The monitoring sensor tripped at the fourth hour.
Lin Feng was on the diagnostic platform, not sleepingâthe template's integration cycle had a rhythm now, a pulse that kept him in the shallow space between rest and awareness where the formation-frequency medium did its autonomous work. Substrate conversion at seventy-six percent and climbing. The single amber pillar running its passive scan in the dark of Hub Fourteen-Northeast.
The sensor data hit his direct conduit interface like a tap on the shoulder.
Something was moving in the Barrens. Northwest of the hub, fourteen kilometers out, crossing terrain that the cascade had activated six days ago. The monitoring infrastructure in that sector was newâdormant conduit lines woken by the cascade's propagation, their sensors coming online for the first time in ten thousand years. The data was rough. Grainy. But the formation-frequency signature was unmistakable.
Not a practitioner. Not human.
A beast.
Lin Feng sat up on the platform. The hub's single pillar adjusted its scan cycle, responding to the shift in his template's output as his direct conduit interface engaged fully with the monitoring feed.
Fourteen kilometers. Moving southeast. Toward the hub.
"Gao Jun."
The analyst was asleep in the alcove off the main chamberâthe space they'd designated for rest since arriving at Hub Fourteen-Northeast four days ago. Lin Feng heard the shift in breathing that meant Gao Jun had registered the name but was still climbing out of whatever field-operative sleep cycle he maintained.
"Monitoring event," Lin Feng said. "Northwest sector."
Gao Jun was at the workbench in thirty seconds, rod already in hand. He pulled the overlay from his kitâthe portable analytical device that translated formation-frequency data into visual probability modelsâand connected it to the hub's monitoring feed.
"I see it." The rod spun twice, fast. "Formation-frequency signature consistent with a corrupted beast. Class..." He ran the overlay's comparison function. "Low-tier. Comparable to the signatures the division catalogued in their Barrens survey data from two years ago. Not a spiritual beast. Not sacred-class. A lesser corrupted animal with enough formation-frequency absorption to register on the monitoring infrastructure."
"How much absorption?"
"Enough to move through activated conduit terrain without the energy killing it." The rod stopped. "Which means it's been feeding on cascade energy. The conduit lines in the northwest sector have been active for six days. This thing has been in the activation zone for at least part of that time, absorbing ambient formation-frequency output from the infrastructure."
Lin Feng tracked the signature through the monitoring sensors. The beast was moving at a steady paceânot running, not cautious. The signature had a quality he didn't have a word for yet: directional, like a person walking toward something they could smell.
"Speed and heading?"
"Consistent southeast bearing. Current pace puts it at the hub's surface perimeter in..." Gao Jun checked. "Eleven hours. Approximately."
Eleven hours. Lin Feng released the monitoring feed and looked at the amber pillar's passive readout.
*Template efficiency: 57.8%.*
Two-tenths of a percent above where he'd been when he sat down for the night. The integration cycle continued its steady work regardless of what was walking toward them in the dark.
"Has the division's survey data documented beast behavior around activated conduit infrastructure?" he asked.
"Limited." Gao Jun was scrolling through the overlay's archive. "The division's Barrens survey tracked beast migration patterns for three years. Corrupted beasts avoided areas with active conduit infrastructureâthe energy output was hostile to their formation-frequency biology. They stayed in dead zones, inactive terrain, places where the pre-Abandonment network had gone fully dark."
"That's changed."
"The cascade changed it. The activation pattern is different from the pre-Abandonment operational state. The cascade propagates at a frequency thatâ" He stopped, pulled up a comparison model. "The pre-Abandonment conduit network ran at administrative specification. Clean, regulated, within design parameters. The cascade propagates at a different specification. It's not administrative. It's developmental. The energy signature is..." He searched for the word.
"Hungry," Lin Feng said.
Gao Jun looked at him.
"The cascade's propagation pattern reads like a growth signal. Not maintenanceâexpansion. The conduit lines aren't being restored to their old function. They're being adapted to a new one." Lin Feng was reading the substrate as he spoke, the direct conduit interface translating what he felt in the network into language. "The beasts aren't avoiding it because it doesn't feel hostile anymore. It feels like food."
The rod was stationary. Flat-palm assessment.
"That's not in the division's models," Gao Jun said.
"No."
They watched the monitoring feed for a while. The beast continued its southeast track. Steady. Unhurried.
Lin Feng reached into the substrate.
The distributed presence of Old Ghost was thin at Hub Fourteen-Northeastâalways had been. The conduit density in this sector couldn't support the kind of concentrated communication they'd had at Hub Seven-West's six-pillar station. But the presence was there, the way a deep current was there beneath shallow water.
*The beast,* Lin Feng sent through the formation-frequency data format.
The response came slowly. Old Ghost's communication propagating through thin conduit lines, assembling meaning from limited bandwidth.
*Yes. The first of many. The cascade has changed the Barrens. What was dead territory for corrupted beasts is now fertile ground.* A pause that might have been the conduit lag or might have been deliberate. *This is not incidental to your path.*
*Explain.*
*The foundation is built. Junction node. Relay node. The conduit network's infrastructure has given your template the architecture it needsâthe routing sense, the direct interface, the administrative capability. But architecture without energy is a building without occupants.* The words arrived in fragments, the substrate carrying them at the speed the thin lines allowed. *The next stage of the Devourer's Path does not come from consuming more infrastructure. It comes from consuming what lives in the spaces the infrastructure defines.*
Lin Feng was quiet for a moment. The monitoring sensor tracked the beast's progress. Thirteen point two kilometers.
