The silence between them went on too long for comfort.

Lin Feng stood his ground, the Cardinal Circle humming with readiness. Mei flanked him on one side, the Dragon's presence coiled around them both like a protective barrier. They were prepared for anything.

Except what the Emperor said next.

"DO YOU KNOW WHY WE LEFT?"

The question was quiet, almost conversational. A dramatic shift from the thunderous pronouncements of before.

"You were afraid," Lin Feng said. "The original Devourer proved that mortals could challenge divine power. So you ran."

"AFRAID. YES." The Emperor rose from his throne, his form shrinking to something more human-sized. "BUT NOT OF THE DEVOURER. NOT OF MORTALS. WE WERE AFRAID OF WHAT WE WERE BECOMING."

"I don't understand."

The Emperor descended the steps of his dais, approaching Lin Feng with measured steps.

"WHEN GODS RULE OVER MORTALS, THEY BECOME SOMETHING OTHER THAN GODS. THE CONSTANT ATTENTION. THE PRAYERS. THE SACRIFICES. THE WORSHIP." His voice held old pain. "IT CHANGES US, LIN FENG. WARPS US. THE LONGER WE STAYED, THE MORE WE BECAME REFLECTIONS OF MORTAL NEEDS RATHER THAN BEINGS OF INDEPENDENT WILL."

"You're saying you left to preserve yourselves?"

"I'M SAYING WE LEFT BECAUSE WE WERE BECOMING MONSTERS." The Emperor stopped an arm's length away. His perfect face showed cracks, imperfections Lin Feng hadn't noticed before. "THE JADE EMPEROR YOU HATE, THE CRUEL AND DISTANT TYRANT WHO ABANDONED HUMANITY? THAT BEING WAS CREATED BY HUMANITY. SHAPED BY THEIR PRAYERS AND EXPECTATIONS."

Lin Feng felt the Dragon's presence stir with recognition.

*He's telling the truth*, the Dragon said. *I remember the old gods, before the withdrawal. They were different. Kinder, in some ways. But also more erratic. More driven by mortal needs than divine wisdom.*

"You could have explained this," Lin Feng said. "Instead of simply vanishing."

"COULD WE? WOULD MORTALS HAVE ACCEPTED THAT THEIR GODS WERE BECOMING TOO TWISTED BY WORSHIP TO CONTINUE?" The Emperor laughed bitterly. "THE ANNOUNCEMENT WOULD HAVE CAUSED MORE WORSHIP. MORE PRAYERS. MORE WARPING OF OUR NATURES."

"So you chose silence."

"WE CHOSE SURVIVAL. FOR BOTH OF US." The Emperor's eyes met Lin Feng's. "THE DIVINE BEASTS WERE SUPPOSED TO MAINTAIN BALANCE IN OUR ABSENCE. THEY WERE DESIGNED TO PROTECT HUMANITY WITHOUT REQUIRING WORSHIP IN RETURN."

"They failed."

"YES. WITHOUT DIVINE OVERSIGHT, THEY BECAME CORRUPTED. TERRITORIAL. DANGEROUS." The Emperor's expression shifted to grief, or something near it. "WE WATCHED FROM A DISTANCE AS EVERYTHING WE BUILT COLLAPSED. BUT WE COULDN'T RETURN. RETURNING WOULD MEAN BECOMING WHAT WE'D ESCAPED AGAIN."

Lin Feng was silent, processing this. His entire quest had assumed the gods were simply cruel, simply uncaring. This was more complicated.

"You could have found another way."

"WE TRIED. FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS, WE SEARCHED FOR ALTERNATIVES." The Emperor's voice grew heavy. "NOTHING WORKED. DIVINE AND MORTAL WERE NEVER MEANT TO COEXIST LONG-TERM. THE VERY ACT OF INTERACTION CREATES DEPENDENCY THAT CORRUPTS BOTH SIDES."

"Then what's the solution?"

"THAT'S WHY YOU'RE INTERESTING." The Emperor studied Lin Feng with new intensity. "YOU'VE CONSUMED DIVINE ESSENCE WITHOUT BECOMING DIVINE. YOU'VE GAINED POWER WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MORTAL NATURE. YOU'VE DONE SOMETHING THAT SHOULDN'T BE POSSIBLE."

