive long enough.*
*For what?*
*For our ally to arrive.*
---
The Azure Dragon emerged from the eastern sea like a god awakening from slumber.
Its presence was unmistakable. A serpentine shape of water and wisdom coiled through the sky with impossible grace. Where it passed, the celestial soldiers' attacks became confused, their divine essence disrupted by the Dragon's ancient power.
*You called*, the Dragon's voice resonated in Lin Feng's mind.
*I called. Will you help?*
*I told you I would prepare for the war that's coming.* The Dragon's eyes gleamed with something like amusement. *Did you think I meant to sit idle while you faced heaven alone?*
The Dragon struck, and celestial soldiers died.
---
The battle shifted.
With the Dragon's intervention, the heavenly army's advantage began to erode. Lin Feng and Mei fought their way toward the generals, consuming everything in their path. The Dragon held the main force at bay, its mastery of water essence turning the soldiers' formations into chaos.
But the Jade Emperor was not idle.
"YOU WOULD ALLY WITH THE DEVOURER?" His voice boomed across the battlefield. "YOU WOULD BETRAY YOUR FELLOW DIVINE BEASTS, YOUR CREATORS, YOUR VERY NATURE?"
*My nature is my own*, the Dragon replied. *And my creators abandoned this realm long ago. I owe heaven nothing.*
"THEN YOU WILL SHARE THE DEVOURER'S FATE."
Power gathered around the tear in reality. The Jade Emperor rose from his throne, light blazing from his form, and Lin Feng understood that the true threat was only now revealing itself.
The Emperor was coming down personally.
---
When the Jade Emperor fully manifested in the mortal realm, reality buckled.
Space warped around his form, unable to contain his presence. Time seemed to stutter, moments stretching and compressing in ways that made Lin Feng's enhanced senses reel. This was power beyond anything he'd experienced, beyond anything he'd imagined.
"DID YOU TRULY BELIEVE YOU COULD CHALLENGE HEAVEN?" The Emperor's voice was no longer amplified. It didn't need to be. It simply was, resonating through every particle of existence. "DID YOU THINK YOUR STOLEN POWER COULD MATCH THAT WHICH CREATED THE WORLD?"
Lin Feng gathered himself. The Phoenix's fire. The Tiger's killing intent. The Serpent's patience. Every beast he'd consumed, every power he'd absorbed, all of it focused into a single point.
"I didn't think," he said. "I knew."
He struck.
---
Their clash shattered mountains.
The shockwave from their first exchange leveled forests for a hundred miles. The ground split, new valleys forming from the pressure of their battle. The celestial army and the Dragon continued their own war overhead, but all of it was secondary to the duel between mortal and god.
Lin Feng was faster than he'd ever been, stronger than he'd ever imagined. The integrated essences worked together perfectly, giving him capabilities that should have been impossible. He matched the Emperor blow for blow, consumed divine essence with every strike, grew stronger even as he fought.
But the Emperor was still stronger.
Each exchange cost Lin Feng more than he gained. The divine power flowing from his opponent was limitless, the reserves of a being who had ruled heaven since before humanity existed. Lin Feng was a candle trying to outlast the sun.
*We need to retreat*, Mei sent desperately. *You can't win this fight!*
*Not yet*, Lin Feng replied. *But I don't have to win. I just have to survive.*
He reached deep, finding reserves he didn't know he had. The hunger roared, demanding more, always more. He fed it everything he could, consuming the ambient essence of the battlefield, absorbing power from fallen soldiers, drawing on the energy of the earth itself.
And slowly, impossibly, he began to hold his ground.
---
The Emperor's expression shifted from contempt to surprise.
"YOU GROW STRONGER." There was something like respect in the divine voice. "EVEN AS WE FIGHT, YOU GROW STRONGER. THE DEVOURER'S PATH IS MORE POTENT THAN I REMEMBERED."
"Ten thousand years of refinement," Lin Feng gasped. His body was screaming with strain, pushed far beyond any reasonable limit. "The original God Eater left notes. I've improved on his techniques."
"AND YET YOU REMAIN MORTAL. LIMITED. FINITE." The Emperor's attacks intensified. "NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU CONSUME, YOU WILL NEVER MATCH ETERNAL DIVINITY."
"Maybe not." Lin Feng deflected a blow that would have destroyed him utterly. "But I don't have to match you. I just have to make you bleed."
His blade found its mark.
