Xia Yuan attacked first.
No warning. No posturing. One moment the three of them were walking toward Noah's Heart from three directions. The next, the air between Xia Yuan and Luyu split apart.
Domain: Void Severance.
The attack was invisible until it landed β a spatial cut that severed reality along a clean line, like an unseen blade slicing through paper. The grass in its path separated. The ground cracked. A perfect, molecule-thin line of destruction stretched thirty feet across the grassland.
Aimed at Luyu. Not Calder.
Luyu dove sideways. Her beast companions scattered β a scaled wolf, a feathered serpent, and something that looked like an armored boar crossed with a siege engine. The spatial cut missed her by inches, carved through the grass where she'd been standing, and kept going for another fifty feet before the energy dissipated.
"Pragmatic," Luyu said, rolling to her feet. "Take out the suppression user before engaging the damage dealer."
"You'd do the same," Xia Yuan replied from across the field.
She would have. Luyu's Domain β Infinite Silence β suppressed magic below Tier 5 within its range. Against Xia Yuan's spatial cuts, which relied on mana concentration, the suppression would weaken every attack. Smart strategy: eliminate the counter before facing the threat.
Luyu activated her Domain.
The world went quiet. Not sound-quiet β magic-quiet. A sphere of suppression expanded from Luyu's position, forty feet in radius, and within it, the ambient mana thinned to nothing. Spells below Tier 5 simply stopped working. The enchanted grass went dead. The dungeon's background hum vanished.
Xia Yuan's spatial cuts weakened visibly β the clean lines became ragged, the range shortened. She compensated by concentrating harder, pouring more mana into each strike, but the efficiency dropped. Every attack cost her twice as much inside the suppression field.
Calder stopped walking. He was outside Luyu's Domain range β barely. The suppression field's edge lapped at his boots like a tide. Inside it, his Tier 4 public spells would be useless. His Tier 5 cap would be halved in effectiveness.
His Tier 7 spells would work fine. But showing Tier 7 in front of two witnesses during a nationally monitored exam was the one thing he absolutely could not do.
He watched the fight develop.
Xia Yuan and Luyu were focused on each other. The spatial cuts kept coming β weakened by the suppression but still dangerous, forcing Luyu to dodge and redirect. Luyu's beast companions engaged as mobile interceptors, absorbing hits that would have caught their master. The scaled wolf took a spatial cut across the shoulder and lost a chunk of its side. It didn't slow down.
The feathered serpent circled Xia Yuan from above, diving in strikes that forced her to split attention between the aerial threat and Luyu's ground positioning. The armored boar charged in straight lines, tanking spatial cuts with its reinforced hide and forcing Xia Yuan to reposition.
Smart. Luyu fought through her beasts, distributing damage across multiple bodies while staying mobile herself. Xia Yuan fought alone, relying on the raw power of her Domain to overcome the numbers disadvantage.
Neither was winning. The fight was a stalemate, burning through both combatants' mana reserves at an unsustainable rate.
Calder circled the battlefield toward Noah's Heart.
The crystalline spire was five hundred feet from the center of the fight. Unguarded. Both women were too occupied with each other to notice him moving along the periphery. The bracelet's point display updated with each second β his lead was still comfortable, and reaching the core would end things permanently.
Two hundred feet to the spire. The grass was thick here, tall enough to provide visual cover. He moved quickly, staying low.
One hundred feet.
Fifty.
Xia Yuan's voice cut across the field: "He's going for the core!"
The spatial cut came from his left. Not aimed at him β aimed at the ground between him and the spire. The grass exploded upward along a line of severed earth, creating a trench five feet wide and ten feet deep. He skidded to a stop at the edge.
Xia Yuan had broken from the fight with Luyu, pivoting her Domain toward the real objective. Two more spatial cuts followed, forming a triangle of trenches around Noah's Heart. The core sat in the center, now surrounded by impassable terrain.
"Nobody gets the core unless I allow it," Xia Yuan said. Her hands were raised, spatial energy warping the air around her. "We settle this between us first."
Luyu appeared at the battlefield's eastern edge, Domain still active. Her beasts regrouped around her. "Agreed. The farm boy doesn't get to win by sneaking."
Two against one. Both focused on him.
Calder stood at the trench's edge, wind pushing his hair back, and calculated.
Option one: retreat. Maintain his point lead, let the clock run out. He'd win by margin. Safe. Boring.
Option two: fight. Use Tier 5 spells against two Domain users who outclassed that tier. Hard. Risky. The kind of fight that might force him to show more than he should.
Option threeβ
"I don't need to sneak," Calder said.
He jumped the trench.
Gale Step carried him across the five-foot gap. He landed on the other side, inside the trenched perimeter, ten feet from Noah's Heart. Both women reacted instantly.