*Beasts.*
*Corrupted beasts carry formation-frequency energy in their biology. Not the structured, regulated energy of the conduit networkâraw energy, absorbed from the environment over years or decades of exposure to residual pre-Abandonment radiation. Consuming that energy does not give you new architecture. It fills the architecture you already have.* Another pause. *Template efficiency measures how much of your formation-frequency architecture is operational. Substrate conversion measures how much of that architecture has adapted to conduit-class specification. Both numbers have been climbing through the integration cycle. But the integration cycle works with the energy your template already contains. To push beyond the current ceiling, you need more energy. External energy. Consumed and integrated.*
*The beasts are the source.*
*They have always been the source. The Devourer's Path was designed for this. The infrastructure consumption was the anomalyâa shortcut made possible by the cascade's activation and the availability of pre-Abandonment nodes in the Barrens. The path's original design assumed no such shortcuts. The First Operatorâ* Old Ghost paused. *The man I was consumed beasts for four hundred years before he found his first intact conduit node.*
Four hundred years.
Lin Feng had been on the path for twelve months.
*The beast approaching the hub,* he sent. *Is it viable?*
*At your current template specification, a low-tier corrupted beast is viable. The consumption process is different from infrastructure consumption. Infrastructure is static. It does not resist. It does not fight. A beast is alive. Its formation-frequency energy is bound to its biology, to its instincts, to the corrupted patterns that have shaped it since the Abandonment. Consuming that energy means overriding those patterns with your template's architecture. If the beast's formation-frequency resistance exceeds your template's integration capacityâ*
*It kills me.*
*It damages you. Potentially severely.* The substrate carried the correction with the precision of a teacher who did not allow imprecise language, even about death. *The Third Devourer lost two years of development to a beast consumption that exceeded their integration buffer. They survived. The recovery period was not productive.*
Two years. Lin Feng filed that.
*What do I need to know before I try?*
*Proximity. The direct conduit interface works at range for infrastructureâyou proved that against Wei Sen. Beast consumption requires physical contact. Your formation-frequency architecture must interface directly with the beast's biology. Touch range.* A pause. *Which means you must be close enough for the beast to reach you as well.*
Lin Feng looked at the monitoring sensor data. The formation-frequency signature of the corrupted beast, moving through the activated Barrens terrain at its steady, unhurried pace.
He thought about forty-one kilometers of safe distance through conduit lines. Administrative commands from a diagnostic platform. The projection technique that had let him dismantle Wei Sen's operation without being in the same room.
This was different.
"Gao Jun." He turned to the analyst. "The beast's heading. You said consistent southeast."
"Directly toward the hub. Yes."
"Not toward the hub." Lin Feng watched the monitoring data. "The conduit infrastructure in this sector has been active for six days. There are activated lines running in every direction. If the beast was tracking cascade energy, it would follow the densest conduit concentrationâthat's the main trunk line, which runs east-west, not southeast."
Gao Jun checked. The rod spun once. "You're right. The main trunk is east-west. The beast is ignoring it." He pulled up the heading analysis. "Its bearing is..." He stopped.
"Directly toward Hub Fourteen-Northeast," Lin Feng said. "Not toward the nearest activated conduit line. Toward this specific location."
The rod was stationary.
"Toward me," Lin Feng said.
He reached into the substrate.
*Old Ghost. The beast's heading.*
The response came without the usual pause. As if the distributed presence had been waiting for this question.
*Your template at fifty-seven percent efficiency generates a formation-frequency signature that propagates through the conduit network. You have been in this hub for four days. Your signature has been radiating through the activated infrastructure for four days. To a corrupted beast that has been absorbing cascade energyâa beast whose formation-frequency biology has become attuned to the network's developmental signalâyour template signature reads as the densest, most concentrated source of that energy in the region.*
*I'm a beacon.*
*You are a feast.* The word arrived with the weight of someone who had learned this particular lesson ten thousand years ago. *The Devourer's Path creates a symmetry. You consume beasts to fill your architecture with their energy. They are drawn to your architecture because it contains the energy they feed on. The hunter attracts the hunted. The hunted tracks the hunter.* A pause. *This is not a flaw in the design. This is the design. The path ensures that you never need to search for your next source. Your next source will find you.*
Lin Feng sat on the diagnostic platform and watched the monitoring sensor track the corrupted beast moving through the predawn Barrens toward him.
Eleven hours.
Gao Jun had his overlay running probability models on the beast's formation-frequency signature, cross-referencing with the division's survey data, building a threat assessment from information that had never been designed to assess this particular threat.
The amber pillar ran its passive scan.
*Template efficiency: 57.8%.*
The number that made him a target.
"Gao Jun," he said. "How many activated monitoring sensors do we have in the northwest sector?"
"Fourteen. The cascade activated a cluster of dormantâ"
"Widen the scan. Full three-sixty, maximum range. I want to know if that's the only one."
The analyst adjusted the monitoring parameters. The overlay processed the expanded scan for forty seconds.
Then Gao Jun set down his rod.
He never set down his rod.
"Three more," he said. "South, east-southeast, and northeast. Different distancesâthe nearest is nine kilometers, the farthest is twenty-two." He picked the rod back up. Held it without spinning. "All of them are moving toward the hub."