Devourer's Fang, enhanced by three divine beasts' worth of consumed essence, pierced the Jade Emperor's perfect form.
Divine ichor flowed.
The battlefield went silent.
---
The Emperor looked at the wound with something approaching wonder.
"IMPOSSIBLE. NOTHING FROM THE MORTAL REALM CAN HARMβ"
"Not anymore." Lin Feng pulled the blade free, feeling celestial essence flooding into him. "The rules have changed, your majesty. The Devourer's Path has evolved beyond what you remember."
For a long moment, the Emperor simply stared at him.
Then, incredibly, he laughed.
"SO THE MORTALS HAVE FINALLY PRODUCED SOMETHING WORTHY OF ATTENTION." The Emperor stepped back, the wound already healing. "VERY WELL. THIS CHANGES NOTHING, BUT IT DOES MAKE THINGS MORE INTERESTING."
"You're retreating?"
"I AM RECONSIDERING." The Emperor's eyes gleamed. "YOU HAVE INJURED ME, DEVOURER. SOMETHING THAT HASN'T HAPPENED IN A VERY LONG TIME. THAT DESERVES A MORE CONSIDERED RESPONSE."
He turned toward the tear in reality.
"ARMIES, RETURN TO HEAVEN. THIS BATTLE IS CONCLUDED FOR NOW."
The celestial soldiers began withdrawing, their formations reforming as they rose toward the rift. The Dragon continued to harry them, but made no move to prevent their retreat.
"YOU HAVE EARNED A RESPITE," the Emperor said, pausing at the threshold. "USE IT WISELY. WHEN I RETURN, IT WILL BE WITH THE FULL MIGHT OF HEAVEN AT MY BACK. NOT AN ARMY. THE ENTIRE CELESTIAL REALM."
"I'll be ready."
"NO. YOU WON'T." The Emperor smiled, cold and certain. "BUT IT WILL BE AMUSING TO WATCH YOU TRY."
He vanished into the rift.
The tear sealed behind him.
And suddenly the battlefield was quiet.
---
Lin Feng collapsed.
His body simply gave out, the strain of fighting a god finally overwhelming even his enhanced regeneration. He fell from the sky, too exhausted to maintain his flame wings, plummeting toward the shattered earth below.
Mei caught him.
Her soul medicine cushioned his fall, eased his landing, and immediately began repairing the damage. Through their bond, he felt her relief, her terror, her love.
*You're alive*, she sent. *You fought a god and you're alive.*
*Barely.* Lin Feng lay on the broken ground, staring at the sky where the battle had raged moments before. *He was holding back. Testing me. When he comes back...*
*We'll figure it out.* Her hands moved over his wounds, essence flowing to accelerate healing. *We always figure it out.*
The Dragon descended, its massive form shrinking as it approached until it was merely the size of a large horse.
*That was unexpected*, it said. *You injured the Jade Emperor. I didn't think that was possible.*
"Neither did he." Lin Feng managed a weak smile. "How long do we have?"
*Before he returns? Unknown. Preparing the full celestial response will take time, even for him. Weeks, perhaps. Maybe months.*
"Then we need to move faster." Lin Feng tried to sit up, failed, tried again with Mei's help. "The Black Tortoise. The remaining divine beasts. I need to consume them all before he comes back."
*An aggressive plan.* The Dragon's eyes gleamed. *But perhaps necessary. The four great beasts together would give you enough power to truly challenge heaven.*
"Four great beasts?"
*Phoenix, Tiger, Dragon, Tortoise. The cardinal guardians of the mortal realm.* The Dragon's voice was soft. *If you could consume all four, you would be something that hasn't existed since the world's creation. A being of complete divine authority.*
Lin Feng stared at the ancient creature.
"You're offering yourself?"
*I'm considering it.* The Dragon's expression was unreadable. *Ask me again when you've proven you can control that much power without losing yourself.*
It turned and slithered toward the horizon.
*For now, focus on the Tortoise. If you can consume that ancient fool, I'll reconsider my stance.*
The Dragon vanished into the distance, leaving Lin Feng and Mei alone on the battlefield.
"Did that just..." Mei began.
"Yes." Lin Feng fell back against the ground, too exhausted to think about what it meant. "It did."
They lay together in the ruins of their battle, watching the sun set on a world that would never be the same.
Tomorrow, they would continue toward the Tortoise.
But tonight, they rested. They had earned that much.