"The Devourer's Path."

"YES. BUT MODIFIED. EVOLVED." The Emperor gestured at the Cardinal Circle's aura. "THE ORIGINAL DEVOURER BECAME MORE BEAST THAN MAN. YOU'VE SOMEHOW MAINTAINED BALANCE. INTEGRATED RATHER THAN BEEN CONSUMED."

"Because I have anchors. People who keep me human."

"EXACTLY." The Emperor nodded slowly. "YOU'VE SOLVED A PROBLEM THAT VEXED US FOR AGES. HOW TO BRIDGE DIVINE AND MORTAL WITHOUT CORRUPTION ON EITHER SIDE."

---

The conversation shifted to something Lin Feng hadn't expected.

Negotiation.

"I WON'T RETURN TO THE MORTAL REALM," the Emperor said. "NOR WILL ANY GOD. THE RISK IS TOO GREAT, AND WE'VE WORKED TOO HARD TO FREE OURSELVES FROM MORTAL INFLUENCE."

"The mortal realm still needs protection."

"AGREED. BUT THE PROTECTION DOESN'T HAVE TO COME FROM US." The Emperor's eyes gleamed. "IT COULD COME FROM YOU."

Lin Feng felt the weight of the suggestion.

"You want me to take over your responsibilities."

"I WANT YOU TO CREATE SOMETHING NEW. A SYSTEM THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE DIVINE INTERVENTION. A WAY FOR MORTALS TO PROTECT THEMSELVES USING POWER THEY CAN CONTROL." The Emperor spread his hands. "THE DEVOURER'S PATH, REFINED AND SHARED. THE CARDINAL CIRCLE, REPLICATED AND DISTRIBUTED. A WORLD WHERE POWER DOESN'T FLOW FROM HEAVEN BUT FROM THE WORLD ITSELF."

"That would change everything."

"EVERYTHING NEEDS TO CHANGE." The Emperor sounded tired. "THE OLD SYSTEM WAS BROKEN FROM THE BEGINNING. WE JUST COULDN'T SEE IT. YOU CAN BUILD SOMETHING BETTER."

Lin Feng turned to look at Mei, at the Dragon's presence that hovered around them both. Through the Cardinal Circle, he felt the Phoenix's fierce approval, the Tiger's aggressive support, the Tortoise's patient acceptance.

"What about the remaining divine beasts?" he asked. "The ones I haven't consumed?"

"THERE ARE FIVE LESSER GUARDIANS, SCATTERED ACROSS THE MORTAL REALM. THEY'VE GROWN WILD WITHOUT OVERSIGHT, BUT THEY COULD BE RECLAIMED." The Emperor considered this. "OFFER THEM WHAT YOU OFFERED THE DRAGON. ALLIANCE RATHER THAN CONSUMPTION. A PLACE IN THE NEW ORDER YOU'RE CREATING."

"And if they refuse?"

"THEN YOU CONSUME THEM. SHOW THEM THAT THE OLD WAY IS TRULY ENDING." The Emperor paused. "I'LL PROVIDE YOU WITH THEIR LOCATIONS. THEIR WEAKNESSES. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO BRING THEM INTO LINE."

"In exchange for what?"

"FOR LEAVING HEAVEN ALONE." The Emperor met his eyes. "WE WON'T INTERFERE IN MORTAL AFFAIRS. EVER. IN RETURN, YOU WON'T TRY TO FORCE YOUR WAY INTO OUR REALM AGAIN."

Lin Feng considered this. It wasn't the total victory he'd imagined. No gods kneeling before him, no divine retribution for celestial crimes. But it was something arguably better.

Freedom.

True, permanent freedom for humanity from divine oversight.

"I'll need guarantees," he said.

"WHAT KIND?"

"The Heavenly Gate stays open. Both ways. If mortals develop the power to reach heaven on their own, they're allowed to pass." Lin Feng's voice hardened. "And if any god breaks the agreement, interferes in mortal affairs, the treaty is void."