Xia Yuan launched three spatial cuts. Calder read them through Void Resonance β the mana disturbance preceding each cut was visible to his senses, a ripple in reality's fabric. He dodged the first, deflected the second with Wind Barrier, and dove under the third.
Luyu's Domain expanded, sweeping over his position. The suppression hit him like a cold bath β his Tier 5 spells weakened, output dropping to Tier 3 effectiveness. Not enough to fight with. Not enough to win.
Not at Tier 5.
Calder made a decision.
He cast Soul Freeze.
The Tier 7 ice spell punched through Luyu's Domain like a bullet through paper. The suppression field was designed to dampen magic below Tier 5. Soul Freeze was Tier 7. It was immune.
The spell hit Luyu. Her body crystallized mid-stride. Her Domain flickered β the suppression wavered as her core locked.
Three seconds of immobility. Three seconds of silence.
Calder turned to Xia Yuan. She was already attacking β spatial cuts from three angles, converging on his position. He used Gale Step to dodge two and caught the third on Wind Barrier at full Tier 5 β the suppression field had collapsed with Luyu frozen, returning his output to normal.
Xia Yuan's eyes widened. "You have Tier 7 ice."
"I have a lot of things."
He closed the distance. She cut the air between them β a defensive severance, a wall of spatial distortion. He hit it with Storm Cyclone. The physical force of concentrated wind punched through the spatial wall. Not because wind was stronger than space β because his casting speed layered three cyclones on top of each other in one second, and the aggregate force exceeded the wall's tolerance.
Xia Yuan staggered. Her Domain was offline β she'd been pouring energy into offensive cuts, not defensive layering. Calder hit her with Blizzard at Tier 5. The ice slowed her movements. Another Storm Cyclone knocked her backward.
She hit the ground, rolled, came up with spatial energy crackling around both hands. "Who ARE you?"
Behind them, Luyu's freeze wore off. She gasped, stumbled, her Domain reactivating. The suppression field swept over the battlefield again.
Two against one. Both angry. Both competent.
Calder was having fun.
He Gale-Stepped to Noah's Heart. The crystalline spire was right there β five feet tall, pulsing with dungeon energy. One touch and it would be over.
Xia Yuan cut the air. A severance aimed at his hand.
Luyu's Domain pulsed, suppressing his movement skills.
Calder cast Flame Blast at Tier 5 β the highest the suppression would allow β directly into the ground at his feet. The explosion of dirt and heat created a smokescreen. In the half-second of visual obstruction, he drove his palm into Noah's Heart.
The crystal shattered.
Energy exploded outward. The dungeon's sky cracked. The ground shook. The grasslands began dissolving at the edges, the pocket dimension's structure collapsing from the core outward.
*Noah's Heart destroyed. 5,000 bonus points.*
*Voss, Calder: 14,200 points. Final rank: 1.*
*Dungeon collapsing. All candidates evacuating.*
The world dissolved around them in sheets of light and noise.
---
Calder materialized on the staging platform in the Capital Academy's arena. Two hundred candidates appeared around him in waves β some standing, some sitting, some lying down with injuries the dungeon's safety protocols hadn't fully healed.
Xia Yuan appeared three feet to his left. She looked at him with an expression that mixed frustration and respect. "That ice spell was Tier 7."
"It was."
"Your file says Tier 5 maximum."
"Files are updated periodically."
She stared at him for five seconds. Then she turned and walked away without another word.
Luyu appeared on his right. Her beasts materialized around her, the scaled wolf limping, the feathered serpent coiled protectively. She looked at Calder with the flat assessment of someone revising a threat model.
"You broke through my Domain."
"Your Domain suppresses below Tier 5."
"Below Tier 5. Yes." Her eyes narrowed. "Your ice spell shouldn't have existed."
"Surprises keep life interesting."
Luyu didn't smile. She didn't walk away either. She stood there, calculating, and Calder could almost see the equations running behind her eyes.
"You showed Tier 7 in front of witnesses," she said quietly. "In a nationally monitored exam. On camera."
Calder's stomach tightened. She was right. The Soul Freeze β the Tier 7 cast β had been visible to every observation system tracking the fight. The examiners, the Association monitors, the bracelet's data logs, the Arena's recording crystals.
He'd shown Tier 7.
The ceiling he'd set was Tier 5. He'd punched through it in the heat of a fight he didn't need to win.
"Shit," Calder said quietly.
Luyu heard it. Her expression shifted β a fraction of a degree, from suspicion to something else. "Whatever you're hiding, Voss, that was a mistake."
She walked away, beasts in tow.
Calder stood on the staging platform, surrounded by two hundred exhausted candidates, first place in the Grand Reaping, and felt what he'd done settle on his shoulders like a yoke.
Tier 7. On camera. In front of the nation.
Fen was going to kill him.