"YOU'RE ASKING US TO ACCEPT POTENTIAL FUTURE CHALLENGES."

"I'm asking you to treat mortals as potential equals rather than eternal servants." Lin Feng smiled. "Isn't that what you wanted? Independence from mortal worship? This is the price."

The Emperor was silent for a long moment.

Then he laughed.

This wasn't the bitter laugh of before. This was genuine amusement, and maybe respect underneath it.

"YOU TRULY ARE SOMETHING NEW, LIN FENG. NOT A GOD. NOT A BEAST. NOT A MORTAL. SOMETHING THAT BRIDGES ALL THREE WITHOUT BEING LIMITED BY ANY." He extended his hand. "VERY WELL. I ACCEPT YOUR TERMS. HEAVEN WILL NOT INTERFERE IN MORTAL AFFAIRS. THE GATE WILL REMAIN OPEN. AND IF MORTALS EVER BECOME POWERFUL ENOUGH TO CHALLENGE US..."

"Then we'll meet as equals."

The Emperor's hand closed around Lin Feng's.

"THEN WE'LL MEET AS EQUALS."

---

The agreement was sealed with more than a handshake.

Divine essence flowed between them, creating bonds that couldn't be broken by anything short of mutual consent. Lin Feng felt the Emperor's power brush against his own, testing, evaluating, and ultimately accepting.

"IT'S DONE," the Emperor said when the binding completed. "THE TREATY IS SEALED. NEITHER HEAVEN NOR MORTAL REALM CAN BREAK IT UNILATERALLY."

"What happens now?"

"NOW YOU RETURN TO THE MORTAL WORLD AND BUILD WHAT YOU'VE PROMISED." The Emperor returned to his throne, his form expanding back to divine proportions. "THE LOCATIONS OF THE LESSER GUARDIANS HAVE BEEN INSCRIBED IN YOUR MEMORY. THE REST IS UP TO YOU."

Lin Feng nodded slowly. He could feel the information settling into his mind: locations, weaknesses, ancient histories of divine beasts he'd never heard of.

"One more question."

"ASK."

"Why me? Of all the mortals who've suffered under divine abandonment, why did I become this?" Lin Feng gestured at himself. "What made me different?"

The Emperor was quiet for a moment.

"THE ORIGINAL DEVOURER LEFT MORE THAN JUST TECHNIQUES BEHIND. HE LEFT A FRAGMENT OF HIS ESSENCE IN THE MORTAL REALM, WAITING FOR A SUITABLE HOST." The Emperor's eyes held ancient knowledge. "YOU WEREN'T BORN WITH SHATTERED MERIDIANS, LIN FENG. YOU WERE BORN WITH SOMETHING FAR MORE UNUSUAL: THE ORIGINAL DEVOURER'S POTENTIAL, COMPRESSED INTO A FORM THAT LOOKED LIKE DISABILITY."

The pieces clicked together in Lin Feng's mind.

"I was meant for this."

"YOU WERE PREPARED FOR THIS. WHAT YOU CHOSE TO DO WITH THAT PREPARATION WAS ENTIRELY YOUR OWN." The Emperor's voice softened slightly. "THE ORIGINAL DEVOURER'S POTENTIAL COULD HAVE BECOME SOMETHING TERRIBLE. IT DID BECOME SOMETHING TERRIBLE, THE FIRST TIME. YOU'VE MADE IT SOMETHING ELSE."

"Something better?"

"SOMETHING DIFFERENT. ONLY TIME WILL TELL IF IT'S BETTER." The Emperor raised his hand in dismissal. "GO, CARDINAL DEVOURER. BUILD YOUR NEW WORLD. PROTECT YOUR PEOPLE. BECOME WHAT NEITHER GODS NOR BEASTS NOR MORTALS HAVE EVER BEEN."

"What's that?"

"THE BRIDGE BETWEEN."

Lin Feng bowed, once, precisely. Then he turned and walked out of the throne room, Mei at his side and the Dragon's presence wrapped around them both.

The war was over.

The real work was about to begin.
